00:00It took 14 years before the Philippines allowed Mary Jane Viloso to return to the Philippines by the Indonesian government.
00:06On April 2010, when she was arrested in Indonesia after earning more than 2 kilos of heroin from her suitcase,
00:13Viloso's gate.
00:14Her recruiter just tapped the suitcase and she didn't know that it was an illegal drug.
00:19Six months later, Viloso was found guilty of drug trafficking and sentenced to death.
00:25Since then, the Philippine government has repeatedly asked Indonesia to give Viloso a clemency.
00:31In 2015, Viloso was sentenced to 10 years in prison because of cases related to illegal drugs.
00:38But Viloso's firing squad did not continue after Viloso was temporarily released or given an indefinite reprieve by Indonesia.
00:46That was after President Noy Noy Aquino elected Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
00:51Next, Viloso's recruiter, Christina Serio, filed a police report.
00:55According to Serio, she was found guilty of drug trafficking.
00:58The Aquino administration asked the Indonesian government to review Viloso's case
01:03so that she can be a witness against the people who recruited her.
01:08This was first denied by Indonesia, but it was eventually accepted.
01:11After Viloso's execution in 2015,
01:14President Rodrigo Duterte gave Indonesia a go-signal in executing Viloso in 2016,
01:20according to Widodo himself.
01:22This was denied by Duterte's former spokesperson, Ernesto Abella.
01:26He said that Duterte told Widodo to do what was in their law.
01:31Within a few years, Indonesia allowed Viloso to give a testimony against Serio
01:37and his recruiter, Julius Lacanilau.
01:41In 2022, Viloso's family filed a complaint with President Bongbong Marcos
01:45who asked Widodo for an executive clemency for Viloso.
01:49In May 2023, President Marcos and Widodo met on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Indonesia
01:55regarding Viloso's case.
01:57Aside from the clemency, the Philippine government did not stop asking
02:01for Viloso's sentence to be lowered
02:03or for him to be extradited to the Philippines for his case there.
