00:00Let's find out the goal of Perlas ng Silangan Basketball League with Christian Enzomo and Nato Agbayani in Sports Banter.
00:15Let's talk about your league. Sir Christian, what is the concept behind Perlas ng Silangan?
00:32The concept of Perlas ng Silangan Basketball League is to create this platform to connect the youth or the kids and to prepare them going up.
00:42If they really want to develop their passion into a career, then this is the platform that they need to go to.
00:50That was the whole concept of Perlas ng Silangan Basketball League.
00:53Did you play basketball?
00:55I used to play, it's just that during my time, not so long ago, we didn't have current leagues yet.
01:08From us, it was only up to the barangay level. After that, it was only the schools.
01:14So, Perlas ng Silangan wants to bridge that platform.
01:17The kids from the ages of 8 to 15 years old will have the platform to showcase their skills and talents.
01:26How did you come up with the idea? It's very challenging to tap the LGUs, right?
01:33What was the drive? Who helped you to reach these teams?
01:40A lot of people really helped. This is not a one-man show, a two-man show, but it's a group of people who share the same vision and the same passion.
01:50I think logistically, it's a nightmare to set up this kind of event.
01:55But with the help of people who share the vision, we are currently on 12 regions right now, this season 1.
02:04Hopefully, by next season, we will cover the whole of the regions.
02:08You mentioned the vision. What is your vision for this tournament?
02:12Our vision for Perlas ng Silangan Basketball League is to really be on all the regions.
02:19So, what will happen come season 2 is we will have each of the province having a qualifiers,
02:25and then each of the champions from the province will go to a regional championship,
02:29and then regional championship will go to the nationals,
02:31and then we will have an international tournament at the end of each of the season.
02:37You mentioned that you have a lot of teams in this league. What is the tournament format?
02:43So, our tournament format is a single round, and we have a total of 7 age categories,
02:50as young as 8 years old to 11, so that's the youngest, up to 21 years old.
02:55So, our tournament format is a single round, and then the top teams will go to the semis, and then to the national level.
03:04You mentioned the logistics. Where are the venues of your games?
03:09Our venues, so we started in Araneta Coliseum when we were starting, and another thing that we help here is the LGUs.
03:18So, most of the regions, they partner with an LGU, and the LGU really help in setting up the venues and giving us the venues,
03:26so that it's really accessible for our players and also for the viewers.
03:31Thank you, sir. I'll go to sir Nato.
03:34Sir Nato, how do you join here? Is it a selection process? Is it a registration process?
03:41So, what happens is we have regional partners, and then they get the teams from the local regions.
03:48They cooperate with the LGUs. It can be teams, it can be basketball clubs, it can be school-based.
03:56So, they join, and the regional partners, there are play-offs, like what's happening now, that's happening everywhere.
04:03So, we have in practically 12 regions, playing all at the same time, so simultaneously, there are games.
04:11So, once they qualify, the teams are already formed, like what you're showing now, I think this is Northern Mindanao.
04:19So, we have everywhere, everywhere, and then once they qualify, they do their own tryouts, then they have their own teams.
04:29Okay, so there's a qualifying. Sir Christian mentioned that there are from 8 years old to 11. So, how do you categorize?
04:37So, there are age groups, under 11, 13, under 15, under 17, 19, and then under 21. Then we have 22 and up, that's the professional.
04:49So, if you notice, it's really a development league. So, it's really for kids. We want to really develop the talents of the young people.
04:58Well, primarily because 20% of the young kids want to play basketball.
05:03Yes.
05:05But then again, 20% of our youth have mental health issues. That's why we're trying to do this intervention, our advocacy, not just for sports, but for total.
05:18Our tagline is building champions for life.
05:21Right, wow.
05:23So, it's not just the sport, it's also the mental toughness and everything else that comes with it.
05:27There are a lot of different basketball leagues that are emerging now with the same concept, under 17, under 15, under 13.
05:37So, what makes Perlas ng Silangan different from these?
05:40Yeah, because in Perlas ng Silangan, we have five pillars. So, physical, mental, even spiritual health, and personal advancement.
05:51So, we also connect the players, eventually, if they want to become sports athletes, so they can finish school and they can become very successful in life.
06:01So, that's what building or nurturing champions for life, which is, I think, the most important part of it.
06:08It's not just winning the game. It's easy. You can win the game, you can be competitive physically.
06:14But at the end of the day, we really want total development for the kids.
06:20And Perlas ng Silangan Sports Ventures Inc. is a multi-sport platform.
06:25ESBL or Perlas ng Silangan Basketball is just our first project.
06:30We're coming up with three-on-three with very professional and veteran coaches.
06:38We're coming up with, hopefully, by next year, volleyball.
06:42We have our national championships in January.
06:46So, we'll be holding it in three cities.
06:50So, it's going to be in Iloilo and Bacolod. Also, in Dipolog.
06:55Okay. So, you mentioned earlier that you're trying to develop the skills and talents of these kids.
07:01But we can't avoid, one thing is, these kids are still students.
07:05Under 17, 15, 13. How do you manage?
07:07Isa ba yung liga tapos papasok sila sa skwalahan?
07:11Yeah. So, mostly our games are done on weekends.
07:15Sa Filipino basketball, kasi there's also what you call coach culture.
07:19So, yun. Medyo, yun. Yung coach culture natin kailangan nating i-develop.
07:25They follow their coaches. So, based on that, nakakapagtulungan tayo.
07:30So, both studies and...
07:32Nabanggit nyo din po na you're trying to develop yung kanilang mental health.
07:35Yes. That's correct.
07:37How do you do that?
07:39So, we have partnered with certain organizations to really address mental health issues.
07:43So, we have coaches. We have life coaches joining.
07:47We have other organizations on mental health na nakakatulong during the overall conduct of the games.
07:57And then, there's values formation also that's included.
08:00The commissioner sa inyo pong tournament ay si Coach Rodney Santos.
08:05Okay. Well, alam naman natin na isa siya sa mga legends.
08:08But, what does he have for you na parang siya ang ginawang yung commissioner para sa league na to?
08:14Well, he's the only option that we can think of prior.
08:18Because, alam naman natin si Rodney is one of the top players sa PBA during his heyday.
08:24And also, I think, siya rin yung pinakam...
08:27Well, not all, but isa siya sa talagang na-kep yung integrity niya all throughout his career.
08:33And now, as a commissioner of not just Perlas, but also other leagues.
08:38So, plus the values that he's shown us, yun kasi yung gusto namin i-share din sa mga bata.
08:44So, they look up to Rodney and see that this is how a player should be.
08:49So, yun din yung nakita namin sa kanya, hence why he's the commissioner right now.
08:53Well, personally, I'm very happy to know yung vision and mission and what your advocacy is,
08:59lalo na para sa mga batang atleta natin.
09:03Now, this is your chance po, if you have any message,
09:06you can also invite people where they can watch your games or follow you in the social media.
09:12You can do it po, go ahead.
09:14Alright, so, everyone.
09:16Una-una, maraming salamat.
09:18And for the people, maraming salamat sa supporta sa Season 1 ng Perlas Ang Silangan Basketball League.
09:24And we would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone.
09:28By January 2025 is our National Championship.
09:32It will be a Tri-City event.
09:35And we hope to see you there.
09:37So, it will be in Iloilo, Bacolod, and Dipolog City po.
09:41So, kita-kita po tayo January 2025.
09:46Thank you, PTV Sports.
09:48Just like what Christian said, magkita-kita po tayo.
