00:00There are a lot of foods at McDonald's that get a bad rap.
00:04It is fast food, after all.
00:05The chicken nuggets have long been under fire for their questionable ingredients, and they've
00:10somehow managed to squeeze 19 ingredients into something as simple as French fries.
00:16But every restaurant has to have at least a few safe menu options, right?
00:20One item that has long been touted as a smart choice is the Filet-O-Fish, but some Reddit
00:25posters claiming to be ex-McDonald's workers are doing their best to blow that option out
00:30of the water.
00:31An insanely popular Reddit post asking fast food workers what customers should never order
00:36has garnered nearly 16,000 responses, and a large chunk of those responses have been
00:41dedicated to the beloved fish option from the Golden Arches.
00:44But the problem with the Filet-O-Fish isn't what you might think.
00:48It's not that the always-perfectly-square patty isn't actual fish, it is.
00:53McDonald's uses wild-caught Alaska Pollock from Certified Sustainable Fisheries.
00:58Sounds great, right?
00:59So what's the problem?
01:00Give me back that Filet-O-Fish, give me that fish!
01:05Turns out, that wild-caught fish still might not be fresh.
01:09At all.
01:10In fact, it could have been sitting around for hours before you take that first bite.
01:14One user said,
01:15"'No one orders Filet-O-Fish, so at my store they sat in the cabinet forever.'"
01:20Another person called it,
01:22The fast food equivalent of playing Russian roulette.
01:25Of course, you can always request to have yours made fresh, as many posters recommended,
01:30but even that isn't always a sure solution.
01:33Many posters claim a fresh patty is just one that's fresh out of the microwave, after having
01:38sat for a long time in the warmer.
01:41And even if you really are getting a fresh-cooked patty, that Filet-O-Fish may still be completely
01:46questionable, as one Reddit poster who claimed to be an eight-year veteran of McDonald's
01:51unveiled even more dirt on this seafood favorite.
01:54The patties had a tendency to hang around well past their use-by timer.
01:59Similarly, the tartar sauce could go through several days sitting out in basically room
02:03temperature conditions.
02:05Ew.
02:06Not enough to turn you off?
02:07No worries, he kept going, claiming the fryer oil for the fish filets was rarely cleaned.
02:13He finished up with,
02:14Don't get steamed buns, no one ever cleans the steamer.
02:18Despite all this, some loyal Filet-O-Fish fans won't be swayed.
02:22As somebody who regularly orders it, I have to disagree.
02:25It's by far the best fish sandwich that any fast food place has.
02:30According to McDonald's, the sandwich is still a popular seller, both in the U.S. and other
02:34countries around the world.
02:36Something tells us that won't change anytime soon.
