00:00Welcome to our Together at Christmas carol service here at Westminster Abbey.

00:07Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year.

00:11It is a time for presents, tinsel and mince pies,

00:14but it's also a time to slow down and reflect on the deeper things that connect us all.

00:20It is when we stop and take ourselves away from the pressures of daily life

00:25that we find the space to live our lives with an open heart,

00:29with love, kindness and forgiveness,

00:33so much of what the Christmas spirit is all about.

00:38The Christmas story encourages us to consider the experiences and feelings of others.

00:44It also reflects our own vulnerabilities

00:47and reminds us of the importance of giving and receiving empathy,

00:51as well as just how much we need each other in spite of our differences.

00:57Above all else, it encourages us to turn to love not fear,

01:03the love that we show ourselves and the love that we show others,

01:07love that listens with empathy,

01:10love that is kind and understanding,

01:13love that is forgiving,

01:15and love that brings joy and hope.

01:19It is love which is the greatest gift we can receive,

01:24not just at Christmas,

01:26but every day of our lives.
