00:00Hello everyone, I'm Keila Tordilio and I'm here in Baku, Azerbaijan for the COP29 or Conference of the Parties of the United Nations.
00:08I'll take you inside the venue to find out what's happening here and why it's being held.
00:15Here's what you need to know.
00:22The COP is the country's annual meeting to solve global warming.
00:28The goal is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
00:32We're already feeling the effects of climate change,
00:36such as a warmer world, stronger storms, heavy droughts, and many more.
00:42I want to thank the investigation, all our efforts...
00:45Because of this, urgent action is needed.
00:49That's why it's important for any country to make a decision in these meetings.
00:53It's my first time at the COP, so it's a bit overwhelming for me.
01:00Negotiations, meetings, press conferences, and side events will be held simultaneously over the next two weeks.
01:06That's why you really need to organize your schedule.
01:09The COP is open to registered representatives of parties, observer states, and admitted observer organizations.
01:18It's not open to the general public, but people can apply to attend.
01:23The COP-29 is called the Finance COP because it discusses how financial support can be received
01:31by climate-vulnerable countries such as the Philippines.
01:35Climate change has a price, and it's expensive.
01:40Governments target billions of dollars every year for climate finance.
01:47But they are still debating how much exactly, and how it can be achieved.
01:53Aside from the need for an urgent transition from fossil fuels to renewable energies,
01:59big polluters must also pay to support developing countries facing climate impacts.
02:08In this way, climate finance is a matter of climate justice.
02:13On the other hand, many are upset by the decision made by the COP in Azerbaijan because it's ironic.
02:21Ironic?
02:24Azerbaijan is an oil-producing country, and most of its money comes from the export of fossil fuels to Europe and other parts of the world.
02:35Fossil fuels are the cause of climate change because of the high carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases produced by them in the atmosphere.
02:45In fact, Azerbaijan is one of the largest gas fields in the world, and it plans to add more oil production.
02:53So, what now?
02:57While the negotiations and exchange of ideas in this conference are ongoing,
03:02one thing is clear, we can only have a sustainable future if we prioritize the well-being of each person.
03:10People over profit.
03:12Business as usual is no longer possible.
03:14The developed countries agreed!
03:17Many have watched the results of the COP-29.
03:21Are rich countries and companies ready to pay for the effects of their actions on the world?
03:28Our future, our rights!
03:30Will they help us fight for our lives and our future?
