00:00It's the most wonderful time of the year, but it's also the deadliest time of the year
00:06because of the increasing cases of stroke and heart attack during this time.
00:12The so-called holiday effect?
00:14In the FitTrack report of Danutin Cungco.
00:22As Christmas break or vacation approaches,
00:26the social calendar of many is busy and busy.
00:29But the workout and jetta are also included in the vacation.
00:32But doctors are careful not to be a killjoy.
00:36They are careful in drinking and preparing.
00:39Because during the holiday season, the incidence of stroke and heart disease increases.
00:44It is possible to increase the number of people who are falling asleep due to their stroke,
00:48heart attack cases, and other heart problems
00:51from the last day of December until the beginning of January.
00:56You can actually see a very linear surge of stroke patients by January or even at the end of December.
01:04They're usually the ones with other risk factors.
01:07Increased alcohol consumption, increased stress, it could have triggered the problem.
01:12It could have made the condition worse.
01:14According to one study in Norway, the days after Christmas are the deadliest time of the year.
01:22In studies in Australia and Taiwan,
01:24the chance of a person dying from stroke and hospitalization during Christmas is higher.
01:31This is called the holiday effect.
01:34This is also one of the reasons.
01:37During the holidays, there is lack of manpower in the hospital because of the holiday season.
01:43Some of the hospitals, some services are not readily available as it should be on a regular basis.
01:49This is the holiday effect.
01:50There is also a higher risk of stroke in the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.
01:55Then, there is an excess of partying and drinking during the holiday season.
01:59We are seeing actually a surge in cholesterol, BP, because of the lack of exercise and bad diet.
02:07To be healthy during Christmas, avoid overeating and drinking, and still exercise.
02:15But how can you work out if you can't move because of the traffic?
02:20Or your party calendar is full?
02:22You can do basic weightlifting at home.
02:25You can use bottled water instead of using bands.
02:29Use bodyweight exercises.
02:31Bodyweight exercises or weightlifting can actually lower down your blood sugar.
02:35You can take a jog outside of your house or you have a treadmill or bicycle at home.
02:41You can actually do some cardio at home.
02:43It will lower down your blood pressure.
02:45You just need 30 minutes of exercise, 3 to 4 times a week,
02:48and that is more than enough to lower down the risk for heart problem, cardiovascular events, and stroke.
02:55I'm Donna Tengkungco, reporting for GMA Integrated News.
