Payne and Pendergast give their first reaction to the Texans' 23-20 win over the Jaguars.
Transcript
00:00Well, of course, the Texans 23 to 20 victors yesterday over the Jacksonville Jaguars in
00:06Jacksonville. They built a 23 to six lead in the fourth quarter and the Jags clawed
00:11their way back into the game. Uh, but, but they can check two boxes. The Texans this
00:17morning, Seth Payne, they won the football game and they scored not one, but two touchdowns
00:23in the second half to do. So I didn't know you were allowed to do that, man. They scored
00:27ladies first started wearing bikinis. You're like, Whoa, I like it. But is this even, I got
00:32to talk to my pastor about this. Love me a little Dalton Schultz wide open on the right side.
00:38Nothing. My pastor loves more than getting 38 text. Hey, should I, uh, is it okay for me to
00:44be aroused by the Texans scoring two second half touchdowns on offense? But it's a fair
00:48question to ask, man. It's all about your soul. You know, I mean, they don't teach you this in
00:52seminary. Uh, so I got to stick and move, man. This is where, and we'll dig into this game
00:57because there was, there was, there was, you know, there was plenty to like, and there was
01:00plenty to, to, to, uh, to not like, and there was Aziz Al Shire doing his thing out there
01:06yesterday, which is going to get, I would imagine a ton of attention today. It is his thing too,
01:10isn't it? Yeah. I mean, it's just, that's the, that's the thing that makes discussion about
01:15that play. We'll get into it. I know. Uh, so difficult is it as he's, he's got a, he's got
01:21Yeah, he does this season. He has, he had priors when he was in San Francisco and Tennessee,
01:25but even just this season, he does, we'll, we'll get into, we'll get into his ease.
01:30What that may have meant to this game. Ultimately, it probably meant nothing. I can't imagine Trevor
01:33Lawrence playing any better than Mack Jones did in the fourth quarter. It was the best thing that
01:37happened to the Jaguars yesterday. It was Trevor Lawrence getting knocked out. I don't know why
01:40they were so upset about it. Exactly. Jones was on fire. He was the rookie of the year.
01:44Mack Jones. He was, he was, he was really, Trevor Lawrence sucked. He was going to throw
01:48five picks. He was lucky. He hadn't already thrown three. He was. Yeah, no, no, no question.
01:53Here's where I'm at with this game yesterday, Seth. Is it, um, I woke up this morning,
01:58got into my truck, got ready to drive through the station. And I said, man,
02:02I am glad they didn't lose yesterday. Like what would this, it wasn't a great win. It was a win.
02:08You needed it because the Colts last second heroics in new England and they
02:13beat the Patriots yesterday. So it's all these teams mirror each other, man,
02:17whatever the one team does each week team is like, it's been this way literally since
02:23they played the Colts in week eight, it's been a two game lead with the tiebreaker.
02:28And so you needed to win this yesterday, one for the standings, but two, I can't imagine sitting
02:33around for two weeks, stewing over consecutive losses to the Titans and the Jags. So I am
02:40thankful in the spirit of Thanksgiving, which we just finished up. I am thankful that they won
02:45just based on the psyche of me, you, and everybody else in Houston for the next couple of
02:50weeks. I also, you know what I resolved this morning too. I'm going to try real hard since
02:55we only have a two hour show today to not continually point out how bad the Jaguars
03:00defense actually is. So there's that there's that I'm, I'm just trying to, I'm trying to
03:05take the pause. Hey, the whole old line got game balls because the Texans eventually figured out
03:10that trying to run past the offensive tackles as fast as possible, uh, was, uh, the best route
03:17for Joe. If I can just get outside the offensive line, we're going to be all right. Yeah. Yeah.
03:23Let's just run around the end ASAP. But, um, no, there were some positive developments,
03:28especially the fact that they got better as the game went on. I think offensively, the fact that
03:32really, you know, D'Amico had said that the offensive line played great the whole game.
03:36I disagree in the first half. It was classic Texans offensive line. Yeah. In the second half,
03:41they got it going. And, uh, Joe Mixon sets a record for what most consecutive hundred yard
03:47games on the road in which you score a touchdown. That's it. Yeah, that's exactly it. You nailed it.
