00:00Speaking in Canada, Taiwan's former president Tsai Ing-wen says her country has ramped up
00:05investment in its self-defence.
00:07Taiwan, for example, has continued to increase defence investment over the past eight years.
00:17Our defence budget has risen by over 80% at a rate of nearly 8% each year.
00:25I want to emphasise that this is well above our average GDP growth of 3.74% over this
00:34period, which is 2018 to 2016 to 2023.
00:44Tsai was speaking at the Halifax International Security Forum in Nova Scotia, where she accepted
00:50the 2020 John McCain Prize for Leadership.
00:54During her speech, Tsai emphasised the need to support Ukraine to deter authoritarian
00:59aggression.
01:00Therefore, effective deterrence against authoritarian expansionism is fundamental to safeguarding
01:08our democracies and maintaining international order.
01:14That is why our continued support for Ukraine remains imperative as a Ukrainian victory
01:21will serve as the most effective deterrence against future aggression.
