Double sided embroidery is one of the outstanding national traditional crafts in China. Using the same base material and in the same embroidery process, embroider images with the exact same outline on both sides but different patterns or same pattern but different colors.

How to do double-faced double-sided embroidery?

The double side is simply created over the back side of the first design but at the same time the first side is done. Part of it has to do with the design; it has to be either the same design (mirror image) or the second design has to be drawn to lay precisely over the first. The embroiderer then stitches both designs at the same time.

When embroidering areas that are differently colored on each side, the artist uses two needles threaded with different colors. She holds down satin stitches on the upper side with couching stitches from the underside. The couching stitches are not visible on the upper side because the thread is so fine. On the underside, the thread makes satin stitches as it travels from couching stitch to couching stitch. The result: parallel satin stitches on top and bottom in two different colors.

In areas where the colors different, they use two needles or one needle on one side, but another thread without needle on the other side . The trick is to embroider one over the back of the other without leaving any knots, loose threads, etc. in site. Essentially, the back side design both hides its own "back" and the back of the original design because it is stitched over it.
