The Russian defence ministry claim comes as Vladimir Putin approved budget plans, raising 2025 military spending to record levels as Moscow seeks to prevail in the war in Ukraine.

00:00Russia says it's captured two towns in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine,
00:05just as President Vladimir Putin approved plans to raise military spending to its highest level yet,
00:11a third of the national budget.
00:13According to the Ministry of Defence,
00:15its servicemen also hit the infrastructure of Ukrainian airfields, drone assembly shops and warehouses.
00:21Ukraine's air force confirmed the attacks,
00:24saying Russia launched 78 drones overnight from the cities of Kursk, Orel and Bryansk.
00:29The air force also said it jammed about 32 of the drones,
00:33whilst regional authorities said at least 11 civilians were killed from the Russian strikes.
00:38Meanwhile, authorities in the Kherson region say three people were killed in a Russian strike there.
00:44It's one of four regions that Moscow illegally annexed in September 2022,
00:49but hasn't been able to completely re-occupy.
00:52A Ukrainian counter-offensive recaptured western areas of the Kherson region,
00:57including the regional capital, also called Kherson, nine months later.
