00:00Well, the truth is that I didn't know a lot about this story,
00:06so the first time I read it, it really struck me.
00:10And I had a lot of questions, and I started researching a lot,
00:15and then when I talked to Tyler and Michael,
00:17when they showed me the vision of the film they wanted to create,
00:21that they wanted Cuban talent, that they wanted to film in Santo Domingo,
00:26that they wanted to create the sanatorium for real,
00:31it was something I couldn't say no to.
00:35When the character María came in, it was quite complicated,
00:39because I didn't know how, and what I told Tyler and Michael
00:44was that I had to get to Santo Domingo a little earlier
00:47to be able to feel or be part of the sanatorium a little more.
00:52And I remember that on the first day, I took off my shoes
00:55and walked around the sanatorium, and after that,
00:58I think I put on shoes once or twice more throughout the film
01:02to be able to discover María.
01:07But I think that when I met the Cuban actors,
01:11I think that María was born the second I met them.
01:18As I was saying, to protect their experience
01:22in their first Hollywood film,
01:25and also to protect their experience in a new country,
01:29in a free country,
01:32it was very María.
01:34And I started to become María outside the set.
01:38I was the assistant of all the Cuban actors for a month and a half.
01:43And I took care of them a lot, and I protected them a lot.
01:47So, I think that through them and the friendship we were creating,
01:52María was born.
01:54There are many decisions that make up a film,
01:58but at the same time, I can't have credit for decisions.
02:04Because at the end of the day, Tyler and Michael had a vision,
02:08and each actor was the owner of their character.
02:12So, there were many decisions that even the actors made,
02:18that are not producers, that changed the film.