03:53Yeah. So nervous when you saw me try to handle stats first, do you, you're the one who told me
03:58to get nervous when you handle, let me not look stats up during the segment. I had that one in
04:03my brain. You had it in your holster ready to go first, first, first one to do that since 1970,
04:09I think is what I saw. It wasn't a record. It wasn't a record, but he's the first one to do
04:13that since 1970. I think the, the, to me, the Joe Mixon number, that's almost the stranger one.
04:19He leads the league in hundred yard games this year. He's got the strangest thing in the world
04:23that nobody is really going to pay attention to because nobody's paying attention to the Texans
04:27right now. But he, the, what people will fail to recognize and realize is that that was done
04:34with so little help from the offensive line. I mean, there is so many, just Joe Mixon joints
04:41it's created by him with minimal help here and there a smattering, uh, let yesterday,
04:47they actually, he actually got genuine blocking in the second, the second half, the 30 yard run,
04:53the kind of busted the dam a little bit in the run game that set up the very next play
04:57seven yard, right? Like same run. It just, it was down near the goal line to that left side.
05:02So yeah, second half, second half was second. It was good to score in the second half, man,
05:07two touchdowns in the second half. I was, I'm not going to lie. I was a little nervous when it was
05:11six, three at halftime. I'm like, okay, by, by the pattern that they've established in the second
05:18half of football games, if they're going to win this game, the final score is going to be six to
05:22three, right? Yeah. It got boy. And right up, I had, uh, I had posted this on the series in
05:29which Trevor Lawrence got hurt, uh, right before he got hurt. I said, this, this game is rocketing
05:35towards the second half way faster than I'm comfortable with. Yeah. Uh, because we know
05:39what's been going on in the end event, Trevor Lawrence got hurt. And then basically I,
05:44there were like 15 injuries after that. And it turned into a painstakingly slow game.
05:47It was a slow game. Clinton. I got in here for the post game show and we didn't come on the air
05:52to like three 50, you know, usually we're on the air by like three 25 Clint's like chief chief.
05:58Was that a long game? Exactly. Like he didn't go to overtime. Was that a long game? I'm like,
06:02yeah, dude. Like the whole Aziz thing took like 15 minutes to hash out. I knew it was going to be a
06:07shorter post game show while the whole Aziz cure fuffle was going on out there. And then it got
06:12fun after that. I, you know, even though the Texans got the brunt of it, they, they allowed
06:16a field goal on that drive, but the Jaguars basically said, all right, we're just going to
06:20run. We're going to run the ball right down your throat. And I kind of thought, Ooh, this is grudge.
06:26You know, this is a, an angry Jaguars team versus a Texans defense. But then lo and behold,
06:32Peterson realized was like, Hey, Mac Jones ain't a complete flop. Right. Let's just go. Oh. And by
06:36the way, they don't have Aziz Elshire, which conveniently got rid of our crappy quarterback
06:41who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn yesterday. So let's just chop. Let's chop up
06:46this Texans defense over the middle where they're, where they're down a linebacker and
06:51Mac Jones looked like rookie Mac Jones when, which he was rookie of the year. Did yesterday
06:58make you more confident, less confident, or you at the same level of confidence
07:03that the Texans are equipped to handle the three games in 11 days coming out of the bi-week
07:11same confidence. And it wasn't like I was optimistic about it before me.
07:15Okay. You and I are on the same page. A lot of the stuff that like the stuff that was
07:20working for the Jaguars in the run game was a lot of the same stuff they were trying versus
07:24the Titans. They were just getting physically manhandled versus the Titans. So I think
07:28it really, it was good. It was good. I'm not, it was, it's good that they did that versus a bad
07:33defense. It's progress in a lot of regards what they did in the second half, because I thought
07:38the offensive linemen weren't making mental errors or just falling on their faces. But it doesn't
07:42make me feel more confident than the way face a genuinely good run defense that they're going
07:46to average more than two yards. Yeah. And the past protection to like, okay, the past protection was
07:50better. I thought the past protection was, was okay in the first half, even when they were only
07:55scoring six points, like CJ got sacked at the end of the first drive, he got sacked on the second
08:01drive and then he didn't get sacked the rest, the rest of the day. And I thought I'd look,
08:06I thought the protection was pretty good. I thought there were a lot of times where CJ was
08:09holding the ball a really long time back. I don't know what was going on.
