00:00Along with Mary Jane Velozo's memories and experiences,
00:03the long fight to get her out of the death row in Indonesia
00:07and now that she's going back to the Philippines,
00:10her family's wish is for Mary Jane to be released.
00:14Watch Ivan Mayrina.
00:19Mary Jane Velozo's work was desired by other countries on April 2010.
00:24But it was denied to her.
00:25The letter that was sent to her by a recruiter in Indonesia
00:29contained more than 2 kilos of heroin.
00:32It was discovered when she arrived at Yogyakarta Airport.
00:36Six months later, she was found guilty of drug trafficking
00:40and sentenced to death.
00:43We were scared.
00:45When she was in prison,
00:47we were scared because of the recruiter.
00:50They said they were international syndicates.
00:54If we were caught,
00:55they would kill our children in Indonesia.
00:59After more than a decade in the death row,
01:01Mary Jane will be able to return to the Philippines.
01:04This is the happiest moment of our lives.
01:08Especially for her children.
01:10There must be a reason for the president to be this confident.
01:15If you meet a written agreement,
01:18there's still no answer.
01:20But they were the first to come to us to talk about this.
01:25So we're extremely confident it will happen.
01:28And certainly, our president must be privy of information
01:33which will explain his confidence.
01:35President Bongbong Marcos said that he will send Beloso back home.
01:39This resulted in more than a decade of talks with the Indonesian government.
01:43He also thanked the new president of Indonesia, Prabowo Subyanto.
01:48For 14 years,
01:49three administrations fought to save Beloso's life.
01:54The Philippines repeatedly filed a case against him.
01:57In April 2015,
01:58Beloso was found guilty of 10 convictions
02:01that were filed against him in Indonesia.
02:04But President Noe Noe Aquino
02:07did not finish writing to Indonesian President Joko Widodo
02:09to ask for a clemency for Mary Jane.
02:13Aquino also spoke directly on the phone.
02:15The Indonesian Foreign Minister proposed to consider
02:18Beloso as a witness against those who recruited him.
02:21The Indonesian government understated
02:24the implementation of the death sentence
02:27on our countryman, Mary Jane Beloso.
02:40Long live Mary Jane Beloso!
02:44This is also a consequence of the police's prosecution
02:46of the recruiter of Beloso, Christina Sergio,
02:49who is facing qualified traffic in persons,
02:51illegal recruitment and estafa.
02:54When the Duterte administration entered,
02:56the Philippines' position was
02:58to do whatever is in accordance with Indonesian law.
03:02He said, follow your own laws.
03:05I will not interfere.
03:06Indonesia allowed Beloso to testify against Sergio
03:11and his other recruiter, Julius Lacanilau.
03:15Until this September 2022,
03:18when President Marcos took office,
03:20Beloso's family gathered again
03:22to ask Widodo for executive clemency.
03:25But after Widodo's term
03:27when Mary Jane's case could not be resolved,
03:29when Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto took office,
03:33it seems that the atmosphere has changed.
03:36The Indonesian Chief Minister for Law and Human Rights,
03:38Yusril Izah Mahendra,
03:40asked Beloso to go home
03:42under the new Indonesian police
03:44called Transfer of Prisoners.
03:46The Philippines accepted their conditions
03:49despite the court's decision.
03:52That's why Mary Jane's return to the Philippines
03:55is not because of her right to live in Nueva Ecija,
03:57but because of the government's
03:59decision to imprison her.
04:00The Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong
04:03is one of the places where Mary Jane can be imprisoned.
04:06Even if she is imprisoned,
04:07Mary Jane will be saved from the prison
04:09because the Indonesian government
04:11does not have a death penalty in the Philippines.
04:13When she arrives here,
04:14she will be serving the sentence
04:16that was meted in Indonesia.
04:18So, she will just continue her sentence.
04:21And I think it's worth emphasizing also that
04:24the most important aspect of this all is
04:27the difference in our laws.
04:29There, they allowed the death penalty.
04:31Here, we all know that it was abolished.
04:34So, we don't have a death sentence here.
04:36Mahendra is in the power of President Marcos
04:39to forgive Beloso
04:41for what he wants to happen to his lawyers.
04:43We are pushing for an absolute clemency,
04:46which even the Coordinating Minister of Indonesia
04:51expressly stated that it's now going to be
04:54the responsibility of the Philippine authorities,
04:57whether or not to grant clemency.
05:00I hope that Mary Jane will be able to go home.
05:03I hope that she won't be imprisoned.
05:05I ask the government to help us
05:08if Mary Jane will be able to go home.
05:10I hope that she will be able to go home.
05:12For GMA Integrated News,
05:14Ivan Merina is your witness.
