00:00In our sports banter, we will interview the coach of the National University Pep Squad, Coach Gab Bahakan.
00:07Good morning, Coach Gab!
00:10Good morning, Coach!
00:11Good morning, good morning!
00:14Coach Gab, how do you feel that after two years, you were able to win the title here in the cheering Pep Squad?
00:22We are very happy.
00:26We were very inspired for the team because we were really waiting for this.
00:36After the transactions that happened last year, we were able to prove that the National University Pep Squad is still the National University Pep Squad.
00:47We were able to win the UAAP Cheer Dance Competition.
00:56Coach, we know that you have been through a lot.
01:01The NU will never forgive you.
01:04You were always on top of the UAAP Cheer Dance Competition.
01:10But last season, the FEU won.
01:15And you were the ones who finished in second place.
01:17So I'm sure this past season of your preparation, Coach,
01:23your team's determination to return to the top was also amazing.
01:29So please tell us about the journey leading up to this season's cheer dance competition.
01:37We prepared early because, from our experience last year,
01:44we decided to prepare early because we knew that we were lacking in preparation for the team
01:51so that we could get the gold last year.
01:55So we prepared in February.
01:58We decided which team to use earlier.
02:06Based on the stunts that we were going to use,
02:09we were able to divide our work among all the coaches that I was with.
02:16It was a good preparation for the champion that the NU Pep Squad won.
02:22That's why our management was very excited.
02:26We were with the NU and the NU community.
02:30Coach, you know, I've been watching cheer dance competitions for so long.
02:36When it comes to innovative stunts and innovative dance,
02:42what do we call it? A windmill or a ferris wheel?
02:46It's different, right? It's like a circus.
02:50Actually, when we did that, we didn't call it anything.
02:55We just get inspiration from ballroom moves, Latin dance, and dance sports.
03:05Our coach, Coach Carl Pabilonia,
03:09was very creative to put in this kind of movement in the pyramid.
03:15So maybe the supporters call it a windmill or a ferris wheel.
03:20It was very fun. Even our supporters gave their names to what we were doing.
03:29Coach, we saw your performance.
03:33We can say that it was out of this world.
03:37How did your concept of the universe start?
03:42Please explain it to us.
03:45To be honest, it started with Men in Black.
03:50One of the themes that we chose was Men in Black.
03:56And because we were with our management,
04:00we needed to...
04:04It was like we were doing a thesis.
04:06We were defending the different themes of why this is what we wanted.
04:10Fortunately, our management chose Men in Black.
04:15But they didn't like the word Men in Black because they didn't understand it.
04:21So we decided from that concept.
04:24We redesigned it.
04:26We made a new presentation.
04:29Men in Black, let's make it an astronaut.
04:33And then there are aliens.
04:35So our concept was out of the world.
04:37Our point of view was out of the universe.
04:42So it's easier for them to understand.
04:44Because all genders and all ages need to understand our concept.
04:53Coach Gab, if not everyone knows,
04:56Cheer Dance Competition is highly athletic.
04:59And I've noticed that they are all gymnasts.
05:02They can do all the cartwheels and back handsprings.
05:06Is it a requirement for any pep squad to have a background in gymnastics?
05:15To be honest, yes.
05:17They need to have a gymnastics background.
05:21Because in cheerleading and cheer dance,
05:25we have five elements.
05:27And it's easier for us to train the gymnast already.
05:31So they have four elements to understand.
05:34Their body awareness is also better.
05:39It's easier for us to explain to them
05:43the figures or forms that we need.
05:49It's a big advantage if you're a gymnast.
05:52But we're still getting cheerleaders from high schools.
05:58Through time and dedication,
06:02you'll learn what you want to do.
06:05And again,
06:08any pep squad can't complete without the three basic needs.
06:15It's the good management,
06:17the good athlete,
06:19and also the good cheerleaders that we have.
06:22If everyone has discipline,
06:24our sport will continue to progress.
06:27And it's easier to do things.
06:30Coach, just like what we said earlier,
06:33NU has a dynasty when it comes to cheer dance competition.
06:40And we could say that it's one of the greatest dynasties in Philippine sports history.
06:47But the danger here is,
06:50how do you maintain the hunger
06:55so that you won't be left behind?
06:57So that you'll still be on top?
06:59How do you do that?
07:04We seek knowledge.
07:07We still need to study.
07:10Even the coaches need to learn more.
07:13The sport is still progressive.
07:17We still have goals.
07:19We wanted to compete abroad, internationally.
07:23And we want the kids to showcase their talent there.
07:28Those are our goals.
07:30They push us to work really hard
07:41so that we can get what we want.
07:44Because we believe that this is not the only talent in the Philippines.
07:50It's not just NU PEPS,
07:52it's the whole cheerleading community.
07:54We still have goals.
07:56Despite of us winning the championship in UAAT,
08:01there are still many things that we need to learn.
08:05And that's what we need to pursue
08:08so that we can improve our craft.
08:13Coach, upon watching your dance, your routine,
08:17there are many high-level elements that you incorporated into your routine.
08:21What were the challenges that you encountered while building this routine?
08:28Actually, we had an injury two months prior to the competition.
08:33We had an injured dancer.
08:36And then we had to change her right away.
08:40So the months of preparation of one of our athletes,
08:44she will only do it for two months.
08:47So it was really hard.
