00:00Welcome to the IPAPER's latest investigation, Christmas Sandwiches.
00:04Here we have four of the eight sandwiches we have ranked based on how healthy they are.
00:08You make the healthier choice, you get to eat more Quality Street later.
00:11So here we have Morrison's Brie and Cranberry on a malted bread,
00:16Pretz Christmas Lunch Sandwich, M&S Christmas Sando,
00:21and the Waitrose Vegan Bubble and Squeak Sandwich.
00:24You've got vegan, you've got vegetarian, you've got your classic, and you've got your twist.
00:29We're going to try these, see how they taste,
00:31and then I'm going to let you know where they rank based on healthiness.
00:35We're going to start here.
00:38Oh, there's spinach in there. That's nice.
00:43Brie is so sticky.
00:44It was unfair of me to say that the cranberry would let this down.
00:48It's nice and tart, which is good with the brie.
00:51The brie is brie.
00:53It's stunning.
00:53I would enjoy this as like a finger food sandwich.
00:56Wouldn't eat the whole thing.
00:57It's yummy.
00:58I'm going to go for this one, Vegan Bubble and Squeak Waitrose.
01:01I was vegan for five years, so I'm very familiar with how dire sandwiches have been.
01:10Also, it's colourful, which makes you feel like, yeah, that's healthy, man.

01:15That might be the through line in all of these.

01:23That tastes more Christmas.
01:25I will happily eat this after we stop filming if I'm not full.
01:28If you don't like red cabbage, steer clear, because that's very present.

01:32This is the one that people talk about the most, I think.
01:34I'm inspired and intrigued by the crispy onions.
01:37I deliberately looked for one that wasn't too cranberry heavy.
01:42Our old friend spinach is here.
01:44I have high hopes that this is going to be very Christmassy.

01:50There's too much stuff.
01:50The turkey was quite dry.
01:52The stuffing's OK.
01:53The cranberry sauce is sweet.
01:54My crispies weren't crispy.
01:56Not a big fan otherwise.
01:57Confession, was most excited about this one.

02:02It's in a box, so it feels expensive.
02:04It's M&S, so it is expensive.
02:08I always enjoy when a sandwich comes in a house.
02:11This is the only one with different bread.
02:13This is brioche-style bread.
02:18The slaw is really nice.
02:19It's a pickled ginger slaw.
02:20The chicken goujons, unsurprisingly, are not crispy.
02:24They're softened.
02:25It's good. It doesn't taste like Christmas.
02:27I do think I will finish this, or at least half of this.
02:29I enjoyed it.
02:32Now it's time to reveal where they rank based on health.
02:36This is according to Rhiannon Lambert,
02:39the nutritionist who we consulted for this story.
02:41We looked at the main nutritional metrics
02:45based on what you should have on an average day.
02:47If you're trying to make a healthy choice
02:49because you know you've got big dinner later,
02:51you know you just want to eat
02:52a whole lint reindeer yourself,
02:54or you're actually a health-conscious person,
02:57I'm here to let you know
02:58that this is the highest ranking of these four.
03:01This is the bubble and squeak from Waitrose.
03:03For once, the idea that vegan food is healthier is true.
03:07With this sandwich,
03:09Rhiannon talked about high levels of fiber,
03:13a strong level of protein, and low-saturated fat,
03:16and this being a well-rounded selection of treats
03:20within malted bread.
03:22I can also say it tastes honestly really good.
03:24Next is my friend slash foe, the M&S Christmas Sando.
03:29Not Christmassy, but healthy.
03:31It's very low in saturated fat.
03:33It's a lean protein, being chicken,
03:35which arguably is what makes it not Christmassy.
03:38More of a variety of plants used in this sandwich,
03:43making it pretty good for you-ish.
03:46Next we have the most Christmassy tasting,
03:48but my least favorite, Christmas Lunch from Pret.
03:51There's processed meat in the form of the sausage stuffing.
03:55It's very high in fat and saturated fat.
03:58That's why Rhiannon said it's not as good for you.
04:00Overall nutritional basis, this ranks lower.
04:03Unfortunately, our least healthy
04:05of the four we have here today
04:07is Morrison's Brie and Cranberry,
04:10thanks to that delicious brie.
04:11It's high in saturated fat, but we knew that.
04:14You get what you think you're gonna get
04:15with a brie sandwich.
04:17Interestingly, vegetarian, vegan,
04:19completely different ends of the spectrum health-wise,
04:22really cheese is our greatest delight and our biggest enemy.
