00:00I am a shield of Rosaria, and I will do my duty.
00:10Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're looking at the best boss in every mainline Final Fantasy
00:16game.
00:17Our picks were chosen based on a combination of balance difficulty, as well as design and
00:21impact.
00:22And just a heads up, some spoilers lie ahead.
00:30Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:35the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:39Lich – Final Fantasy
00:44The first of the four elemental fiends the Warriors of Light must face, Lich is also
00:49undoubtedly the coolest in terms of design.
00:52Found at the bottom of the Cavern of Earth, Lich is the first true challenge of the original
00:57Final Fantasy.
00:58His undead nature makes him weak to Dia and fire attacks, so strategize accordingly.
01:04Just watch out for his equally powerful magic attacks.
01:07Casting Null Spells will cut this damage in half.
01:10Depending on which version of the game you're playing, you may have access to other helpful
01:14items, like the Elemental Curtains from the 20th Anniversary and Dawn of Souls additions.
01:20He will, however, be a lot stronger the second time around though.
01:30Emperor – Final Fantasy II
01:38Our first final boss on the list, the last Emperor encounter in Square's sophomore
01:43outing is definitely the most badass in the game.
01:46Firion and friends defeat and kill him earlier on, sending him to hell.
01:51Unluckily for them, however, is that he takes it over.
01:54Yeah, so much for all that grinding.
01:57This final fight is significantly tougher, and focusing on evasiveness is highly recommended
02:03here.
02:04His Flare 16 attack hits the whole party for massive damage, so be sure to have a white
02:09mage at the ready.
02:11He also sports the most menacing and imposing design in the game, making him an easy pick
02:17for the best boss.
02:24Cloud of Darkness – Final Fantasy III
02:32There are countless iterations of Final Fantasy III out there, from the Nintendo DS remake
02:37to the recent Pixel remaster, but one thing remains consistent.
02:42The final boss, Cloud of Darkness, is far and away the best fight in all versions.
02:48Her awesome design coupled with the battle music are a recipe for fun and is challenging
02:53to boot.
02:54Her Flare wave attack can decimate your party, so as always, make sure you have a white mage
03:00ready to go.
03:01To deal damage, the best strategy here is to load up on shurikens and tear her to shreds
03:07with as many ninjas as you can spare.
03:09With enough time, you'll beat the game and get to watch that sweet, sweet ending.
03:19Dark Knight Cecil – Final Fantasy IV
03:27Just like Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy IV, or Final Fantasy II for the American old,
03:32is one of the most widely available entries in the series thanks in part to its DS remake.
03:37In any case, the obvious pick here is Dark Knight Cecil.
03:42Midway through the story, troubled protagonist Cecil must bid farewell to his bloodstained
03:46past, atop the peak of Mount Ordeals, emerging victorious with new duds and abilities as
03:52a paladin.
03:53While this fight isn't necessarily the most difficult, it's a crucial turning point
03:58in the game's narrative, and a moment of powerful character development for our hero.
04:02Oh, and the battle music?
04:04Yeah, awesome.
04:06Play this game.
04:11Gilgamesh – Final Fantasy V
04:17A reoccurring comic relief character throughout many of the Final Fantasy games, Gilgamesh's
04:23appearance in the fifth installment is both his best, and the game's most entertaining
04:27boss battle.
04:28Don't let his cool design fool you.
04:31Hilariously, the dude is a pushover and talks a big game that he can't back up.
04:36Bartz and company encounter him a total of six times throughout the game, as he's the
04:41right hand of the main antagonist, Exdeath, often imprisoning you or acting as a roadblock.
04:47None of his encounters are terribly difficult, but we always love hearing his little quips
04:52and one-liners.
04:54If you're lucky enough with the Thief class, you can steal pieces of the Genji armor from
04:59Gilgamesh during each of your interactions with him, a must-have for strong builds.
