00:00It's really a different type of Filipino Christmas because here in our country,
00:03it's only September and we're already starting to prepare for Christmas
00:07and putting decorations for our homes.
00:11You're right, Dianne, but some of those are decorative or decorated.
00:16That's why it's a bit heavy to pay, especially for the bills.
00:21How can we save and be more energy efficient this holiday season?
00:26Let's find out from Director Patrick T. Aquino, Season 3.
00:29Director 4 of the Energy Utilization Management Bureau of the Department of Energy.
00:35Good morning, Director Patrick. Welcome back to Rise and Shine, Filipina.
00:38Good morning.
00:40Good morning, Miss Dianne and Sir Audrey and to those watching and listening to Rise and Shine this morning.
00:47Sir Patrick, why is energy efficiency important during Christmas?
00:53How can this help our fellow Filipinos?
00:57Actually, it's not just during Christmas that energy efficiency is important
01:02or why we use our energy.
01:06But during Christmas, we have more decorations, like you mentioned.
01:12Our advice to our fellow Filipinos is, of course, when we install,
01:17we won't prohibit them from using Christmas lights.
01:22Let's use the more efficient ones. We already have LED lights.
01:27And now that the weather is getting colder,
01:30we can reduce the use of air conditioners and use electric fans.
01:37And since many of our fellow Filipinos will receive bonuses,
01:42their savings, if they buy our appliances,
01:46we will continue to remind them to look at the energy label.
01:51This is blue and yellow, which are marked on our appliances.
01:57And choose the ones with more stars.
01:591 to 5, the 5 stars are the most efficient.
02:02Or the higher number, if that's what you want to look at.
02:06Okay. Well, Sir, we all know that during Christmas,
02:10we have our own decorations, especially the Christmas lights,
02:15how can Filipinos save electricity while using Christmas lights
02:19and other types of electronic decorations?
02:24Our advice is always important.
02:28If we are going to buy Christmas lights,
02:31let's change and shift to LED lights.
02:35Second, we have DTI with us.
02:38When we buy Christmas lights,
02:40we have to make sure that it has an ICC or PS mark
02:45so that we can be sure that we won't get burned.
02:50Third, let's not use octopuses.
02:55Christmas lights have a lot of spots.
03:00If we just follow this, of course, it's fine.
03:04It's also better if there's light,
03:07then we'll turn off the Christmas lights.
03:11Again, let's remember,
03:13the Christmas lights that you use, LED,
03:16has an ICC or PS mark,
03:18and if there's light, you can turn it off.
03:23So let's be conscious in our purchasing decisions.
03:27And check the label.
03:28Those are practical tips.
03:30Now, Director Patrick, when it's time for meetings or parties,
03:34what are some tips that you can give to our cars
03:37so that they can save on energy consumption?
03:44Of course, when we have gatherings,
03:49we can do it outdoors if it's not raining.
03:56So we don't have to use room air conditioners.
04:01When it comes to cooking food for our gatherings,
04:06of course, our recommendation is to use energy efficient.
04:10Based on our studies,
04:12if we're going to use induction or electric cooking,
04:18it saves more if we compare it to LPG.
04:23And definitely, when we're cooking,
04:29we have to make sure that the heat is strong
04:35so that we can consume more efficiently when cooking.
04:41Sir, are there ways for Filipino families
04:46to inhabit energy efficiency this holiday season?
04:52That's a good question.
04:54Of course, because the weather is getting colder,
04:59we always look at whether we need to turn on the air conditioner.
05:04Or if we're going to look at our things,
05:07we'll just switch to an electric panel.
05:10Our recommendation, especially now,
05:13because our kids can see what they're doing,
05:18that if we're not using the appliance,
05:21we should turn it off or turn off the power.
05:24If the appliance has a standby power,
05:28it's still consuming electricity.
05:30That's why our recommendation,
05:32before going out of the room or in the office,
05:35check if there are appliances that are left without power.
05:39Make sure that the power strip is switched off
05:42or turn it off.
05:45Sir, what role does the Renewable Energy Source play
05:49during the holiday season in the Philippines?
05:53Our Renewable Energy Resources are really important.
05:57Many of our households and businesses
06:01are installing our Renewable Energy Sources,
06:04such as rooftop solar.
06:07Our advice to our fellow Filipinos when it comes to this,
06:11just install solar PV installers in your metremes.
06:16Make sure that you coordinate it with your distribution utility
06:19or electric cooperative.
06:21And most importantly,
06:24we have opportunities for financing.
06:27If you are a member of SSS, Pag-ibig, or GSIS,
06:31you can avail of long-term financing loads
06:37so that we can afford to install.
06:39When we install Renewable Energy,
06:42such as solar PV,
06:44we can reduce our consumption.
06:47And most importantly, we can help our environment.
06:51The payback period, according to our studies,
06:54does not exceed 5 or 8 years.
06:57Okay, Director.
06:58Let's talk about these establishments
07:01that use electricity a lot.
07:04Sir, how can offices and commercial establishments
07:09save energy during the holiday season?
07:15Sir Audrey, just like what we are reminding our fellow Filipinos,
07:20our reportorial requirements
07:23under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act
07:26for April 15, 2025,
07:29for this year,
07:31just like our fellow Filipinos,
07:33our businesses need to pay their offices,
07:37especially after office hours,
07:41so that their appliances or equipment
07:44that do not need to be on standby
07:47can be switched off.
07:50And just like what we are reminding our fellow Filipinos,
07:54we can use the cold weather
07:58to reduce our use of air conditioners.
08:02Make sure that the thermostat is set to 24.
08:05But now, because it's cold,
08:07we don't need to lower the temperature.
08:09The weather is colder now
08:11than when the air conditioner is set to 24 degrees.
08:15And if possible,
08:16use natural ventilation and natural lighting
08:19to reduce the lighting and cooling requirements,
08:23especially now that our climate is cold.
08:27Lastly, Director Patrick,
08:29what is your message to our fellow Filipinos
08:32about energy efficiency during the Christmas season?
08:36Yes, this Christmas,
08:38the continuous reminder of our energy efficiency
08:42is that you have the power.
08:44Energy efficiency starts with you.
08:47Let's join together in the new Philippines,
08:49especially this Christmas.
08:52Thank you very much again, Director Patrick,
08:55for your time and of course for the practical tips
08:58to be energy efficient this Christmas.
09:01There you have it, CARSPIS,
09:02thanks to these tips,
09:04and of course,
09:05we won't have a headache after Christmas
09:08because you might have a problem with the electricity bill.
09:11Follow these tips from DOE.
09:14As they say, we have the power.
09:16Thank you, Director Patrick.
09:17Thank you very much.
