00:06territory that was seized from Syria.
00:11Ireland calls Israel's decision to close its Dublin embassy regrettable, but says it won't
00:16change its stance on the war in Gaza.
00:21Cleanup operations begin in the French overseas territory of Mayotte as officials scramble
00:26to establish a death toll from Cyclone Chido.
00:32The Israeli Knesset has approved plans to increase the number of settlers in the Golan
00:36Heights, territory that was seized from Syria in 1967.
00:41The announcement comes a week after the dramatic downfall of longtime President Bashar al-Assad.
00:47The demographic development plan to double settler numbers only applies to the area of
00:51the Golan Heights that Israel seized during the Six-Day War and later annexed in 1981.
00:57There are currently an estimated 31,000 Israelis living in settlements considered illegal under
01:03international law across the Golan Heights.
01:06Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the plan, which comes with 10 million
01:11euros in funding.
01:12But he also said Israel wasn't seeking a conflict with Syria.
01:17We have no interest in conflict with Syria.
01:19We will accept Israel's policy towards Syria according to the reality of the situation
01:25on the ground.
01:26I remind you that for decades Syria was an active enemy to Israel.
01:33It attacked us again and again.
01:35It is possible for others to attack us from the ground.
01:38It is possible for Iran to conquer Hezbollah through the ground.
01:42Since rebel groups marched into Damascus and brought an end to al-Assad's 24-year rule,
01:47Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes across Syria.
01:51Officials say those strikes are aimed at destroying weapons dumps to prevent them falling into
01:56the hands of terrorists.
01:58But they have been criticized by Syria's de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharar, who said they
02:02crossed red lines and risked escalating tensions across the Middle East.
02:08Ireland's Prime Minister Simon Harris has called Israel's decision to close its embassy
02:16in Dublin deeply regrettable.
02:18But he also said his government wouldn't change its position on how the war in Gaza is being
02:23fought.
02:24Israel announced on Sunday it would close its mission in the Irish capital because of
02:28what officials called extreme anti-Israel policies.
02:32I will push back very strongly against any attempt by any country to misrepresent Ireland's
02:37position.
02:38Ireland is not anti-Israeli, but Ireland is absolutely anti-disturbation of children,
02:45is absolutely anti-killing of civilians and is absolutely pro-peace, pro-international
02:52law and pro-democracy.
02:54Meanwhile, Israeli forces have continued to pound Gaza's largely isolated north as the
02:59Palestinian death toll approaches 45,000.
03:03One airstrike hit the Qalila Wada school in the town of Beit Hanoun and killed at least
03:0715 people, according to nearby Kamal Adwan hospital where casualties were taken.
03:13And in Gaza City, at least 17 people, including six women and five children, were killed in
03:18three airstrikes that hit houses sheltering displaced people.
03:22Israel's military said in a statement that it struck a terrorist cell in Gaza City and
03:27a terrorist meeting point in the Beit Hanoun area.
03:30The war in Gaza began after Hamas stormed southern Israel on the 7th of October last
03:35year, killing 1,200 people and taking around 250 others hostage.
03:46Earlier this month, Islamist opposition rebels toppled al-Assad's regime.
03:51Many came out to the street to celebrate but serious Kurds in the north worry for their
03:55future.
03:57Many fear the ascendance of the Turkish-backed Islamist group who overthrew al-Assad will
04:01make it hard for the Kurds to find a new place in Syria.
04:26The Kurdish administration issued amnesty for prisoners to celebrate the fall of al-Assad's
04:49regime.
04:50It comes after the opening of prisons in areas of Syria that were previously controlled by
04:54the government.
05:03At least two people were injured and an infrastructure facility damaged in the Ukrainian city of
05:08Mykolaiv after a Russian overnight drone and missile attack, regional authorities said
05:13on Sunday.
05:14Local media report that Russia had launched a total of 108 drones and an anti-aircraft
05:20missile during the night as part of the ongoing aerial campaign against Ukraine.
05:25Ukraine's air force said the military had successfully shot down 56 of these drones.
05:33Across the border in the Russian city of Belgorod, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said a
05:39Ukrainian drone attack had killed a 9-year-old boy.
05:46Gladkov reported that 37 drones had been fired on the area within a 24-hour period.
05:52One of these attacks reportedly struck a residential building in the village of Metski, killing
05:57the boy and injuring his mother and sister.
