The U.S. House of Representatives has rejected a Trump-backed spending bill, triggering a looming government shutdown. This comes after the president-elect and Elon Musk rejected an earlier bipartisan deal. Government spending expires on December 20th, which would trigger a partial shutdown, stopping funding for operations and pausing paychecks for over 2 million federal workers.

00:00U.S. lawmakers in the House of Representatives have rejected a Trump-backed spending bill
00:06as a government shutdown looms.
00:10Very disappointing to us that all but two Democrats voted against aid to farmers and
00:15ranchers, against disaster relief, against all these bipartisan measures that had already
00:20been negotiated and decided upon.
00:22Again, the only difference on this legislation was that we would push the debt ceiling to
00:28January of 2027.
00:31The Republican-led bill was proposed after President-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk
00:36rejected an earlier bipartisan deal but failed to get a passing vote.
00:42The bill, backed by Trump, would have suspended national debt limits for two years, opening
00:47a path for the President-elect to deliver on the sweeping tax cuts he promised.
00:52If a new bill is not passed, government funding will expire on December 20th and trigger a
00:58partial government shutdown.
01:01Republicans and Democrats have both pinned the potential shutdown on the other side.
01:06We are going to continue to fight for everyday Americans.
01:11That is why we are voting no on this bill and to stop this reckless, regressive and
01:18reactionary Republican shutdown, vote no.
01:25A partial government shutdown would interrupt funding for operations such as border enforcement
01:31and stop paychecks for over two million federal workers.
