00:00The Celtics are averaging 51.1 attempted threes per game, which would easily shatter the record for threes attempted in a season.
00:06Teams across the league are shooting more than ever due to the math of shooting more threes, as opposed to mid-range two-point jumpers bending the sport in that direction.
00:13But Silver made it clear, any attempt to change things on the fly, such as moving the three-point line, not likely to happen anytime soon,
00:19and went through some of the complications with making that kind of decision, as well as some of the things the league has done to try to address the notion of too many teams playing the same way.
00:28Historically, at times, we've moved the three-point line, Silver said. I don't think that's the solution here, because then, I think when we look at both the game and the data,
00:36I think that may not necessarily do more mid-range jumpers if that's what people want, but instead it will clog under the basket.
00:43I think this is a phase in the NBA. I think that, yeah, you may be right, there's something to be said about it not being as aesthetically pleasing,
00:51watching people go down to the court and chuck threes all day, although people didn't really seem to have a big problem when Golden State was doing it.
00:57But either way, I think eventually teams are going to start defending differently.
01:01I think that teams that don't have enough good shooters are going to start diversifying their offense and trying to score other ways,
01:06because if you don't have a good three-point shooting team, you're not going to be chucking up threes forever and winning.
01:10And I think that this ratings drop is on everyone's mind. Adam Silver's talking about it, he knows.
01:15I did read somewhere that last year was the most attended NBA season in person there's ever been,
01:22and that they set in-person attendance records last year, sellout records, all that stuff.
01:28So I wonder what the disconnect is, because people are still enjoying the NBA, people are still consuming the product,
01:33TV ratings are down, and I do wonder what that's sort of about.
01:37Like, watching the game on TV as opposed to being there, obviously it's two very different experiences,
01:42and people want to go and watch, even if they are shooting a bunch of threes, you're at the game and that's fun and whatever,
01:47as opposed to watching it on TV, it may be part of that.
01:49It may also be the accessibility of these games, because there's a lot of blackouts this year,
01:54there's a lot more streaming going on, things of that nature, and I wonder how much that's playing into it too.
01:59It may be a bigger factor than we were thinking, that and the three-point shooting,
02:03listen, I sort of poo-pooed that the other day, it seems like that's on Adam Silver's mind,
02:07I still think it's a phase that eventually is going to get phased out.
02:10The NBA goes through all sorts of phases all the time, I mean, this isn't something new.
02:14And by the way, the three-point line has been there for 45 years, like eventually people are going to start abusing it.
