Science and Technology week opens in Mindanao for the first time  Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum, Cagayan de Oro Vice Mayor Jocelyn Rodriguez and Misamis Oriental Gov. Peter Unabia lead the opening of the 2024 National Science and Technology Week of the Department of Science and Technology at the Limketkai Mall in Cagayan de Oro City on Nov. 27 2024.  A first in Mindanao, the NSTW showcases the science and technology programs of the DOST. In a press briefing, Solidum highlighted the importance of Science and Technology in entrepreneurship through the creation of innovation hubs in the country. 00:31DOST, of course, the new innovation, the technology, we are supporting.

00:37Especially now, what the Secretary is mentioning right now.

00:42But I'm more into innovation, I'm into more green.

00:45I have an ordinance to plant a million trees.

00:49I'm more into planting trees, environment preservation.

00:53So, of course, the Secretary is into that also.

00:57In our green environment.

01:01So what is your expectation with the NSDW that is right now here in Cagayan?

01:05Actually, right now, the Director-General, not the Director-General.

01:17They're more into technology and innovation.

01:21So not me.

01:22Sancho, how many innovation hubs have we planned for this year?

01:29And is this funded by 2025?

01:31Are you hopeful that at least we can increase the budget of our innovation hubs?

01:43Well, the plan as mentioned by our Secretary is to have at least one innovation hub per province.

01:49So we are looking at 80 innovation hubs all over the country.

01:53Aside from that, because there are phases of development.

01:58Aside from that, once we establish the agenda,

02:02we will have one center innovation hub in the regions.

02:08So 80 plus 16, that is about 96.

02:11Now, currently, when we have launched the innovation hub about two months ago in Region 6,

02:18we have already invested, initially, 4.8 million.

02:23And next year, we see that the investment will be higher.

02:28And triple and quadruple investment,

02:32because the instruction of the Secretary-General is to have this in all the provinces.

02:37And that's why we need to curate our innovation hubs

02:41depending on the needs of the province and depending on the needs of the regions.

02:46So 80 plus 16, that is 96.

02:49We hope that the 80 will be the next year.

02:53The regional will be for 2026.

02:57But is it funded until 2025? Or what is the source of funding for this?

03:01Well, there are a lot because we can already fund all the provincial and regional offices.

03:07Right now, the source of fund is under local GLA.

03:11But when we will, let's say, when we have established and it will be repurposed,

03:19we will fund it under our national GLA, under the office of the Secretary.

03:26So we're hoping that this will at least be funded by 2025 or 2026?

03:32We're sure that it will be funded in 2025.

03:35We're not sure yet because there is still a debate.

03:38There is still a debate.

03:39But, you know, it's there already.

03:41In 2026, for the big ones, we will repurpose it.

03:46It will be, of course, project proposal-driven.

03:49And we intend to submit it under the office of the Secretary for funding.
