A drier afternoon is expected for most. There will be showers feeding into the north of Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland and Wales. Indeed, these showers will fall as snow over higher ground in the north of Scotland. Whilst there will be sunny spells, it will be feeling cold today throughout the UK with cold northerly winds. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 19/12/2024. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Honor Criswick.

00:00Hello, good afternoon. A chilly day ahead, but there should be plenty of sunshine around
00:05ahead of a fairly unsettled weekend. So as we head into this afternoon, as I say, it's
00:10going to be feeling fairly cold. Lots of dry weather around, although we can't rule out
00:13a few showers. At times across Wales, parts of the south and plenty of showers feeding
00:18into the north-west of Scotland, north-western parts of Northern Ireland too. But generally
00:22across inland areas, plenty of dry weather and plenty of sunshine too. Those showers
00:27across the north-west, though, they could be heavy at times. You may even hear the
00:30odd rumble of thunder and likely falling as snow across high ground too. But it is going
00:35to be a chilly feeling day, temperatures more towards average for the time of year.
00:39But in those brisk northerly winds, that's really going to add on to the wind chill.
00:43So these are the kind of temperatures that it's more likely going to be feeling like.
00:46So yes, there will be some sunshine, but you may just have to wrap up warm to enjoy it.
00:51Now as we head into the evening, many showers generally dying away, leaving plenty of clear
00:56skies overnight, but quite breezy, which is going to stop any sort of widespread frost,
01:01though we may see a few pockets around sheltered rural spots. And then a change on its way
01:06from the north-west starting to turn quite windy here with some longer outbreaks of rain
01:10just starting to clip the far north-west of Scotland, perhaps at times western parts of
01:14Northern Ireland. And you can see from those brighter colours too, it could be rather heavy
01:18at times. But across most of central and southern areas, plenty of dry weather and plenty of
01:24clear skies. But once again, it is going to be a fairly chilly night on offer.
01:29Then through into Friday, still plenty of dry weather, particularly across central and
01:33south-eastern areas. But these outbreaks of rain slowly, steadily moving their way towards
01:38the south-east. Once again, this could be quite heavy and persistent at times, though
01:42it generally fizzles away as it moves closer towards the south-east. Brighter behind, but
01:47still once again plenty of those blustery showers. Still could be heavy at times of
01:51falling snow across higher ground too. But generally clearer skies away from those showers,
01:57but just starting to turn a bit cloudier across the far south-east before that rain eventually
02:03clips these areas. And temperatures are perhaps a degree or two higher, but still plenty of
02:08those brisk north-westerly winds just adding onto the wind chill once again. Then through
02:13into the evening, we will eventually say goodbye to this cloud and rain once again slowly edging
02:17its way towards the south-east. Clearer skies to the north of this, still plenty of those
02:22blustery showers though. And you'll notice behind me some longer spells of rain just
02:27starting to move their way in from the Atlantic as we head into Friday evening. And that's
02:31all because of this area of low pressure just crossing the far north of the country, bringing
02:35in some frontal systems, but also some very strong winds at times. So as we head into
02:40Saturday and Sunday, we do have some yellow Met Office warnings in force for strong winds,
02:46particularly across the far north-west where there is a chance we could see gales between
02:5070 and 80 miles per hour. So a very blustery weekend ahead. Do keep an eye on our website
02:55for any warning updates and do take care as I'm sure many of you will be travelling around
02:59for the Christmas period. Otherwise, that is it from me. Bye bye.
