Celtics insider Mego joins! Was last night the first "statement" win for Tatum and the Celtics? Could Tatum win MVP this season?
Transcript
00:00Good morning. I'm here to talk about the happy team.
00:02Yeah, the team that has a really good coach and is all set for a while.
00:07The team who wins and seems to at least, you know, like their coach enough.
00:13I mean, that was a good win last night.
00:15It was an awesome win last night. I think last night was obviously you break a 15 game win streak to start the season for the Cavs.
00:24I don't know if you care if it's the NBA Cup or not, but you know, there is something in it for that.
00:29And on top of it all, I think it was the best game that we've seen from Jason Tatum this season and the first statement game that we've seen from him.
00:36I know he had the buzzer beater, which was then contested by the refs after the fact the other night.
00:41If you stayed up late for that Raptors game.
00:43But last night was really the first statement from Jason Tatum in the MVP race.
00:48I was going to say, so you say you say statement MVP wise.
00:53That's what we got from Jason Tatum last night.
00:55Yes, so I have been and I'm still skeptical about whether or not Jason Tatum for MVP is a realistic expectation for this year.
01:05I do think he'll finish in the top three where last year he finished top six leads the league in points currently.
01:11Yes, it's early and I know there's people out there who are like November basketball and they'll roll their eyes at MVP talk.
01:18But look last night is the kind of game that voters should and probably will consider when they're looking at the body of work for who's going to be considered MVP in June because they break the win streak for the Cavs.
01:31The Cavs were the number one team in the last unbeaten team and it's a nationally televised game.
01:38So it's not just a regional thing.
01:39This is a big platform and Tatum comes up with 33 points, 12 boards, seven assists, and he makes a huge impact on defense, especially after that third quarter when the team was really bleeding out because I'm sorry, but Kata couldn't do a damn thing on the inside around that room.
01:56I think it's about I think it's more it's his time now for like, all right, so guys that might finish a little bit or might be in the conversation with him.
02:06The Joker.
02:07All right, the Joker's got his Giannis Giannis got his I think now when you start to look at it, it's Tatum's time.
02:15He's the next guy.
02:16He's proven that he can win a chip and now it's the next time.
02:19So I think the voters and they go.
02:21All right, let's give it to Tatum.
02:23Do you think because he was so on last night?
02:25That's why Jalen took a while to kick it into high gear like Jalen started off kind of slow, which always worries me as a Jalen Stan.
02:32But it was it because Tatum was so on fire that maybe he steps back and says, all right, this is Tatum's game.
02:38I think it was a little bit of the way that the game started Courtney where it was the Cavs having a really good interior defense and really strangely deciding to let the Celtics play from the perimeter where they got the threes going early.
02:52JB has a nice three, but that's much more Tatum's game and Derek White's game and Al Horford came alive like turn back the clock last night with his threes.
03:02And so I think Jalen Brown really explodes when he when you need the points in the paint and you need him to get into that physical inside game and even go inside outside.
03:12They didn't even need to do that to start last night.
03:14They were just from the outside.
03:16And so I think that's why it looks so much more like Tatum's game from the jump.
03:20And Tatum's more of like a facilitator where he'll like get a lot of things going.
03:26Jalen Brown's game.
03:27I think he's a better version.
03:29But if you wanted to compare him to somebody and watch who he plays, he reminds me a lot of two guys.
03:35Jimmy Buckets, Jimmy Butler, his style and DeMar DeRozan, right, where he's probably a better three-point shooter than those guys.
03:42But his mid-range and his ability to get to the rim because of his explosiveness is what really kind of excels Jalen Brown.
03:51He just looked way better in the fourth than he did in the first half, I thought.
03:54So that was just he turned it on because he gets into that like Jimmy Buckets bully mode and it's like, all right, I'm going to take it.
04:00I'm going to take it to the paint and it's a good dynamic and we've always had this discussion, but they know each other's roles now and that's why they're able to play so well.
04:10You like the cup, though.
04:12I kind of do.
04:12Really?
04:13I kind of do.
04:14I'm like, I look, I don't think that the Celtics, I like it so far because the Celtics haven't really had to sacrifice anything for it yet.
04:21And so I don't care about raising a banner.
04:25They shouldn't do that.
04:26If they win it.