05:05Phantom Train – Final Fantasy VI
05:13If you thought the Gilgamesh fights were goofy, allow us to introduce the Phantom Train.
05:18What starts out as a somber and macabre moment for one of our protagonists, Cyan, becomes
05:23just as off-the-walls as our previous entry.
05:26Yep, you fight an actual choo-choo train.
05:29Final Fantasy VI is widely regarded as one of the most iconic entries in the entire series,
05:34and its bosses are a big contributor to that.
05:37One of the most well-known memes associated with this fight is Sabine's ability to suplex
05:42the train.
05:43Yeah, like the wrestling move.
05:45If it sounds funny, wait till you see it in action.
05:49Additionally, if you are looking to speedrun the game, the Phantom Train is classified
05:54as undead, so one Phoenix down should do the trick.
05:58Safer Sephiroth – Final Fantasy VII
06:04It was really tough to pick from Final Fantasy VII's roster of awesome bosses for this
06:13list.
06:14We were leaning towards the weapons, but they didn't seem nearly as iconic as the final
06:18encounter with the main antagonist, Sephiroth.
06:21Here, the villain takes his legendary one-winged angel form, and the battle theme of the same
06:26name rages on in the background as you fight for the fate of the planet.
06:30The challenge is pretty brutal, so bringing your strongest materia and equipment is paramount
06:36if you want to come out on top.
06:38If 2024's Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is anything to go off, the third entry of the remake trilogy
06:44will do this fight justice, and then some.
06:47Oh, and this form is also Sephiroth's final smash in his appearance in Super Smash Bros.
06:52Ultimate, so that's pretty cool too.
07:02Omega Weapon – Final Fantasy VIII
07:09We all know the main antagonist, Ultimecia, is a great villain, and her final battle at
07:15the end of Final Fantasy VIII is iconic, but there's another baddie that takes the
07:20cake here.
07:21Omega Weapon, found hidden within Ultimecia's castle, brings the heat in both challenge
07:26and cool design.
07:27The weird centaur-like hybrid creature boasts an insane amount of HP, weighing in at just
07:33over a million, and has some devastating attacks that can take out the entire party.
07:39Should you overcome this beast, the game congratulates you by unlocking the Proof of Omega, a sort
07:45of easter egg in the help section of the menus.
07:48Necron – Final Fantasy IX
07:57Final Fantasy IX was another difficult one for us, as the game has so many awesome and
08:02unique bosses.
08:03From the Black Walls to the enigmatic Ozma, the great picks are endless.
08:08And while not quite as formidable as the latter, the game's final boss is still a force to
08:13be reckoned with.
08:14After being weakened by Trance Kuja's Ultima spell, the party must tussle with the terrifying,
08:20biblically accurate, angel-looking monster that is Necron.
08:23Beware of his powerful magic attacks, and try using the Dispel ability to remove his
08:28buffs.
08:29Take him out, and you're treated to a very satisfying ending that wraps up all the characters'
08:39stories.
08:44Evrae – Final Fantasy X
08:52At the midpoint of Final Fantasy X, the giant guardian dragon Evrae descends upon the Fahrenheit
08:57airship as the party attempts to reach Bevo.
09:00A pretty unique boss battle, you'll have to use the environment and parts of the ship
09:04to take it out.
09:06Strategizing your movements and paying attention to turn order is crucial, as you'll have
09:11to command the ship to get close or move away.
09:13His Poison Breath attack hits like a truck, so make sure to kit out your party accordingly
09:18beforehand.
09:19You'll also evade the attack if you move the ship away.
09:23It's best to use ranged attacks here, like Lulu's Black Magic or Wakka's attack, and
09:28the airship can even shoot its cannons at the beast.
09:36The Archangels – Final Fantasy XI
09:51We'll admit we're cheating a little bit here.
09:53The Archangels, also known as the Crystal Warriors, are a set of five bosses you can
09:59fight in Final Fantasy XI, Square Enix's first MMORPG attempt.
