00:00Now as an interactive medium, video games are truly like no other art form, with developers
00:04able to reward active players who dig deep and attempt to experience every last thing that they
00:09include in their game. Easter eggs are an absolute joy in gaming that allow devs to tip the hat to
00:15curious and inquisitive players who venture off the beaten path by showing them something that
00:19players just sticking to the critical route wouldn't ever see. But not all easter eggs are
00:23created equal, and in the case of some, they're still waiting to be fully unveiled. So let's take
00:28a look at them as I'm Jules, this is WhatCulture.com, and these are 10 video game easter
00:32eggs that are still undiscovered. Number 10, the live Sega chant, Sonic Mania. Now Sonic Mania was
00:39first announced at Sega's 25th anniversary event for Sonic during San Diego Comic Con. And during
00:45the show, Sonic team producer Takashi Iizuka even had the live crowd record a rendition of the
00:50iconic Sega jingle to be included in the game as an easter egg. Now there are two takes from the
00:56crowd that were recorded for safety, and yet, more than six years removed from Sonic Mania's
01:00acclaimed release, the live Sega chant still hasn't been found. While players might have expected to
01:05hear it in the game's opening screen or perhaps during the end credits, it's present in neither
01:10case. Players have extensively trawled through Sonic Mania in an attempt to unlock the jingle
01:14and even datamined it to no avail, leaving fans to wonder quite how to trigger it. Others have
01:19speculated that the easter egg may have been cut during development due to the sound quality being
01:23too poor. Yet to date, there's still no concrete word from anyone involved with the game on it.
01:28Number nine, the 15th wish, Destiny 2. The Destiny 2 Forsaken expansion included a new
01:34raid mission called Last Wish, which contained a puzzle room where players could enter a sequence
01:39of symbols in order to solve a series of wishes. Now to date, 14 wishes have been found, but the
01:4515th, well it remains a pure mystery. Fans have racked their brains for the better part of five
01:49years trying to crack this code and get to the bottom of the 15th wish, with even some surmising
01:54that the last wish raid itself is the 15th wish, given its name and all. Despite this theory gaining
01:59substantial traction in recent years, Bungie still hasn't confirmed the truth one way or another,
02:04perhaps suggesting that it's nothing more than, wait for it, wishful thinking.
02:10Number eight, the 2113 box, Trials Evolution. Now Trials Evolution plays host to one of the
02:17greatest video game easter eggs, which while still ultimately unresolved, led players on one
02:21hell of a wild goose chase. You see, shortly after the game's 2012 release, players discovered that
02:26a series of planks throughout the physics-based platformer spelled out a cipher, which told players
02:31to perform a specific move on the bike, which in turn unlocked a hidden song that contained a
02:36secret piece of Morse code. Now the code took players to a website with a series of image
02:41ciphers and an equation, the answer to which unlocked a set of coordinates located in four
02:46cities, Helsinki, Sydney, Bath, and San Francisco. Fans around the globe teamed up to visit the
02:51coordinates, and in each case, a chest containing a key was found alongside a plaque. The back of
02:57each plaque read, midday in the year 2113, the first Saturday in August, one of the five keys
03:03will open the box underneath the Eiffel Tower. Now to be clear, developer RedLynx has arranged
03:08for one of the four keys, the fifth one being a digital key unlocked in the game, Trials Fusion,
03:12underneath the Eiffel Tower 101 years after the game's release. Incredibly, everyone involved in
03:18the easter eggs creation, and anyone who had discovered one of the keys will surely be long
03:22dead by 2113, ensuring only future generations have any chance at all of learning what's inside
03:27that chest.
