Queen Camilla was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Literature by the University of London, whose Chancellor is the Princess Royal. Her Majesty and her sister-in-law arrived at the Senate House building in Bloomsbury, central London, together by car for a rare joint engagement. As an avid reader, The Queen has long been a supporter of literacy in the UK and across the Commonwealth. The Queen’s Reading Room launched as an online book club in January 2021
before becoming a charity which promotes the benefits of reading.

04:52Chancellor, in accordance with the Charter, Statutes and Ordinances of the University,
04:57I present to you this person on whom we wish to confer the degree of Doctor of Literature,
05:03honoris causa, Her Majesty the Queen.
05:06Born Camilla Rosemary Shand on the 17th of July 1947, just down the road at King's College
05:13Hospital, Her Majesty's relationship with London has been lifelong.
05:19But it was her time at the University of London Institute in Paris, then known as the British
05:24Institute in Paris, that brought her into the fold of our own institution.
05:30She is patron or president of more than 100 charities and is well known for her steadfast
05:36support of causes, including health and well-being, animal welfare, the arts, and empowering women
05:44and girls.
05:45Her commitment to the promotion of literacy in literature stands out as a testament to
05:50her personal passion and belief in the transformative power of books.
05:56No one, I think, better captured the joy to be found in literature than Her Majesty when
06:03she said, and I quote, reading is exciting, reading is fun, reading is cool.
06:14So it's only fitting that this honorary Doctor of Literature recognises Her Majesty's exceptional
06:19efforts to advance literacy and education, not simply as a public duty, but as a personal
06:25mission inspired by a lifelong love of reading.
06:30Her Majesty understands that reading is more than just a pastime.
06:34It's a powerful force for learning, empathy, and self-expression.
06:39Books transport us to other worlds, they expose us to new ideas, and they enrich our humanity.
06:47Her Majesty makes regular visits to schools, libraries, workplace reading schemes, and
06:52prisons, meeting people of every sort to promote the power of reading.
06:57She's helped to inspire a new generation of writers and thinkers through her support for
07:03international initiatives, like the BBC's 500 Words Creative Writing Competition.
07:10Chancellor, you will know that Her Majesty today becomes the seventh member of the Royal
07:17Family to receive an honorary degree from the University since 1903.
07:23Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, whose lifetime of service we all continue to remember with
07:30great admiration and affection, was awarded both a Doctor of Laws and a Doctor of Music.
07:38In conferring this honorary doctorate upon Her Majesty Queen Camilla, the University
07:43of London recognises not only her personal achievements, but the values of public service,
07:50empathy, and dedication.
07:53Chancellor, it's with great pleasure that I ask you to confer the degree of Doctor of
07:59Literature, honoris causa, on Her Majesty the Queen.