04:27I like the idea of having a double championship for this team so that the national talking heads have to spend more time on the Celtics because I really think I was talking to a former Celtic about this the other day.
04:40I really think there is still this anybody but the Celtics with the league right now.
04:46I think that the league doesn't consider them the sexiest team.
04:50They want to talk to perk.
04:52I know I'm just talking like from a from a big picture perspective.
04:56I don't they wanted to be Anthony Edwards so bad.
04:59They wanted to be a they it's the same thing that they did with Joker a couple years ago.
05:05They didn't want to pay attention to the Nuggets.
05:07Look at Denver and I do think this team has personality, but it's starting to get a little bit annoying guys.
05:13They are running an ad right now the league about it's a whole new year.
05:19It's a whole new look a totally different League and I'm like, what about the champs that just brought back their whole team?
05:27Like it's you're literally just something your nose at the Celtics.
05:30So part of it is I want them to be able to have another big platform to take over.
05:35And we haven't gotten to the point where we had to see there's this point differential where if you're gambling on any of these games going forward,
05:42you're really gonna have to pay attention to after this round.
05:45There's this point differential thing that may lead towards Missoula putting the starters back in and playing more time.
05:52And that's the part that concerns me because I don't want wear and tear for basically a meaningless championship in the middle of the season,
06:00but we haven't gotten to that point yet.
06:01So I can still enjoy they want to talk at the League because even with their their playing tournament cup commercial Tatum's nowhere to be found on that.
06:10I mean they got maybe it's because Tatum isn't sellable.
06:13Maybe his personality is not outgoing.
06:17He doesn't he is what the League wanted these players to be 20 years ago.
06:22Oh when Allen Iverson came into the League and all of a sudden you have to have a dress code like this is what you wanted to be
06:29and then you look at the guy and you're like,
06:31I have nothing to do with how much he loves being a dad,
06:34right?
06:35I want Anthony Edwards.
06:37The one who's like F this I'm not saying it's baby mama drama.
06:41I don't know.
06:41Why don't we put up like more highlights of jaw?
06:44Oh wait,
06:44jaw can't be in the League right now.
06:46Come on guys.
06:47Well, I don't think it's what I want.
06:48I have nothing to do with it.
06:49I'm just saying that whatever the League believes the audience wants they don't think Tatum's personality is sellable.
06:57Do you think it's because he has a quiet personality though?
06:59Because I do think the NBA is one of the more outspoken leagues where the guys that get the most clicks are the ones that are always dressing.
07:06Crazy saying crazy things are always out there.
07:08The League likes the drama Tatum where you should wear some.
07:10Yeah,
07:10he wears crazy things.
07:11Not as weird.
07:13Not as weird.
07:14He does,
07:14but not as weird.
07:15Anthony Edwards wear sweatpants.
07:17The League loves the drama.
07:20That's what I've seen.
07:20What Joe Burrow is wearing lately.
07:23And the girls are loving it.
07:24He looks good.
07:25Yeah.
07:25Look,
07:25I'm not allowed.
07:26They don't love it.
07:27Yeah,
07:27they do.
07:27I've been asked not to talk about Joe Burrow in my house.
07:30So really?
07:31Yeah.
07:32I mean,
07:32I like Joe.
07:33I mean,
07:33you're a newlywed.
07:34I mean,
07:35it didn't take long.
07:36No,
07:37this happened well before the nuptials.
07:39Okay.
07:39I was told the way that I talk about Joe Burrow is quote creepy because of our age difference.
07:46He was.
07:46Well,
07:46I don't even think you can't think about it.
07:49Greg hates age.
07:49I hate.
07:50I always,
07:51I always forget how young he is.
07:52He was wearing a Hillary Clinton pants.
07:55I mean,
07:55and it looked like,
07:56well,
07:56no,
07:56it didn't.
07:57Yeah,
07:57I guess I don't like that.
07:58So I'm like,
07:59we're like the way Debo Samuel dresses.
08:01I'm like,
08:01all right,
08:02whatever.
08:02But the NBA,
08:03I think they like the drama,
08:06not like the like the crazy off the court drama,
08:10but they like those guys and they are right.
08:12That's why the Joker,
08:14they don't really love him.
08:15Because,
08:16oh,
08:16no,
08:16I have to go home to my horses.
08:18Yeah,
08:18they don't.
