00:00The University of Alabama's Rush Week is the topic of an upcoming documentary,
00:04but we need to talk about why the production of it was so controversial.
00:07In August of 2021, thousands of young women took to TikTok to document their sorority
00:11recruitment process at the University of Alabama. A week of Get Ready With Me and OOTD videos
00:16garnered over 2 billion views under the hashtag Bama Rush, with much of the internet fixated on
00:20the week-long process. The following year, Vice Studios filmmakers followed four individuals as
00:25they prepared to rush at Bama. In the trailer, it suggests active sorority members who are afraid of
00:29it negatively affecting sorority culture advise potential new members against participating in the
00:34documentary. Before participating in Rush, PNMs reportedly signed a contract agreeing not to
00:39disparage sororities or sisters and vow not to record what happens in parties. And some individuals
00:44claimed they were dropped under the belief they were wearing wired microphones and filming
00:48themselves at parties for the documentary, all of which Vice Studios confirmed was untrue.
00:52In a statement, the University of Alabama clarified they were not involved in the production and
00:56denounced it, saying, quote, the University has not authorized any third-party entity to film,
01:00record, or document any recruitment activities. Despite that, Bama Rush will premiere on Max on May 23rd.