08:12We weren't in the stadium. We were watching it on TV. So we couldn't see what was going
08:16on downfield. If the coverage was really good. I have no idea. The one play where the two plays
08:21there were, and he was holding onto the ball a long time. The one play when it ended up being
08:26an under throw to tank Dell and should have been an interference call, it wasn't called,
08:31but he had to wait for that. And by the time he had to step up, I, you know,
08:36his deep ball hasn't been the same this year, but that one, I thought it was a good job of
08:40hanging in the pocket in a muddy pocket and getting rid and making the right decision.
08:44And honestly should have drawn the DPI, which is just as good as a deep strike. So better actually.
08:51So there was that, but then the other play, when he did have Schultz wide open in the flat and he
08:57tried to escape the pocket, I went back to remember the situation. Yeah, they were, they were in like
09:0460 yard field goal range right there. It was third and long, but like hanging on,
09:10like hitting Schultz in the flat there could have gotten them into field goal.
09:13Yeah. It was certain law. Like that's, that's one of the times where I feel like CJ probably
09:17should have gotten rid of the ball better. So it's still not perfect, but I, I don't think
09:21he looks flustered or anything. I actually feel like I'm with you. I'm same confidence level.
09:26There's nothing about that win yesterday that makes me think Eureka, they figured it out.
09:30You know, they, yeah, they scored in the second half. They just decided to not score in the first
09:34half of this game and say, they just flipped it around for this game. I do think with CJ,
09:39there were some throws in that game where I'm like, okay, he's seeing it go through the hoop.
09:44You know what I mean? Like shooter side, you see, CJ always compares himself to Steph Curry.
09:47And sometimes the shooters, they need to see the ball. If they're in a slump,
09:50they need to see ranked himself as a top five NBA player. Yes, he did.
09:55Podcast top five shooting guard on the, in the, on the, uh, the, the million dollars worth of
10:00game podcast. But I think he had some throws yesterday to me that felt like, okay, that looks
10:04like the old CJ right there that, you know, he hung in, you know, Dalton, the touchdown to Dalton,
10:09like, okay, Dalton, that, that, that play breaks down. You know, there were times over the last
10:14several weeks where CJ had guys open like that and he wasn't seeing them so that he at least found
10:18Dalton. We had Dalton on the post game show. He called that a training camp play. He's like,
10:22yeah, it just kind of broke down and I was just sort of standing there. I mean,
10:26yeah, that's stuff that happens. Yeah. So that's where the Jaguars are as a defense.
10:31We were playing against the twos and a rookie, somebody or other called it the
10:36vintage stuff that I did like seeing. I thought the CJs touch and tie the outs, including that
10:42one to Nico Collins, that classic toe tapper data, Nico, right. At first in real time,
10:47it doesn't look like a catch. And then it's emphatically a catch. He had a nice out,
10:52or I don't care. I remember it was an out, but it was to the side, to the right sideline,
10:55to tank Dell in the third quarter. Some of the on rhythm kind of almost no look passes to Nico
11:02over the middle. We did have a Nico Collins reception called back to penalty early in the
11:07game. First drive, Kate Stover lined up. We got it out of the way and it wasn't a touchdown. I know
11:13that play died. So deeper Nico Collins strikes could live. Now it did lead to a, because I wrote
11:19this down an incompletion on the next play on second and long, a sack of CJ Stroud and then a
11:25punt. So it did short, like the drive got short circuited, but it didn't negate a touchdown that
11:30time. At least that was the most frustrating part of yesterday early on was man, the administrative
11:35errors, these flags. It's one thing. If you get a holding penalty or something like that,
11:39but these administrative errors early, I'm like, Oh no, here we go again. But they cleaned it up.
11:43They did three penalties on the deck. They played a clean game. Seth that Kate Stover penalty led me
11:48to get this separate piece of paper out from my Pender notes where I wrote game killing, stupid
11:53bleep the Texans do today. And the list was not that long. I was, you had a separate file separate
12:00file so that we, cause I, so I wouldn't have to sift through my notes to find it. I get,
12:03I put a separate sub note here of just like the stupid dumb stuff, like all the stuff from the
12:10Titans game. You know what I mean? You're right. Yeah. I was just thinking of like,
12:13when I added an extra tab to a, to an Excel doc, which I will never use again.
12:18Yeah. That's what you did. That's what I did. It's a long list. Good job.