08:20And Tatum's like,
08:21you know,
08:21he's a,
08:22he's a,
08:22he's a,
08:23he loves his kid.
08:24He's obviously a huge,
08:25uh,
08:26uh,
08:26mama's boy.
08:27And he proud of that.
08:29And he's not a big,
08:30big,
08:32put your pants on.
08:35Like me,
08:36grew up in a single parent household.
08:37So you tend to lean more towards being,
08:40you know,
08:40cool with being a mom.
08:41Wait,
08:41so I'm confused.
08:42The twitch is saying that he's the most sellable and you guys were saying he's not sellable.
08:46I don't understand.
08:47No,
08:47no,
08:47I think he is sellable,
08:48but he does.
08:49He doesn't have the,
08:51the good,
08:51flashy talking drama that the,
08:54some of the league likes,
08:55but you can sell them.
08:55But you're like,
08:56Giannis doesn't have that either.
08:57Yeah,
08:58but Giannis is like,
08:58even like,
08:59he's like a B,
09:00he's like a little kid.
09:01Giannis has that kid energy.
09:02Giannis is turning heel,
09:03man.
09:04Oh,
09:04he is.
09:05We,
09:05we need a good heel in the NBA and he's turning heel.
09:08I'm enjoying it.
09:09Um,
09:09you,
09:10it looks like you're going to get Christoph's Porzingis back soon.
09:13Uh,
09:13he next step in his return,
09:16go,
09:16he went to Maine or whatever.
09:18So he was actually local with Maine.
09:21So I don't know how that works,
09:23but the,
09:23the main Celtics were down here and he's rehabbing with them.
09:26And then he's being recalled back to the Celtics.
09:28Uh,
09:28but it's interesting because I was at practice last Friday,
09:32got a little glimpse of him in a practice.
09:34Penny coming off the course.
09:36I was like,
09:36is he like scrimmaging with the guys in practice?
09:39What's he that far along?
09:41Ask Joe Missoula.
09:41Joe Missoula said,
09:43well,
09:43he's been doing some defensive reads against the coaches.
09:46And then drew holiday comes up and he's like,
09:48yeah,
09:48I was doing some drills with porting this.
09:51Okay.
09:52So I think it's pretty close to say that he's going along very
09:55well.
09:56It's just a matter of what the exercise science guys and gals
09:59decide is the right time for him to return.
10:02But I would guess it's going to be December.
10:03When they get him,
10:04that train is going to be hard to stop when you get paused.
10:08Pausing has changed everything.
10:10And so hopefully they were saying December.
10:12So that's good that,
10:13you know,
10:13we're a few weeks out and I want to see him.
10:16I want him back out there because I want to see how much
10:18he can go through.
10:19And,
10:20you know,
10:20if God forbid,
10:21knock on wood,
10:22something does happen.
10:23And I'd rather it happen,
10:25you know,
10:25a lot earlier rather than right before the playoff starts.
10:28So they can continue to build the chemistry with the team
10:31that they have and get you need Nemus on the court because
10:35they exposed him yesterday,
10:36especially in the pick of roles.
10:38Yeah,
10:38it was unfortunate because I really like Mimi.
10:40I think that he's,
10:41he's a great project.
10:42He was on a two-way contract last year and you see how
10:45much playing time.
10:46He's getting now not a good night last night.
10:48Like they really exposed him down in the paint defensively,
10:52but I'm still bullish on he can be a little bit of
10:55a stopgap while you're trying to get porzingis back in
10:57the mix.
10:58Another big night for our guy Pete Pritch last night.
11:00Yeah,
11:01you can count on him when you need money,
11:02man,
11:02my guy.
11:03He's a he.
11:04Yeah,
11:04he's nails.
11:05Yeah,
11:05he really just does not fear any situation.
11:08And even last night,
11:09I think it was either in the second or third quarter
11:11where he pulled up short in his mid-range game and had
11:14this little floater over like you see Jalen Brown do
11:17sometimes Courtney and it's like this.
11:19Does he know how tall he is?
11:21How does he get that to go?
11:22He just has that mentality that you can't teach.
11:25He talks bad-ish and I love it.
11:27Like he was like,
11:28he just there's something about him.
11:30You get he got has that little that that it factor to
11:33him that swag to him where he talks ish and he's,
11:36you know,
11:36he's definitely done a great job and he's like found
11:39his role,
11:40you know,
11:40they've definitely found that role for him and no good
11:43for Greg.