08:49We had an outbreak within our team.
08:56So we had breaks in between.
08:59And we had to isolate the person.
09:03After a week,
09:05there was another outbreak.
09:09So our training was stopped.
09:12Things like that.
09:14And also, of course, their mentality towards the competition.
09:22Sometimes, they also have a hard time.
09:25So we had to divert their misses from their families.
09:31Because we chose people from the province.
09:34So we had to gather them together
09:39so that they can focus on our goal as a team.
09:43Coach Gob, you mentioned that there was an outbreak in your team.
09:50How did you maintain the mental toughness of your team?
09:53I'm sure all of them panicked.
09:55Because, of course, our training was stopped.
09:59So how did you maintain the mental toughness of the whole team?
10:02So that they won't be broken inside?
10:05We keep telling them that they can handle the challenges.
10:11Because it's part of the process of being a champion.
10:16They have to pay for their heart and mind.
10:22Because this is a part of their history.
10:28They will share this with their future generations.
10:34They competed in the UAAP and became a champion.
10:37So we keep showing them that they are good athletes.
10:44And they have the discipline to win the championship.
10:50Coach, tell us a little bit about your behind-the-scenes.
10:55You told us earlier about your concept.
10:58Do you have a routine like this?
11:01Do you have a concept or do you have a plan?
11:05The concept comes later on.
11:07How did you build the process?
11:12We already had a meeting with the management about our team.
11:19We don't have the skills yet.
11:22But after that, we give them the skill sets that they need.
11:29We have a ranking.
11:32This ranking is for all the athletes that we have.
11:36They will show us the moves that they want.
11:40For the cheer dance.
11:42We will choose them one by one.
11:45From the 56 athletes that we have,
11:48we will rank them from 1 to 30.
11:51From 1 to 30, they will compete for the cheer dance.
11:57After that, we will give them the skills that we want.
12:02Like the stunts.
12:03As you can see, this is the pyramid.
12:06We will give it to the person who will do it.
12:11We will divide our work among the coaches.
12:16This pyramid is for Coach Karl.
12:18Our first pyramid during the drum part is from Coach Nikki.
12:23And I'm the one doing the last pyramid.
12:26We will divide our work to make it easier.
12:30From the design, from the concept, from all.
12:33We did our whole routine for UAE FIFA.
12:41Coach Gab, I noticed that your routine is getting harder and harder.
12:45But how do you ensure that for the next competitions, you will surpass this?
12:50We have backup routines and stunts.
12:59Prior to UAE FIFA Cheer Dance,
13:01we already have stunts and pyramids that they will do.
13:07They just need to execute this for the next couple of months
13:12so that we will know if we can include this in the UAE FIFA.
13:17Like the two stunts that we have in the Cheer Dance,
13:21it was designed 2 years ago or 3 years ago.
13:29We can't include it in our routine
13:32because if we need it in our last minute changes,
13:37if they can do it, we will change it.
13:41For the first time, our reverse kick-up was 2 years ago.
13:46We need to release it.
13:49So we will know if our athletes are well-prepared for that certain stunts
13:55for the Cheer Dance competition.
13:59Coach, you said that your preparation and conceptualization is very long.
14:09You don't need to say which coach,
14:11but do you already have a concept for your next season?
14:19Actually, we already have one.
14:21I'm looking at doing a Formula 1 race racing.
14:28It's just part of the idea.
14:31But we will fight with the coaches first
14:34on which teams they want.
14:37It's up to the management
14:39if our preparation is good for them
14:41so that they can understand our team
14:43and what they will choose.
14:45That's how we need to think earlier
14:48so that the Cheer Dance will be a good production
14:56so that it will have a good result in the end.
14:59Coach, we're excited for F1.
15:02Definitely a fast-paced racing concept.
15:07Coach?
15:09We already have a lot of supporters
15:12who already sent their ideas for the theme.
15:16I think we can get a lot from them
15:18and we will make a presentation for our management.
15:23For the fans,
15:24just put your suggestions in Coach's inbox.
15:28Yes, that's right.
15:29I'm sure a lot of people will comment
15:31and suggest their theme.
15:34Coach, finally, a message to your supporters and fans.
15:39Thank you so much to the NU community.
15:43They are really great supporters.
15:47And also to our management, Mr. Macario Gao.
15:52Thank you so much for your support.
15:55We will not be the NU Pep Squad
15:58if it's not for your support.
16:00To my coaches and other staff,
16:03Coach Nikki, Coach Carl, Coach Neil, Coach Glenn,
16:08Ms. Pam, Ms. Pat.
16:10And also to our former coaches
16:12who are always there to support us
16:14and zoom in to support us,
16:16Coach Jika and Coach Estong.
16:19To Coach K, who is our consultant
16:22and Coach Jim Lloyd.
16:24And also to our DJ,
16:26who made our music, DJ Lester.
16:28Thank you so much.
16:31To our Lord, who is always there to guide us.
16:34To Fist Manila, who prays for us.
16:36And also, we can mention our sponsor.
16:40We are just thankful.
16:46Go, Coach! Go!
16:48Yes, to Mogu Mogu, who really helps us
16:51to improve our costumes.
16:55Also, thank you so much.
16:57Thank you so much.
16:59Coach Gab Bahakan,
17:01the head coach of NU Bulldogs Pep Squad.
