The Princess of Wales Puts Her Family First

00:00The Prince and Princess of Wales have a great deal on their plates these days,

00:03but putting their family first is a mandate William and Kate live by.

00:07And according to the new book, Catherine, the Princess of Wales,

00:10by royal expert Robert Jobson, it's a directive Kate boldly laid out

00:14for the late Queen Elizabeth back in 2015, when she was pregnant with Charlotte.

00:19In an exclusive look in this week's cover story, Jobson writes,

00:22Kate established some fundamental life rules that she would stick to when she joined the firm.

00:27Her terms were, in fact, presented to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles.

00:31She was clear from the outset that she would not be pigeonholed

00:34into carrying out particular duties. Her priority, she emphasized,

00:38would always be her family. Since then, Kate and William have paved new ground,

00:42managing to honor their royal responsibilities while prioritizing their 13-year marriage

00:48and their children, their hands-on parents who drive the kids to school

00:52and attend extracurricular activities. He writes,

00:55Wherever possible, Kate will do the school run and drop.

00:58She makes a point of being there for the school plays and sports days, too.

01:02The princess believes it's so important to do the little things and do them consistently.

01:07With William, she's ushering in a new era for the royal family,

01:11one that incorporates regular family life into their story.

01:15Jobson writes, Kate will be very important in shaping the monarchy

01:18into an institution that's relevant to modern people

01:21and not just looking over its shoulder at past traditions.

01:25And her husband relies on her tremendously. He writes,

01:28They are a team, valuing each other's opinion above all,

01:32no decision made without consulting the other.

01:35Since before their marriage, the prince knows that Catherine has practical solutions

01:40even to complex problems.

01:42And the support goes both ways, with William stepping up to the plate

01:45in the midst of Kate's diagnosis. He writes,

01:47They are very much close friends and partners, as well as husband and wife.
