Forecasts of thunderstorms and wild winds have Sydney to Hobart captains on high alert two days out from the race. The conditions might also put at risk the race record set by LDV Comanche in 2017. The 2024 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race gets underway on Thursday.

00:00It's set to be a fast start to this year's race, with picture-perfect skies, much like
00:07what you can see behind me for Boxing Day.
00:09Line honours contenders Master Lock Comanche and Law Connect are both amongst the favourites
00:15to win, with a friendly rivalry between them.
00:18I know a lot of those guys on those boats, on Law Connect, and they're world-class sailors,
00:23and it's going to be a real dogfight.
00:27There is a huge amount of respect amongst both teams, we're all good friends, but the
00:34gloves are off once we get across that start line.
00:36They're likely to experience some tough seas as they approach Bass Strait, with winds shifting,
00:41causing possible boat-breaking conditions that might see some yachts retire early from
00:46the race.
00:47Wind changes are always a problematic period because you're suddenly shifting that wind
00:51from north to west or west-southwest, and along with that we do see strong winds and
00:56potentially even gale winds with this change.
00:58With those favourable conditions at the start, it's looking like the first contenders will
01:03cross the line either late Friday night or into the early hours of Saturday morning.
