"There's an appropriate way to behave. But social media is not where I take myself seriously." Sara Ali Khan's freewheeling chat with Brut at #Cannes2023 is not just about her red carpet look or films.
Transcript
00:00In the middle of all this, I have to also celebrate who Sara is.
00:04I'm quite proud of the person that I am.
00:07Hello and Namaste, I'm Sara Ali Khan from Brut.
00:09We're rolling.
00:10Sara?
00:11That's also rolling.
00:13That'll be fine.
00:13That'll...
00:14No, that camera.
00:15Oh yeah, that's also rolling.
00:16So you can just look at her.
00:18Thanks for checking.
00:20That's rolling as well.
00:22Sara, welcome to Khan.
00:23Thank you for speaking to Brut.
00:25I'm going to start with the red carpet first.
00:27Tell us a little bit about your outfit.
00:30What are you wearing?
00:31I'm wearing Abu and Sandeep.
00:34I think they're the epitome of traditional clothes.
00:37And I think as a young girl, I've always been very proud of my Indian-ness.
00:42And I think that, you know, India has put itself increasingly on the global map for its culture.
00:51It's always been known for its art, its history, its heritage.
00:54But now even with our films, I think, you know, the world is becoming a smaller place.
00:59And I'm so happy and proud to be representing my country.
01:03And what better way to do it?
01:06You've spoken about how your first two films were a major, obviously, success.
01:11And then in a very recent interview,
01:12you had spoken about how the other two that did not do so well.
01:16You said, you know, you wanted to be...
01:18You were not being as authentic as you would have liked to be.
01:22You're playing these what sound like amazing roles, which are coming in.
01:26Tell us a little bit about how do you pick these roles
01:30and the authentic Sara still shines through?
01:32Because they seem to be completely different from one another.
01:35I think that's part of being authentic also, you know,
01:38to be fearless in the choices that you make.
01:42And in fact, just yesterday, my trailer dropped.
01:46And a journalist asked me that, you know, is this character relatable to you?
01:50Can you relate to this character?
01:52And I realized the more and more that I'm working,
01:54that while relatability is great,
01:57as an actor, the cultivation of our imagination is supreme.
02:01That's what's most important,
02:03because we're not always going to be able to do roles
02:06or showcase characters and lives that we can understand.
02:11You know, I haven't been on a wheelchair.
02:12I can't be a freedom fighter, you know.
02:15So I think that it's important to imagine.
02:18It's important to surrender to the director.
02:22And that's what I'm, you know, working on doing.
02:24And as far as being authentic is concerned,
02:27I think being very honest to that moment
02:30and being as organic and true as you can
02:32and not pretending, just truly believing and imagining
02:37that you are in that circumstance
02:38and then trying to do justice to your role is what I endeavor to do.
02:43You already had a fan following before you debuted.
02:46Even when your films didn't do that well,
02:50you had more fans during that time
02:52because of all the social media content that you were putting out.
02:55You put yourself out there quite often on social media
02:59with a girl next door image, almost, if I may say so.
03:04Tell us a little bit about that, Sara,
03:05because I feel like your fans feel like they know you through social media.
03:09I think they do, because I think that, you know,
03:12as an actor, I'm so lucky and privileged
03:16to be able to play a Bihari girl in Atranki,
03:18a Punjabi girl in Zara Hatke, Zara Bachke,
03:21a girl on a wheelchair in Gaslight, you know,
03:24a girl, like I said, a modern girl from Delhi in Murder Mubarak,
03:28a freedom fighter in Hai Vatan, Mere Vatan.
03:31In the middle of all this, I have to also celebrate who Sara is.
03:36I'm quite proud of the person that I am.
03:38And I think that that's what my social media is for me.
03:41It's my window to be who I am,
03:45not just my director's actor or not just my mother's daughter.
03:50You know, it's just who I am.
03:52And I think that people see that.
03:54And I think that even before I started working,
03:58I don't want to apologize for the person that I am.
04:01And I think that there's a fearlessness that you see on my Instagram, authenticity.
04:06And I don't want to lose that.
04:08I think that, you know, there's the right time and place for everything.
04:11Like today, for instance, you know, when I was walking the red carpet,
04:15opening ceremony of such a prestigious film festival.
04:19There's an appropriate way you behave.
04:21But social media is not where I take myself seriously.
04:26That's my space to have fun.
04:27You have to do the right thing in the right measure at the right time.
04:31What is the best thing about being authentic as a public figure?
04:35You don't get caught because you're not pretending.
04:38So it's not like, you know, they see also,
04:42like, at least I believe that you shouldn't lie because then, you know,
04:45keeping up with kisko kaunsa jhoot bola, you don't want to get there.
04:49So it's just better to be real and be authentic
04:52because then you don't have to pretend.
04:53And that's just easier, right?
04:54What is your dream project?
04:56Where do you see yourself?
04:58Give us a little glimpse into what that ambition is that fuels you.
05:01You know, honestly, like, I never thought I'd be standing here today.
05:05Talking to you.
05:07And I think that I just want to be able to live every moment that I'm living fully present.
05:12You know, I just want to be fully present in every moment that I have been given
05:17because I already have so much more than I thought I would.
05:21Of course, I want to do many films.
05:23I want to win many awards.
05:25But more than anything, I want to be true to every moment
05:28and just keep growing and be better than I was yesterday.
05:31That's the endless dream.
05:35Who's your ideal, Sarah, in life, on screen?
05:39I think my mom.
05:40I think my mom is my ideal in life because I think she's the epitome of strength.
05:46She taught me how to be organic by just being organic.
05:50And she's fearlessly who she is, you know.
05:52And I think that that's great.
05:54Thank you so much for speaking to us.