11:44You've been on him since day one.
11:46Yeah,
11:46you know any big plans for Thanksgiving?
11:49I mean,
11:49are you hosting or I'm going to the in-laws?
11:52We're having a big and proper Thanksgiving.
11:55So Courtney had to play in my outfit.
11:57Is that local?
11:58I'll see.
11:58I'm staying local not getting on any trains or planes
12:02or anything.
12:02What is proper mean?
12:04Oh,
12:04like a drinks hour.
12:06Oh,
12:07I see,
12:07you know,
12:08the whole works.
12:09The whole thing.
12:10That's what they do.
12:11Yeah,
12:12like two forks.
12:14No,
12:14not too,
12:14not quite that.
12:16Also,
12:16I don't think I still don't think I'm allowed at the
12:18big table.
12:19So I don't know at what point we graduate from the
12:22kids table.
12:22I would have thought that adults that are married get
12:26moved up.
12:26Probably.
12:27No,
12:27there's too many people.
12:29The issue is that this Thanksgiving is very good.
12:32And so people never phase out of it.
12:34In fact,
12:34they just try to add more people with their children.
12:37And if they are a proper family,
12:39then it's hard to get to the adults table.
12:42They got like you on the secondary table.
12:43Keep them hosting as long as you can.
12:45Like,
12:46that's a nightmare when you have to.
12:47Yeah,
12:47when you have to have you guys ever carved a turkey?
12:50Yeah,
12:51I have the one.
12:51Yeah.
12:51No.
12:52Yes.
12:52Okay.
12:52So I will say a million times.
12:54I'm one of the better Turkey car.
12:58It's really not at all.
12:59It's very simple.
13:02It's very important.
13:04I will tell you what you want to try it.
13:05You want to keep the the turkey slices as thin as
13:08possible,
13:09which so you may feel like,
13:11you want to rush through it and do bigger slices.
13:14You don't want to do that.
13:15So because people prefer thinner and larger slices.
13:20So as to provide for gravy and mashed potatoes surface
13:24area on maximize the surface.
13:26And I correct about that.
13:28I kind of like that's good piece.
13:29Well done by you.
13:29Yeah,
13:30let's go.
13:30Yeah,
13:30nobody does.
13:32I do.
13:33I do.
13:34So do you use that one with that plugs into the
13:36wall with the ridges on it?
13:37Like a little knife deal?
13:38I feel like my mother had one of those 30 years
13:41ago.
13:41Will you be making the stuffing inside the turkey?
13:44I don't know.
13:45But the usual person who carves the turkey is having
13:48knee surgery.
13:49And so my mother-in-law was a little panicked and I
13:52said, well,
13:53why don't we just try to carve the turkey together?
13:56And my husband said,
13:57that's a terrible idea.
13:58Don't try to do that.
14:00And I said,
14:00I think we can just do it off YouTube.
14:02So now I kind of feel like I have something to
14:03prove.
14:04Yeah,
14:05you don't need a YouTube tutorial to carve or
14:08Turkey.
14:09That's smart.
14:09It's been apparently you have to like dislodge.
14:13Oh God,
14:14have you Google it?
14:15I don't have you done that you have to like
14:17dislodge the joint.
14:18Just rip you.
14:19It's very it's like you have to treat it like a
14:22Lonzo ball.
14:24We don't need a YouTube tutorial for everything in
14:27this country.
14:28Like I don't you take the meat off the bone and
14:30everything and put it all in one thing.
14:32So that's kind of when you lay it out.
14:33It's all deboned.
14:35Ain't that how you do it?
14:36You got to cut it off and you got to have
14:37the drumsticks.
14:38You need the electric Carver.
14:40That's the first thing.
14:41Not very green.
14:43Is that the one with the ridges?
14:45Yeah.
14:45Yeah,
14:45like it plugs into the wall.
14:46Oh,
14:46yeah.
14:47And the two the two blades that you put in
14:49that go in the in the opposite direction.
14:51You're talking me out of this.
14:52I don't know if I can do it.
14:53No,
14:54we'll talk.
14:54We'll talk to you before.
14:55Okay.
14:55Okay.
14:56See you again next week.
14:57That is mega on a Celtics Wednesday.
