00:00We will get to know an individual who finished his studies and became famous in the field of sports.
00:07Despite his challenges in life, it is proven that nothing is impossible for a person who has determination and self-belief.
00:19This is the story of Darren Cervantes.
00:30His story begins in the field of football.
00:40When I was a kid, I had no interest in sports.
00:44Up until my 4th grade, my classmates were asking me to join their club.
00:50A football club started in our school the year before and they were trying to convince me for a year.
00:58Since, like what I've told you, I have asthma, my mom didn't want me to join.
01:04It took me a year before my dad allowed me to join.
01:09But that's how it started.
01:12We were just friends within classmates, schoolmates.
01:17It was unexpected that we were successful in football.
01:24There were a lot of people who didn't believe him, but it wasn't a hindrance for him to continue.
01:29The moment that made me realize that I can do it was when I doubted myself.
01:37Because back in elementary, I started as a goalkeeper.
01:40And as you can see there, the goal is very high.
01:44I was only like 5'2 during my elementary days and I can't even reach the crossbar.
01:51So, every time I play, I hear people say,
01:56their goalkeeper is too small, you can reach the crossbar.
01:59You just have to aim for the high crossbar and you can reach it.
02:01But that's when I told myself, okay, challenge accepted.
02:07Thankfully, I was able to save and I was able to kick the ball even if it was high.
02:16And multiple times, I was able to prove to those people, to that tournament,
02:21that I'm the best goalkeeper in this age group.
02:24You can't tell me that I'm small, that I'm just like this, that I can't reach the goal.
02:29I can do it.
02:31It even reached the point, ma'am, that I could remember when I was in grade 6,
02:37it was that spot right there.
02:40We won the championship.
02:42Then, the tournament manager was meddling with the team.
03:12So, I told myself, I'm the tournament manager.
03:17If Darren wasn't there, we wouldn't be together.
03:20And that was the first time that I said,
03:24I'm not alone in this world.
03:27I can do it.
03:29Someone will always help me.
03:35And then, when I was in high school,
03:38I heard my own coach,
03:41that's what he told me.
03:43And he always said,
03:46why is it that when you play here in school,
03:49you play poorly?
03:51But when you play outside,
03:54you're like a different person.
03:57I can't tell him the truth,
03:59even if I know the reason.
04:01Girl, of course, respect,
04:04and of course, they're old.
04:07You shouldn't say that.
04:10So, I just kept my head down,
04:12did what I could.
04:14And I would admit,
04:15I was not the best student,
04:16I was not the best athlete,
04:18I was not the best son,
04:20the best brother.
04:22But I pushed through.
04:24I gave it my all.
04:26So, with that being said,
04:28those moments really showed me
04:32that I'm not alone.
04:36I could change my direction.
04:37I'm in charge of my own future.
04:46Since birth, I do have asthma.
04:49That's what really hinders me
04:51when it comes to being an active kid like me.
04:54Because, like what I've said,
04:56I'm a naughty kid,
04:57I love to run and play.
04:59And since I have asthma,
05:01it suddenly stopped,
05:03and I need to rest.
05:05That's also the reason
05:06why my mom and dad didn't let me play.
05:09Because they're afraid that
05:11once I run in the field,
05:14I'll suddenly collapse,
05:16or I'll lose my breath.
05:18And it did happen a couple of times
05:21ever since I started.
05:23Because the first time I trained,
05:26what happened was,
05:27we had jogging and a bit of sprinting
05:29for warm-up.
05:31And then, when we came back to the shade
05:34for some water,
05:35my mom told me that
05:37my face turned blue.
05:39And I said,
05:41I really don't feel anything.
05:43And now that I realize,
05:45that's when I really fell in love with the sport.
05:48Because even though I'm already struggling,
05:51and I might end up putting myself in harm,
05:55I still push through.
05:57When I was in my 6th grade,
06:01after the graduation,
06:03I was heading to a game in Alabang.
06:06I saw my reflection in the mirror,
06:08and then I noticed that
06:10there was something wrong with my skin
06:13underneath my left eye.
06:14I just let it be at first,
06:16but when I noticed that
06:18it was discoloring and all,
06:20I started to worry.
06:22So I told my mom,
06:23there's something wrong with my skin here.
06:26And then we went from doctor to doctor
06:29here in Cavite,
06:31and they didn't know what it was.
06:33At first, they thought it was just an aneurysm.