10:04Part of the Rise of Zeal art expansion, they represent each of the game's elven virtues,
10:10and their designs are certifiably badass.
10:13You can fight them all individually or test your skill against all five at once, but be
10:19warned, they'll use devastating attacks using class abilities you're familiar with.
10:24Upon defeating each one, you'll unlock their trusts, allowing you to summon them in battle.
10:30Definitely worth the grind.
10:32Yasmat – Final Fantasy XII
10:41While we didn't want to pick all of the hardest bosses for this list, it isn't our
10:45fault Final Fantasy XII's Yasmat also happens to be the coolest in the game.
10:50Packing a whopping 50 million health, the final elite mark is not only an imposing beast
10:57from a gameplay perspective, but its size is just as intimidating.
11:01It takes up the entire screen.
11:03Its history as the most powerful Elder Dragon in existence is clear in its design, and the
11:08fight itself will require a lot of grinding.
11:12Once you get it to half health, the amount of damage it takes is reduced by one third,
11:17requiring even more effort.
11:20That's not to mention its ultra-powerful attacks, which should be obvious given everything
11:25else we just said.
11:27Good luck!
11:28Anima – Final Fantasy XIII
11:39The first of Final Fantasy XIII's pulseful seed that Lightning and company come up against,
11:44Anima is definitely the coolest.
11:46While not really taking inspiration from the original undead look from Final Fantasy X,
11:51its design is still unmatched.
11:53You'll be facing a huge, terrifying cyborg... thing, which is honestly just as awesome.
11:59It attacks using the two manipulators on either side, making dodging a bit of a challenge.
12:05Still, destroying them both before attacking Anima's main body will allow you to finish
12:10it off in no time.
12:11While it isn't that hard of a fight, it's still a fun one.
12:15Endsinger – Final Fantasy XIV – A Realm Reborn
12:32Comprised of two forms, the Endwalker expansion's final boss, the Endsinger, is the hit MMO's
12:39best.
12:40Taking the shape of a giant goddess-like figure, the Endsinger is an imposing force to be reckoned
12:45with.
12:46The fight takes place on the back of Shiryu on a round arena, so maneuvering strategically
12:51is of utmost importance to survive and emerge victorious.
12:55A full party is, of course, recommended, with each player filling each role to their highest
13:01ability.
13:02But the Endsinger still poses a significant challenge.
13:06Oh, and the battle music is incredible.
13:0910 out of 10.
13:16Leviathan – Final Fantasy XV
13:26In terms of spectacle, the fight against Leviathan in Final Fantasy XV is unmatched compared
13:32to the rest.
13:33Okay, yes, the fight against the literally mountain-sized Adamantoise is epic, but Leviathan
13:39has important story implications, so it wins the spot.
13:43Anyway, the lead-up to the fight is awesome, with Noctis cutting his way through Imperial
13:49soldiers and flying around the city with Prompto, all with the imposing figure of Leviathan
13:54in the background looming.
13:56Feeling like something straight out of Shadow of the Colossus, the sheer spectacle of Leviathan
14:01in Shadow of the Colossus, the sheer scale of this battle is one of the most impressive
14:05in any Final Fantasy game.
14:16Bahamut – Final Fantasy XVI
14:18If you've played Final Fantasy XVI, you know that any icon battle from the game would
14:24fit nicely onto this list.
14:26All of them are awe-inspiring, kaiju-esque battles, but the fight against Bahamut is
14:32probably the best in terms of badass factor.
14:35Preceded by a gut-wrenching and superbly acted cutscene between protagonist Clyde and the
14:40protagonist Clyde and his mother Annabella, the battle itself sees the hero take the form
14:44of Ifrit, and face the legendary dragon and franchise staple Bahamut.
14:49Accompanied by his brother Joshua and his icon Phoenix, the encounter is more than just
14:54a typical boss battle.
14:56It's an impactful, emotional, playable cutscene that is one of the game's best moments.
