00:00Moana 2 is reaching demigod status after shattering record after record over the
00:11Thanksgiving holiday. The Walt Disney Animation sequel sailed into history with a Thanksgiving
00:16haul of $221 million, breaking numerous records, including the biggest five-day opening of all time,
00:23the biggest Thanksgiving day gross of all time, biggest opening day for a Walt Disney Animation
00:28title, and the second biggest worldwide launch of the year so far behind fellow Disney pick
00:33Deadpool and Wolverine, among other milestones. Heading into the holiday, Walt Disney Animation's
00:38sequel was tracking to open to an already huge $125 million to $135 million for the long five-day
00:46weekend, but far surpassed those numbers. Overseas, Moana 2 started off with $165.3 million for a
00:53global bow of $386.3 million, after opening number one everywhere save for China. Moana's
01:00journey to becoming a franchise truly is an underdog victory. The original 2016 movie was
01:06a solid but not spectacular performer, and the sequel was originally developed as a Disney Plus
01:11series. That is, until the 2016 pick transformed into an enduring cultural phenomenon among kids
01:17and became the most-streamed movie across all platforms in 2023, according to Nielsen. The
01:23sequel follows the young heroine as she embarks on an unexpected adventure in long-lost waters
01:28after receiving a call from her ancestors. Maui, of course, shows up as well.
01:33I'll be back. I promise.