06:36But we went to a lot of places
06:39and tried all the medicines for that certain disease,
06:42but none of them worked.
06:45So one of the specialists told us
06:47to go to Makati Med.
06:49So they recommended us to a specialist there,
06:53and then that's where I found out that
06:55I have vitiligo,
06:57which is the loss of pigment in the skin.
07:08When we went to a specialist in Makati Med,
07:11they told me that I have vitiligo
07:13and I should avoid playing under the sun.
07:16So the doctor indirectly told me
07:20that I should stop playing football.
07:23And that broke my heart,
07:25because I really have a passion for football.
07:28And when I play inside the field,
07:31all my problems are gone when I'm outside.
07:34So I was really sad about that.
07:37And I also processed it for a few weeks.
07:41And that also goes for my parents,
07:44especially my mom,
07:45because she worries that I might get bullied
07:49because I'm different.
07:51But thankfully,
07:53none of that happened.
07:55And to be perfectly honest,
07:57some of the people who noticed it
08:00said that it was cool,
08:03because it looked like I was arrogant.
08:06But I still played football,
08:08because I was already tired.
08:11I still pushed through,
08:13because the impact of football is no longer a joke to me.
08:19Because of football,
08:20he became a scholar and graduated.
08:24Football helped me,
08:25because it gave me the opportunity to study for free.
08:28When I was in high school,
08:29I studied in St. Francis,
08:31where I studied elementary.
08:32And then when I got to the 8th grade,
08:35I got a Lyceum of the Philippines here in Cavite
08:39to play for their varsity team.
08:41And it was a huge help to me,
08:44because I got a better education.
08:46And of course, more than anything,
08:48I was able to help my parents
08:50to get free tuition.
08:52They were worried that I might get bullied.
08:55And I saw that it was a big help to them.
08:58Then I was in LPU for five years,
09:02from grade 8 to grade 12.
09:05And we've participated in different tournaments,
09:09and we were in the top four in the NCAA multiple times.
09:14So one of my coaches here in Cavite,
09:18Coach Guni from PCU,
09:20he has a brother that knows me from Arellano.
09:23And despite the pandemic,
09:25he offered me a scholarship.
09:27And I was able to get free tuition again
09:31until I graduated.
09:33It was a huge help to me,
09:34because the only problem my mom had with me in college
09:38was my miscellaneous school,
09:40Baon, and the dorm.
09:41To be perfectly honest, ma'am,
09:43I didn't really expect to graduate cum laude.
09:45Because my mom always tells me that
09:48if you graduate on time,
09:50it's okay for us.
09:52And then when I told my mom,
09:55Mom, I'm a cum laude.
09:58My mom was so happy,
10:00and she even cried.
10:02Because she said,
10:04you already gave us what we asked for.
10:08And you even gave us a bonus.
10:12And with that,
10:13I was so happy because
10:16I was able to give my mom happiness.
10:22And even my dad was happy.
10:25My grandfather,
10:26my grandmother,
10:27the whole family was happy.
10:29And I really didn't expect that
10:32because what I'm really doing is
10:36I'm doing my best to graduate.
10:40In his colorful experience,
10:42what lessons did he learn in life?
10:46I had a lot of opportunities that I let go.
10:49I had a lot of opportunities that I let go.
10:54So before I finished my senior high,
10:58I told myself,
10:59Ma'am, I'd rather live with a missed shot,
11:04but not taking the shot at all would kill me.
11:07Because I told myself,
11:10I won't be able to live in the what if,
11:12I won't be able to live in the past.
11:14I want to show myself that I did my best.
11:18Because with that,
11:19I won't be able to think about how to do this,
11:22how to do that,
11:23what if this,
11:24what if that.
11:25And I won't be able to live without doubting
11:30if I was wrong or right.
11:33Really trust yourself.
11:35Because at the end of the day,
11:38it's just a matter of how much you want it,
11:41how hungry you are.
11:43Darren Cervantes is a true symbol of inspiration
11:47for all those who strive to overcome the trials in their lives.
11:52In his story,
11:53we can see that hope and courage
11:57are key to achieving our dreams.
12:00Despite the challenges he faces,
12:02as well as the health conditions and doubts from others,
12:07he was able to achieve success in school
12:09and in sports.
12:12His story proves that through perseverance,
12:15dedication,
12:16and unwavering self-belief,
12:19any dream can become a reality.
