00:00Let's join teammate Rafael Bandarel and Sports Memorabilia Collector Director or Dr. Michael Rico Messina
00:08in their review of the world of Philippine sports.
00:11History, nostalgia, and many more, all here in Treasures of the Game.
00:24Good morning teammates, and we're here in Treasures of the Game
00:28where we'll learn the story behind the things that gave life to our favorite moments in Philippine sports history.
00:37I'm Rafael Bandarel, your host, and I'm here with Dr. Michael Rico Messina,
00:42a doctor, sports memorabilia collector, and the founder of The Basket Vault Facebook group.
00:50Good morning, Doc.
00:52Good morning, Raf, to our teammates who are watching.
00:56Okay, so now, of course, it's still fresh, Doc, the historic win of our Guilas Filipinas against the New Zealand Tall Blacks
01:05here in Window 2 of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.
01:09Our teammates are so hyped right now because it's our first time in history to do that, Doc.
01:14For the past months, this year, the Guilas Filipinas made history, so it is a very good time to be a Guilas fan.
01:22First, we won the Asian Games again. After, I think, 62 years, we won the Asian Games again.
01:29Then, just recently, in Latvia, in the Olympic qualifying tournament, we won once in Latvia itself, in the Hoth Nation.
01:38And for the first time after several decades, we won in a European country.
01:43You're right, Doc. So, with that, we know that our Guilas Filipinas Men's National Basketball Team continues to make history,
01:51but let's go back to some of our favorite basketball teams.
01:56So, teammates, now, we have items that we will show you.
02:00And these are the memorabilia that our players used.
02:07We have souvenirs here that really came from the big moments and highlights of our team.
02:14Doc, what is our first item, Doc? Let's show it.
02:18So, here, during this particular tournament, during that year, we broke the Korean curse.
02:25Then, we placed second, I think, during this tournament in Iran.
02:30They call it, Doc, golden silver because it's a silver medal, but for us, it's a big thing because we qualified for the World Cup because of that victory.
02:41Yes, after several decades that we didn't qualify, finally, we were able to enter again.
02:46Correct, Doc.
02:47So, this book is the document of that journey of our Guilas Filipinas.
02:53The title of the book is, 11 Days in August, Guilas Filipinas and the Quest for Basketball Glory.
03:00This is the book that chronicles our journey to return to the World Cup.
03:06Then, the next thing that I will show, Sir Raph, we have a medal of Guilas Filipinas.
03:13The silver medal.
03:14The silver medal.
03:16Very nice.
03:16If we go back to that game, versus South Korea, Doc, what do you remember the most? What stood out to you?
03:24What I remember was, Raph, the three-pointers of Ronny Dele.
03:29Correct.
03:29And Jimmy Alapagbe.
03:31So, that was the one that set us on fire during the Korean run back then.
03:36I also remember the emotion of our fans when, finally, we won in Korea.
03:42I saw the people in the stadium watching and crying.
03:47Actually, we were also watching TV at home.
03:50We were also crying.
03:52There was a lot of emotion going on during that particular win.
03:56Okay, so our next item, let's fast forward to 2013.
04:02So, our naturalized player now, Justin Brownlee.
04:08If we remember, in February of 2023, JB made his debut as a member of Guilas Filipinas against Team Lebanon.
04:19In the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
04:21I think it was in Asia.
04:22Asia Qualifiers, I think.
04:23Asia Qualifiers, correct.
04:25So, this is what we will share with our teammates.
04:29So, this is the game-worn shoes of Justin Brownlee that he wore during his Guilas debut.
04:38There's a signature.
04:39There's a signature and an inscription of Justin Brownlee.
04:42It says, First Guilas Game 2023, Puso.
04:46Then, there's his number and the signature, number 32, Justin Brownlee.
04:51And it was a non-bearing game, but it's still very important because,
04:55for the first time, we can see how Justin Brownlee will fit in with the rest of the national team players.
05:03So, it's a feeling-out game of JB with our locals in Guilas.
05:10And we can see from that particular game until now,
05:14the evolution of our Guilas has been huge with regards to gelling together, playing together as a team.
05:24So, these items are the start of the integration of Justin Brownlee with our Guilas national team.
05:31So, it's the start of the Justin Brownlee era of Guilas Pilipinas.
05:37All right, Doc. What's next on our list, Doc?
05:40Last year, our FIBA World Cup tournament was held here, right?