03:287. Todd Howard's Terminal Secret – Fallout 4
03:32At DICE 2016, shortly after Fallout 4's release, game director Todd Howard revealed that there was
03:37still undiscovered easter eggs hidden in one of the game's many computer terminals. Bethesda's
03:41VP of Publishing, Pete Hines, eventually tweeted in 2018 that he knew some players had stumbled
03:46across the secret on social media, yet hadn't put two and two together and realised that it was
03:51the easter egg. In the years that followed, players continued trying to make sense of it,
03:54even activating noclip and literally teleporting inside each terminal to see if anything was
03:59cheekily hidden in there, but alas, nada. In 2020, popular YouTuber Juicehead claimed that
04:04the secret would reveal that the player was actually a synth all along, yet despite their
04:09passionate delivery, this was still just a theory without any cold, hard evidence.
04:13Almost eight years removed from Fallout 4's release, with Bethesda's latest AAA behemoth
04:17Starfield now out in the wild, we're seemingly no closer to figuring out what that damn terminal
04:22secret was.
04:226. The Aloha Ice Jam Shortcut – SSX Tricky
04:26Back in 2014, a Redditor by the name of UserTBTSyncro claimed to have worked on the hit
04:332001 snowboarding game SSX Tricky as a level designer, and revealed that the Aloha Ice Jam
04:39track had a secret shortcut which hadn't yet been discovered. The designer couldn't
04:42specifically remember how to trigger the shortcut, but knew that it involved grinding an invisible
04:46wall. This, in turn, energised SSX enthusiasts to hammer the track in search of the hidden trigger,
04:52but after eight years of searching and even a comprehensive datamine, it still hasn't been found.
04:57Those spearheading the datamining efforts considered their attempts exhausted,
05:01leading them to speculate that the shortcut could have been removed from the game during
05:04development. The designer themselves entertained the idea that it had actually been cut,
05:07though wasn't completely convinced either. All the same, without another person who worked on
05:11the game piping up and putting everyone out of their misery, this easter egg seems destined to
05:15remain unsolved forevermore.
05:175. The Startup Easter Egg – The Original Xbox
05:21In 2021, an anonymous developer who worked on the original Xbox console revealed an easter egg that
05:26was hidden in the Xbox's own dashboard. By ripping a music CD to the console and renaming the CD's
05:32title to Timmy with a lot of Ys, players would unlock a secret credit screen for the members
05:37of the Xbox dashboard team. This was initially assumed to be the last of several secrets
05:41discovered on the Xbox over the years, but the console's designer, Seamus Blackley,
05:45subsequently tweeted that another undiscovered easter egg was still waiting to be found.
05:49Blackley wouldn't give much away about the secret, though did reveal that it related to
05:53the console's boot animation, but curiously didn't require the player to perform any controller
05:57inputs whatsoever. Though Blackley is clearly relishing how thoroughly his responses have
06:01dumbfounded inquisitive players, this at least feels like one secret which might actually get
06:06solved one day, especially given how active Blackley is on social media. Here's hoping, at least.
06:104. The Endless Mode Mystery – Mega Man 9
06:14Shortly after Mega Man 9's release in 2008, Capcom's then-community manager, Seth Killian,
06:19posted on the company's forums that the game contained a secret which hadn't yet been found.
06:24This prompted the series' passionate fans to tear the game apart looking for this elusive secret,
06:28and though they did find a number of them, none were the specific one that Killian was
06:32cryptically referring to. Capcom later gave fans a hint by revealing that the easter egg could be
06:37found in Mega Man 9's endless attack mode, with comments from Capcom employees suggesting that
06:42it involved getting far enough in this mode to trigger, well, something. Yet in the years that
06:46followed, the trail ran cold, and with data mining also bringing up no fruitful leads,
06:50some fans accused Killian of fabricating a mystery to simply keep people talking about the game.
06:55In an interview shortly before Killian left Capcom, though, he insisted that the secret was
06:59real and would be confirmed if any player ever discovered it. Almost 15 years later,
07:04with no promising leads, though, most fans seem to have basically given up.
07:073. The Super Secret Easter Egg – Amplitude
07:11The reboot of legendary rhythm action game Amplitude was released in 2016,
07:15but more than three years later in August 2019, the game's official Twitter account
07:19asked a player who platformed it whether they'd found the super secret easter egg yet.
