00:00Spoilers ahead in this one for the new Sonic movie Sonic 3, but there's been an interesting
00:04phenomenon going on at theaters this holiday season that is causing a lot of hubbub. In this
00:08new movie, when Maria Robotnik dies, people are scared. Audiences are going to cheer. They've
00:14been putting up posters and signs in movie theaters saying, please do not cheer for a
00:18child being murdered from a certain flashback scene. Why is this happening, you might ask?
00:22Well, let's dive into it. Shortly after the trailer dropped for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at
00:25the end of last year, 2023, fans started joking and posting memes immediately talking about how
00:30they were going to cheer for Maria's on-screen death. This was, of course, ironic, or post-ironic
00:35even, as Maria's death is very tragic and well understood in the Sonic community. It's maybe
00:40the darkest mainstream aspect of the series, and so the joke hits a little harder. POV, you cheered
00:44Maria's death at the theater? Flash forward to the movie's release, and people really might actually
00:48go and cheer. I mean, we thought no one would actually show up to Area 51, right? And look
00:52how that went.
