00:00Would you buy a life-size doll designed to look exactly like your ex?
00:03You might think purchasing a lifelike doll is only for weirdos and
00:07lonely people who are starved for physical touch.
00:10But even celebrities are purchasing human-like,
00:12man-made creations to keep them private company.
00:16Former basketball player Lamar Odom made a shocking confession that he spent around
00:20$8,000 on a realistic love doll that he customized to resemble his ex-wife,
00:25reality star Khloe Kardashian.
00:28But despite the doll's, uh, intended purpose,
00:33Odom claims his reason for getting the doll was as a mental wellness tool.
00:43Odom faced immediate backlash for his statement, with many calling the former
00:47basketball star's desire for a life-size doll that resembles his ex-wife creepy
00:52and even downright disturbing.
00:53But don't blame Lamar for this eerie idea.
00:55There is in fact a market for realistic human dolls and people who use them as
01:00therapeutic or mental health tools.
01:02Hyper-realistic baby dolls or reborn dolls are a booming business for folks
01:07who crave the touch of a newborn and enjoy caring for a baby,
01:11minus the legitimate responsibilities required to raise a real infant.
01:21While many hobbyists create and collect reborn dolls for fun,
01:25others use them to cope with the loss of a child.
01:27Some other reborn doll lovers treat their dolls like real-deal human children,
01:32pretending the purchase of dolls is their adoption,
01:35issuing them a faux birth certificate, and even taking them out in public in strollers.
01:39But how on earth could a pornographic love doll,
01:42made explicitly for adult use, be seen as a mental health tool?
01:46The truth is, men who choose dolls over human women for romantic companionship
01:51have been around for years, but they try to fly under the radar
01:55for their highly unusual relationships.
01:57It's the difference between being alone and lonely.
02:00Being alone is one thing. I don't mind being alone at all.
02:04I'm missing her already, I can tell you that. That's no lie.
02:08The idea of men falling in love with silicone dolls,
02:11designed for adult playtime, has made its way into pop culture,
02:15like on 30 Rock, when both James Franco and Tracy Morgan
02:18had storylines about their respective love dolls.
02:22Randy, this is James Franco, and our friend, Kimiko-tan.
02:26Hey, Randy.
02:28The life-size Tracy Jordan s***caller selling like hotcakes in Japan.
02:32Tracy, get out of the hallway.
02:34Or am I?
02:35Or how about Ryan Gosling's 2007 film, Lars and the Real Girl?
02:41The award-winning movie earned praise for depicting a sensitive,
02:44funny, and sincere story of Lars, a kind but socially awkward young man
02:49who develops a non-sexual romantic love affair with a real doll named Bianca.
02:54You know, Bianca's a missionary.
02:58Well, was a missionary, right, sorry.
03:00Because she was raised by nuns.
03:02But now she's on a sabbatical so she can experience the world.
03:05But what if the artificial companion of your dreams
03:07is one that can talk and move on its own?
03:10Thanks to sci-fi fantasies and imaginative tech companies,
03:14robot companions aren't a thing of the future.
03:17They're already here.
03:18At Tesla, you can now own a humanoid, AI-powered robot.
03:21Just ask Kim Kardashian about hers.
03:23Okay, hi.
03:27Can you do this?
03:29I love you.
03:30You know how to do that?
03:32Popular Twitch streamer Kai Sennett gifted one of Tesla's robots to Snoop Dogg,
03:36giving viewers a glimpse of how the AI bot behaves in a real social environment.
03:40So, is the concept of cozying up to realistic dolls and AI robots a total freak show?
03:45Or is it just the way of the future?
03:47Considering the massive amounts of money needed to acquire these kinds of artificial companions,
03:51you'd need to be pretty wealthy to be this lonely.