05:45Then, one of our games is against Italy.
05:49Yes.
05:49So, this pair of shoes are those worn by Scotty Thompson during that Italy game.
05:58So, I checked on the internet, on the pictures, if this is the pair that was worn.
06:06So, it was also verified.
06:08Doc, earlier, we were talking about how these shoes are a bit special because it's a bit customized for Scotty, right?
06:15When I got these shoes, he assured me that this is a player exclusive based on what he told me.
06:25Or, these shoes were made specifically for that particular player.
06:31So, this also has a signature of Sir Scotty.
06:34So, both shoes have a signature.
06:36So, this is a good memorabilia from our FIBA World Cup experience.
06:41Speaking of the World Cup, Doc, you have one more item here about the FIBA World Cup,
06:47which is one of the host countries of the Philippines, Doc.
06:50So, this is one of the important items in my collection.
06:55So, this is the program of the FIBA Hall of Fame Ceremony,
07:00which was held here in the Philippines, of course,
07:03where one of the inductees in the Hall of Fame is what we consider
07:09perhaps the greatest Filipino basketball player of all time.
07:13So, Sir Carlos Loizaga or Kaloy Loizaga.
07:17I got this from the Loizaga family.
07:19They have an extra copy of this program.
07:23Then, they were very generous enough to give this to me.
07:29And to add, these are the pages pertaining to Sir Kaloy Loizaga.
07:34So, he was signed by his siblings.
07:38He is our first superstar, we can say, in terms of international basketball.
07:43All of the Asian Games that Sir Kaloy participated in as a player,
07:48the Philippines won a gold medal.
07:50Then, Sir Kaloy also competed for our country in several international tournaments.
07:57Particularly, the most important is the 1954 World Basketball Championship,
08:04where the Philippines became a bronze medalist.
08:07It remains to be our highest finish in a FIBA Sanctioned Tournament.
08:13Not just by the Philippines, but by an Asian country.
08:17Yes.
08:17And also, in that tournament, Sir Kaloy was part of the mythical five.
08:23In New Zealand, Doc, we won the World No. 22.
08:28In the Olympic Qualifiers in the past few months,
08:33we won the World No. 6 in Latvia.
08:37So, I believe you also have a memorabilia from that particular game, Doc.
08:43So, this is the last item that we will show to our teammates.
08:48For this, I would like to thank Coach Jong Uchiko.
08:52So, Coach Jong, thank you for this.
08:53Thank you, Coach Jong.
08:55So, in this T-shirt, I talked to Coach Jong
09:00if he can sign for our Philippine team.
09:06So, this is a Philippine Basketball T-shirt
09:10that was signed by the entire coaching staff
09:13and all the players of the Philippines
09:16who competed in Latvia,
09:20in our Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
09:23So, we can see that it is very complete.
09:28Of course, there is the signature of Coach Jong,
09:30who gave Sir Mikko this memorabilia.
09:35And there, we can see here, Coach Tim Koon.
09:39Doc, I have a question for you.
09:40Ever since Coach Tim Koon held our GILAS program,
09:44we have been winning.
09:46So, what can you say about Coach Tim's performance
09:48as basically the leader of our basketball program?
09:54So, I think that there has been a paradigm shift
09:56ever since Coach Tim held our GILAS program.
10:01Before, our mindset was that we can just stick together.
10:07Or if we have a strong opponent,
10:12it is expected that we will not win.
10:16So, Coach Tim installed a belief
10:19in his players that with the proper preparation,
10:24we can beat anyone.
10:26So, that belief is what I think is good about his GILAS program.
10:31And not just in GILAS, but also in his basketball fans.
10:34That's right.
10:35We can see that, Doc, in the results
10:37of our recent tournaments and competitions.
10:40For example, against New Zealand,
10:42you can see that our players are no longer under pressure.
10:47Even when the visiting team was chasing,
10:50they trimmed the lead to two points in the fourth quarter.
10:54But as you can see, GILAS Philippines is just composed.
10:57Okay, we just want to thank Mr. Stephen Go
11:01and Mr. Raymond Sison for our beautiful venue today,
11:05The Hobby Stadium here in Doña Gemadí,
11:08in New Manila, Quezon City.
11:10If you are a sports collector, sports fan,
11:12or you just want to taste delicious food,
11:16come here to The Hobby Stadium again.
11:19I am your host, Rafael Bandairel.
