Queensland politics has welcomed a new era, with the state’s MPs sworn into parliament and a new speaker elected. But the LNP’s first time on the government benches in almost a decade was overshadowed by protestors rallying against its promise to axe the Truth-Telling and Healing inquiry.

00:36There might be 150 protesters but 5 million Queenslanders passed a vote on the 26th of October
00:41for the government to scrap the path to treaty.
00:43The Liberal National Party made the commitment following the voice referendum defeat.
00:48The state government is yet to say when it will introduce legislation to repeal the path to treaty laws
00:54but has promised to introduce three new bills this week,
00:58including changes to youth justice laws to include adult crime, adult time.
01:03Inside parliament it was a day of formalities.
01:08The state's new premier swearing an oath of allegiance.
01:12MPs followed and again making history.
01:15The state's first Muslim MP, Bisma Asif, took her oath on the Quran.

01:24and being able to bring something that's important to me into the chamber.
01:27The LNP's member for Condamine, Pat Weir, was elected speaker.
01:34And as is tradition, was dragged to the chair.
01:37We should never forget or take for granted the immense honour
01:41it is to represent the public of Queensland in this chamber.
01:45He then met the governor who will formally open the state's 58th parliament tomorrow.
