00:00Sweden's Prime Minister asks China to cooperate with a probe to determine how two data cables
00:06under the Baltic Sea were damaged.
00:10Euronews caught up with seven-time Formula One winner Lewis Hamilton ahead of this weekend's
00:15Qatar Grand Prix.
00:26Hezbollah claimed the ceasefire with Hezbollah earlier this week was breached, as Lebanon
00:30said Israeli tanks attacked areas in the country's south, threatening a truce which had only
00:36just begun.
00:38At least two people were wounded by Israeli fire in southern Lebanon, according to state
00:43media.
00:46Israeli officials said in a statement that suspects had arrived to several areas in southern
00:50Lebanon, breaching the ceasefire terms.
00:54They said the IDF opened fire towards them and would actively enforce violations of the
00:59ceasefire agreement.
01:01A long-negotiated ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect on Wednesday, intending
01:07to allow people from both sides of the conflict to return home after 14 months of fighting.
01:15The agreement comprises an initial two-month ceasefire during which Hezbollah would withdraw
01:20north and Israeli forces return to their side of the border.
01:26Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers would then patrol the buffer zone.
01:35Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to strike Ukrainian capital Kiev with recently
01:40unveiled Oreshnik missiles, as he praised US President-elect Donald Trump as quite clever
01:47and experienced.
01:49He made the comments during a news conference on the sidelines of a security summit alliance
01:54of former Soviet nations in Kazakhstan.
02:19While at the summit, Russia's leader also praised incoming US President-elect Donald
02:33Trump.
03:00Moscow has launched intensifying attacks against Ukraine's energy infrastructure recently,
03:06with Trump's victory casting uncertainty over the future of Ukraine.
03:14Winter conditions get harsher for Ukrainians as Russia intensifies its attacks on the country's
03:19energy infrastructure.
03:21Early Thursday morning, scores of missiles and drones launched across the entire country
03:24targeting the energy grid and leaving more than one million Ukrainians without electricity.
03:30Ukrainian air defence reported that 176 missiles and drones out of 188 have been intercepted.
03:37Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the attacks were a response to Ukraine's attacks
03:41with UK and US weapons last week.
03:43However, Moscow has been targeting the energy grid every winter since the invasion began.
03:49Over 280,000 households in the northwestern Rivne region were without electricity because
03:54of the attack.
03:55There were also interruptions to water supplies in affected areas.
03:59One of the strikes in the Odessa region killed two and injured three, including a 16-year-old boy.
04:24Also in the Volvin region, 215,000 households lost electricity.
04:37All critical infrastructure that lost power has been switched to generators.
04:47Thousands of Georgians have protested outside the parliament in Tbilisi after Prime Minister
04:51Irakli Kabakidze announced a suspension in the country's EU accession bid.
04:57There were clashes between police and protesters, with officers using water cannons and deploying
05:03right teams to quell the unrest.
05:05Kabakidze's decision to stop accession talks until 2028 came just hours after the European
05:12Parliament adopted a resolution rejecting the country's election results, citing major
05:18irregularities.
05:19But the people of Georgia are determined to continue making their voices heard until their
05:24demands are met.
05:36The European Parliament said the country should rerun its election under international supervision
05:41within a year.
05:43The bloc also announced a cut in budgetary support to Georgia, a measure lawmakers say
05:48could be detrimental to the country.
05:51They will not receive any funding from EU, which means that they will block 100 million
05:57devoted to Georgian civil society and media.
06:00They're going to suffocate whatever pockets of freedom are left in this country.
06:05Kabakidze accuses Brussels of blackmail and says his government will work to implement
06:09the necessary reforms to resume accession talks.
06:13He said that by 2028, Georgia will be the most prepared country among all candidates
06:19to join the bloc in the year 2030.
06:27Sweden has formally asked China to cooperate with an investigation into the suspected sabotage
06:32of two data cables running under the Baltic Sea.
06:36The fiber optic cables, one running from Finland to Germany and the other from Lithuania to
06:40Sweden were damaged last week in an area where the Chinese bulk carrier Ipeng-3 had
06:46been seen.
06:47With this request, obviously we think it's extremely important to find out exactly what
06:54happened and of course we expect also China to comply with the request we have sent China.
07:01The Ipeng-3 is currently anchored in international waters between Sweden and Denmark, where it's
07:07being monitored by several vessels, including those belonging to the Danish Navy.
07:12The Wall Street Journal reported that investigators suspect the Ipeng-3 of deliberately severing
07:17the fiber optic cables by dragging its anchor along the seabed.
07:22Authorities in Beijing said they had no information about the ship and denied any responsibility.
07:37Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said this wasn't the first time suspected sabotage had
07:42happened in the Baltic Sea.
07:44The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which carried gas from Russia to Germany, were both damaged
07:50in explosions in 2022.
07:53And in 2023, the Baltic Connector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia was seriously
07:59damaged.
08:04British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the government will overhaul the immigration
08:08system after new data showed arrivals to the country had hit a record high.
08:13Figures released by the Office for National Statistics put net migration at more than
08:18900,000 in the year to June 2023.
08:22Starmer blamed those numbers on the previous Conservative government.
08:26Because a failure on this scale isn't just bad luck, it isn't a global trend or taking
08:34your eye off the ball. No, this is a different order of failure. This happened by design
08:43not accident. Policies were reformed deliberately to liberalise immigration. Brexit was used
08:51for that purpose, to turn Britain into a one nation experiment in open borders.
08:59Starmer said his government plans to overhaul the points-based immigration system brought
09:04in by the Conservatives in 2021 after Brexit.
09:08That system gives applicants points for specific skills and qualifications and those who don't
09:14meet the threshold aren't granted a visa.
09:17Immigration is a divisive topic in the UK, with many voters concerned about the strain
09:21on public services caused by a large influx of people.
09:25But some sectors, including healthcare, argue they'd be unable to function without staff
09:30brought in from abroad.
09:37Portugal's government announced plans to invest 20 million euros in 600 new vehicles for the
09:42country's police force and national guard.
09:46Portugal's Prime Minister said the extra investment was necessary and stated that he wanted to
09:51value the careers of public administration employees, especially security forces.
09:58However, Portugal's national police union said the investment was insufficient and below
10:04requirements.
10:06The union president said some Portuguese police equipment is in varying states of decay and
10:12without investment, the police grind to a halt.
10:18Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most career Formula One race wins and is widely
10:23considered the greatest driver in motorsport history.
10:26The British driver shocked the racing world when he said he would suit up for Ferrari
10:31in 2025, calling it one of the hardest decisions he's ever had to make.
10:35Euronews caught up with Hamilton before his last race with Mercedes.
10:40Formula One revs up this weekend for the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix.
10:44Twenty of the world's best drivers will line up on the starting grid at the newly upgraded
10:48Lucille International Circuit.
10:50All eyes will be on Lewis Hamilton as he heads into his final lap with Mercedes, trading
10:55in his silver arrows for the iconic red of Ferrari.
11:02I think some of the biggest hurdles are probably second guessing yourself, having doubts of
11:09whether or not you can do something when things get tough.
11:13So self-belief I think has been one of the most important things for me is continue to
11:18have self-belief.
11:19This is beautiful, wow.
11:26Hamilton also recently fulfilled one of his childhood dreams.
11:30He landed in the cockpit of a high-performance training jet, where he participated in flight
11:35training for astronauts.
11:38Hamilton will wear a unique race suit featuring patches that say Space Mission and is starting
11:42number 44 this weekend at the Lucille International Circuit.
