There have been a number of theories about why flight J2-8243 from Baku to Grozny crashed far from its intended destination. But the evidence points in one direction. The flight was heading towards the Chechen capital when it seems to have diverted before attempting to land several times. Then it headed away, crashing over the Caspian sea in Kazakhstan.

00:00Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 was scheduled to fly to Grozny in Chechnya
00:05from Baku. It diverted to Aktau in Kazakhstan where it crash-landed. Russia's
00:11President Vladimir Putin has apologized over the incident, but it's still not
00:15clear exactly what happened. We know the plane made repeated attempts to land at
00:19Grozny and that Russian air defenses in the area were repelling a Ukrainian
00:23drone attack. It is likely that GPS signals were being blocked to foil the
00:28drone's navigation. This could have affected the passenger plane too.
00:31Survivors of the crash reported an explosion, which Russia initially
00:36attributed to crashing into a flock of birds. But Azeri President Ilham Aliyev
00:41said it had been hit by fire from the ground. 38 people died as the plane came
00:46down short of the runway. There were 29 survivors.