06:04Two Russian oil tankers were badly damaged in a storm in the Kerch Strait, spilling oil
06:09and sparking an emergency rescue operation.
06:13One tanker ran aground and had its bow torn away, with Russian media saying one person
06:18on board was killed while the rest were saved by emergency services.
06:23The second tanker was also damaged in the storm and left drifting in the same area with
06:28its crew members aboard.
06:30Ukrainian officials accused Moscow of recklessness, saying the tankers were too old to go out
06:35in a storm.
06:44The Atreno festival concluded on Sunday with an address by Italy's prime minister, Giorgio
06:52Meloni, originally founded as Italy's right-wing youth festival.
06:56The week-long event has evolved into a way to celebrate Giorgio Meloni's government,
07:01which two years after taking office is emerging as one of the most stable in the country's
07:07history.
07:08Meloni said that political stability, quote, is what makes Italy more credible both nationally
07:14and internationally.
07:16And she also said she's confident the government will serve its full term.
07:20And she announced that she's about to step down as the president of the ECR, supporting
07:26Poland's Morawiecki as the next head of the group.
07:30On Saturday, key speakers at the cross-party summit included Lebanese Prime Minister Mikati
07:37and Argentina's President Javier Mele.
07:39We understand that the free trade deal between the EU and the Mercosur states, which include
07:45Argentina, has been reported as a central topic in Mele's discussions with Meloni.
07:52In fact, like other EU countries, Italy remains hesitant to support the deal unless it includes
08:01provisions to protect Italian farmers.
08:04George Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
08:11Pope Francis and French President Emmanuel Macron met in Corsica, concluding the pontiff's
08:17trip to the French island.
08:19The LSA Palace said the two discussed the international issues that they share.
08:26Local media report that their conversation avoided more controversial subjects, such
08:31as the constitutionalisation of abortion or French-style secularism.
08:38Earlier, Francis became the first pope to visit the French island of Corsica.
08:44He had deliberately shunned the grand reopening of France's Notre Dame Cathedral last weekend,
08:49instead visiting the French island where thousands of migrants have perished.
08:55The pope's visit to Corsica seemed more suited to his priorities, which are adamant
09:00in visiting places that do not often draw international attention.
09:11Clean-up operations have begun in the French overseas territory of Mayotte a day after
09:16cyclone Chido barrelled into the archipelago.
09:19The French Interior Ministry said it was proving difficult to get a precise tally of fatalities,
09:24but so far 11 deaths have been confirmed.
09:27Speaking to a local TV station earlier on Sunday, Mayotte's prefect said he thought
09:32the death toll could reach 1,000.
09:35A local hospital reported that nine people were in critical condition there and 246 others
09:41were injured.
09:42One local hospital said it was treating 246 people for injuries and that nine were in
09:48a critical condition.
09:49Chido brought winds in excess of 220 kilometers an hour, according to the French Weather Service,
09:55ripping roofs off houses in the territory which has a population of just over 300,000.
10:00In some areas, entire neighborhoods of metal shacks and huts were flattened while residents
10:05reported trees had been uprooted and electricity supplies knocked out.
10:09Officials in Mayotte said it was the worst cyclone to hit the territory in almost a century.
10:15The French Interior Ministry said 1,600 police officers have been deployed to help the population
10:21and prevent potential looting.
10:23The cyclone has now made landfall on the east coast of Africa, slamming into northern Mozambique.
10:28UNICEF said Cabo Delgado province, home to around two million people, had been hard hit.
10:34The agency is now concerned about access to health care and the spread of waterborne diseases
10:39like cholera and malaria.
10:46Roughly 5,000 Santas of different ages are running to raise money for Kosovo's annual
10:52charity marathon.
10:53This year, they are supporting the hospital's pediatric branch for children.
10:59Meanwhile in France, organizers were handing out the classic red and white hats and overcoats
11:04to thousands of Santas, as well as one Grinch.
11:07They all ran 10 kilometers in the annual fundraising run in southern Paris.
11:12The Grinch is also the Christmas spirit.
11:14But in the end, the story ends well.
11:16He's a nice Grinch.
11:18He's not the evil Grinch.
11:19And in Hungary's Budapest, hundreds of runners braved the cold.
11:35The run is in its 21st year, with entry fees going to charities during the holiday season.
11:42Ho-ho!