07:23When the player responded in the negative and asked if Amplitude players had reported
07:27finding said easter egg, the account replied that it was still undiscovered. Harmonix did
07:32give players a message of encouragement in 2020, though, claiming that they seemed to
07:35be on the right track to finding it, yet refused to elaborate for fear of fully spoiling the
07:39solution. In the three years since, a small but dedicated collection of fans have continued to
07:44comb their way through Amplitude in a desperate pursuit of this easter egg, yet it remains
07:48unknown to this very day. With the game's Twitter account having gone entirely radio
07:52silent in recent years, it sadly doesn't seem terribly likely that this mystery will ever be
07:56sewn up.
07:572. FF06B5 – Cyberpunk 2077
08:02Unlike the vast majority of the easter eggs on this list, Cyberpunk 2077's big undiscovered
08:07secret even has its own damn subreddit, which is a testament to how pervasively it has provoked,
08:12fascinated, and tortured the game's avid fanbase. On Union Street in the Corpo Plaza,
08:17players might notice a string of letters and numbers displayed on a robotic statue,
08:21FF06B5, which has been worshipped at all times by a group of monks. Even after data mining the
08:27game and scanning through every single piece of text that players can interact with, the
08:31sequence seemingly related to nothing. The game's quest designer, Paweł Sasko, later commented that
08:36players were indeed on the trail of a secret, though refrained from elaborating on it for fear
08:40of giving it away. Players have creatively attempted to link the sequence to basically
08:44everything imaginable, from in-game coordinates to classical music, but to date have only come
08:48up empty-handed. Though the recent next-gen update for The Witcher 3 did include a new secret which
08:53had some connections to FF06B5, it seemingly hasn't gotten fans any closer to figuring out
08:58what it actually means.
09:001. The Mount Chiliad Mystery – Grand Theft Auto 5
09:03And finally, we come to what is surely the most agonizing unsolved mystery in the history of
09:08video games, Grand Theft Auto 5's Mount Chiliad. And much like Cyberpunk's easter egg, Mount Chiliad
09:13even has its own very active subreddit. And as for the mystery itself, well, players who
09:17reach the cable car station atop the mountain will find a bizarre, distinctive mural on the
09:22wall, a map of Mount Chiliad filled with strange symbols of a UFO, a cracked egg, and a man wearing
09:27a jetpack, while a large, eye-like object is mounted at the very top of the mountain.
09:31Ever since the mural was discovered shortly after the game's 2013 release, fans have agonized over
09:36its true meaning and what figuring it out could possibly reveal. Some have rather optimistically
09:41theorized that it might unlock a demo for Grand Theft Auto 6 one day, while others simply believe
09:45it outlines the conditions for achieving 100% completion. Doing so will cause UFOs to appear
09:50over Mount Chiliad. And yet, the theories are myriad enough that there's no real consensus
09:54on what the mural relates to. It's absolutely worth considering that Rockstar might have included
09:59the easter egg simply to troll players, and it may be nothing more than a piece of weird art,
10:03or it may even relate to cut content from the final game. Needless to say, it'll be interesting
10:07to see whether or not GTA 6 can rustle up a mystery this singularly compelling when it
10:11eventually releases. Which will be someday. And there we go my friends,
10:15those were 10 video game easter eggs that are still undiscovered. Hope you enjoyed that and
10:18let me know what you thought about it down in the comments section below. As always I've been
10:22Jules, you can go follow me over on the social medias where it's at RetroJ but the O is a zero
10:26for most things, and I hope that you go over to the Future Games Show or FGS to go check out my
10:31other daily gaming content. Hope to see you over there. But before I go, I just want to say one
10:34thing. Hope you're treating yourself well my friend, with love and respect because you deserve
10:38the bloody best things in life alright? And do not let anything or anyone else tell you otherwise.
10:42You are a massive ledge and I will speak to you soon.
