00:00Let's get to know the people who are tirelessly helping street children
00:04as their way of looking at the inside after their child recovered from cancer.
00:11Their dedication and love gives inspiration to many.
00:16We will be joined live here in the studio by Ethad and Mommy Cheryl Gatchalian
00:21to share their inspiring story.
00:25Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine, Filipinas.
00:28At Good News Profi, Ethad was cancer-free for around 3 years and he was able to recover.
00:34Thank you, Lord, for all the good news.
00:38But at that early age, 13 years old, he was diagnosed with brain cancer.
00:44As a mother, what did you feel here?
00:47When I heard from the doctor that my son had brain cancer,
00:51I think this is the hardest news to hear from a parent.
00:56My heart felt like it was crushed.
00:59Many thoughts entered my mind.
01:01Will he be able to have surgery? Will he be able to go through chemo?
01:05Will he be able to live?
01:07So, those were the thoughts that troubled our family.
01:11And then, what we did is to ask Our Lady of Guadalupe
01:17to protect him with his mantle, with the mantle of protection for him.
01:23And we asked for prayers during his surgery.
01:28There were around more than 300 who signed up for the Rosary Brigade
01:33and prayed the Novena with us during the 14 hours of surgery.
01:3714 hours? That's a long time of surgery.
01:40And he understands in Australia, right?
01:42Yes, we did the surgery in Australia.
01:45And the doctor, when we finished the operation,
01:50the first sentence was, we saved Ethan's life.
01:53Thank you, Lord.
01:54So, it was really blessed that he's here with us.
01:58Ethan, how are you?
02:00I was talking to Ethan before we go on air.
02:04And I really like his fighting spirit, his optimism and how he handled the situation.
02:10Ethan, tell us your story.
02:12How did you know that you were diagnosed with brain cancer and how did you survive it?
02:17Who are you most thankful to now that you're cancer-free for three years already?
02:22My initial feeling was scared.
02:25It was the most difficult time in my life.
02:29But when I realized that God will be there, God will save me,
02:36I realized that there's nothing to worry about.
02:38God will always be there for me as long as we pray and never give up.
02:47A lot of people are praying for you, Ethan.
02:49Yes.
02:49And they say that prayers can really make miracles and we see a living miracle through you.
02:56How did you manage to bring this miracle back to others through charity works?
03:05Yes.
03:05You've done a lot of charity activities.
03:09Tell us about that.
03:10The Angels for Street Kids started 13 years ago.
03:18We've been monthly feeding places in Metro Manila.
03:22We've been giving slippers, t-shirts, food items to help alleviate the poverty of our Filipino people.
03:33And Ethan started to join after he got healed.
03:37He wanted to join us one time.
03:38So I told him to join us.
03:40And when he joined us, he said,
03:41Oh, this is nice.
03:43And what happened in one of the feedings?
03:45Well, for me, the standout point in all of the charity work we've done
03:51is when we were invited by Fr. Gaudi to go to Toledo to help the children.
04:00And when we were there, we gave school supplies and food to the school and to the kids.
04:09And again, we gave t-shirts, slippers, and rosary bracelets to all the kids.
04:15And they were so happy.
04:17And the standout point was when we gave ice cream to them.
04:20They were all like joyfully cheering around me, surrounding me with happiness.
04:26And at that moment, seeing the smiles on their faces, it was all worth it.
04:31Okay.
04:32Ethan, for you, what is the most memorable charitable event that you've joined?
04:38Yeah.
04:40That's what I just explained.
04:41That moment where I saw that all the kids were smiling, surrounding me with happiness and joy.
04:47It just made me think that this was all for this.
04:53Seeing the smiles on their faces, that charity event in Toledo was definitely the standout.
05:00And that experience with giving out ice cream, all the kids were just immersed in happiness.
05:05That just made my heart really be happy for them because seeing their smiles.
05:14It may be a small thing to others, but it's a big factor for us to see people like this,
05:21smiling whenever you give small things to them, like ice cream.
05:25That's true.
05:26And you know, when you hear stories like this, the feeling of gratitude.
05:31Yes.
05:32There are so many blessings around you.
05:34You have just to be thankful.
05:36Alright, what are your plans, Ethan, now that you're cancer-free for three years already?
05:41And I understand you're studying in Australia.
05:43What are your plans for yourself?
05:47Well, for myself, I just want to help as many people as I can.
05:53I'm currently studying, but I want to make an impact on people's lives and help benefit them.
06:06Maybe some of our countrymen are also going through the same thing.
06:12Maybe some of our viewers have family members who also have cancer.
06:17Maybe coming from a parent, what would you like to say to them?
06:21I think what's important is to believe in God.
06:24In situations like this, like cancer, there's no treatment, expensive treatment,
06:31you don't know if it's going to work or not.
06:34What's important is to believe in God.
06:37There's no other way to run in this difficult time.
06:40So, that's what we did.
06:42We prayed and prayed and asked the Lord for healing.
06:46And I think, Ethan's healing is a mission for us.
06:51We have a mission to help and inspire more people.
06:55Inspire them to pray, inspire them to be hopeful that there's a future right ahead.
07:02And this is where we established Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Pilgrim Queen of the family,
07:09where we help advocate the devotion to Our Lady.
07:13And we had a fiesta the other day for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe,
07:20where we had the feeding for 500 people.
07:23And we were able to give out a lot of Christmas goodies.
07:28At that time, we were able to make the family happy.
07:33Ethan?
07:34Ma'am?
07:35Go ahead, Ethan.
07:37And from earlier, wait.
07:42Your message?
07:43Yeah.
07:44My message is that I want, whenever I go through difficulty,
07:50I think that we should always look to God, pray to God.
07:55Because as my mom told me, we should always,
08:00when we have faith and trust in God's plan, anything's possible.
08:05And we can get through any difficulty.
08:07And when we go out to the places, we always promote Our Lady of Guadalupe.
08:15And always promote prayer to the children,
08:18especially when we give them rosary bracelets.
08:20And just getting them to pray at a young age.
08:23Amen.
08:24Thank you so much, Our Lady of Guadalupe.
08:26I mean, this is answered prayer.
08:29And thank you so much for the inspiration you brought to us this morning.
08:32Yes, Ethan, you were about to say?
08:35And earlier when you were asking me about what for my purpose,
08:41I always saw that when I was healed, I was given a second chance at life.
08:47And I knew God had a plan for me.
08:54And that I could be His hands and feet to act and spread His word.
09:00Thank you so much.
09:01Thank you very much, Mommy Cheryl Gatchalian.
09:04And Ethan, thank you for sharing this story of inspiration.
09:08And thank you Our Lady of Guadalupe for this miracle for Ethan and his family.
