00:00Deadpool and Wolverine is so full of Easter eggs and winks to the audience that even the
00:04most seasoned Marvel fan probably missed a few.
00:07Here's all the hidden stuff that may have blown by you.
00:10From dunks on Deadpool's creator to a wasteland littered with Easter eggs, the folks behind
00:15Deadpool and Wolverine put maximum effort into packing the film with small details.
00:19Did you catch all of these?
00:21Warning.
00:22Spoilers ahead.
00:23This is what I'm talking about!
00:27There's a montage early in the film in which Deadpool looks for a living Wolverine from
00:31the other worlds of the multiverse to help him.
00:33Needless to say, most of them aren't willing to help Deadpool, but there are some noteworthy
00:36Wolverines in the bunch.
00:38First, there's a very short version of the character, which isn't actually referring
00:41to a specific version.
00:42See, Hugh Jackman is comics-accurate in many ways, but height is not one of them.
00:47In real life, Jackman is 6'2", but in most media, Wolverine's a lot shorter, about 5'3",
00:52in the comics.
00:53And while this version in the movie may be a bit exaggerated, it's still more accurate
00:57than what Hugh Jackman portrays.
00:58Among others, there's also Old Man Logan, who shoots Deadpool with a shotgun he had
01:02under his blanket, the Wolverine from Wolverine vs. Hulk, who is wearing the brown and tan
01:06costume from the original comics, and a Wolverine with amazing glam-rock-style hair that appears
01:10to be a throwback to Wolverine's first solo series.
01:14Then there's a variant from The Uncanny X-Men No. 251, which shows Logan crucified on an
01:18X amidst a blanket of skulls, and Patch, Wolverine's alter ego, a gambler who wears a white tux.
01:24Deadpool, of course, chooses none of these as his champion.
01:27Instead, he goes with the version who let down his world and likes to drink a lot.
01:30Oh, whiskey d---- of the claws.
01:33It's quite common in Wolverines over 40.
01:36In the X-Men series, telepaths like Xavier and Cassandra Nova are borderline unstoppable.
01:41If you can control your enemies' minds, you control the battle.
01:44To defeat this, characters like Magneto, Sebastian Shaw, and Juggernaut have specially designed
01:48helmets that block all forms of telepathy.
01:50When it turns out, that barrier works both ways, as Deadpool demonstrates when he slaps
01:54just such a helmet down on Cassandra's head during a climactic fight.
01:58Reference-wise, it has strong whiffs of a move Deadpool deployed at one point during
02:01the Jerry Duggan run of Uncanny Avengers.
02:03In those comics, Deadpool gets one over on a mind-controlled Rogue by slipping the helmet
02:07on her head during a fight.
02:09It instantly snaps Rogue out of it, letting her turn the tables on her enemy, just like
02:12Deadpool turns the tables on Cassandra Nova.
02:16Cassandra has been in the Void since her birth.
02:18She thinks of it as her home, and doesn't like to leave.
02:20But that doesn't mean she begrudges other people the opportunity.
02:23In fact, she allows Deadpool and Wolverine to leave after they defeat her, but let her
02:27live.
02:28And she does it with a sling ring.
02:29What's the thing on his hands?
02:31If you saw Doctor Strange, the term should sound familiar.
02:33A sling ring is a device sorcerers wear on their hands to open portals to other places.
02:38That Cassandra got a sling ring in the Void probably means a sorcerer got sent there before
02:42her.
02:43Whoever that sorcerer was, they must not have been very good at their craft, because Cassandra
02:46has the sling ring, and the sorcerer no longer exists.
02:50Cassandra easily uses the sling ring to open a portal to Deadpool's world, which also begs
02:53the question, how hard can it be to use those things?
02:57When they find themselves back in Deadpool's universe, Deadpool and Wolverine end up slamming
03:01into a store called Liefeld's Just Feet.
03:03For casual viewers, it's just another thing that gets smashed up throughout their journey.
03:07But any comic book fans in the audience know it's poking fun at Rob Liefeld, the co-creator
03:11of Deadpool, and his apparent inability to draw feet.
03:14At this point, it's pretty much a running joke after Deadpool 2 also poked fun at Liefeld.
03:18"...suck a freak show comic book artist came up with that little chestnut.
03:22Probably a guy who can't draw feet!"
03:26But the joke definitely didn't start with the Deadpool movies.
03:29Though Liefeld has shown feet in his comics, he seems to avoid them a lot of the time,
03:33and it's an old joke that the guy just can't draw feet.
03:36That doesn't mean that Liefeld holds any hard feelings about it, though.
03:38In fact, Liefeld approved of the movie and enjoyed the gag as much as everyone else.
03:42He posted on X,
03:43"...it's an honor to have the Liefeld name on display in a prominent manner in what will
03:47be a most significant film.
03:49Who wouldn't want this as part of their legacy?"
03:51Until his death in 2018, Stan Lee made cameos in almost all the Marvel movies, including
03:56Deadpool.
03:57In the first Deadpool movie in 2016, he plays an emcee at a strip club, and in the second
04:01Deadpool movie in 2018, he's depicted in graffiti art as dominoes flying through the air.
04:06Deadpool and Wolverine continues that tradition, even though Lee is no longer with us.
04:10During the fight between Deadpool and Wolverine and a hundred other Deadpool variants, there's
04:14a Stan Lee steamer ad on the side of the bus in the scene.
04:16While it's not the most noble cameo, it is an amusing joke and a great Easter egg for
04:20those who spot it.
04:22Deadpool is known for his signature snarky humor that doesn't always hit above the belt.
04:26He frequently goes for the jugular in Deadpool and Wolverine, but there are a couple jokes
04:30sprinkled throughout the movie referencing actors' real-life divorces that may sting
04:33a little harder.
04:34At one point, Deadpool teases about Wolverine.
04:37He's usually shirtless, but he's let himself go since the divorce.
04:40While Wolverine has had plenty of lovers in Marvel Comics, this is most likely referencing
04:44Hugh Jackman actually divorcing his wife, Debra Lee Furness, which was announced to
04:48the public in September 2023.
04:50The pair was married for 27 years, so if that's what the joke is actually hinting at, it's
04:54pretty amazing Jackman would be cool with it.
04:56Do you want to talk about what's haunting you, or should we wait for a third act flashback?
05:00Uh, go f—k yourself.
05:02The next divorce reference comes when Deadpool meets with other trashed multiversal Marvel
05:05characters, including Elektra, with Jennifer Garner reprising the role.
05:09It's brought up that Daredevil, who was played by Garner's ex-husband Ben Affleck in 2003's
05:13Daredevil, has since died.
05:15Deadpool offers his condolences, to which Elektra responds that it's fine.
05:19No love lost there, it would seem.
05:21Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Garner's divorces aren't the only real-world celebrity gossip
05:25Deadpool and Wolverine dabbles in.
05:27Wesley Snipes also appears as Blade, marking a troubled reunion of sorts between him and
05:31Ryan Reynolds, who played Hannibal King in 2004's Blade Trinity.
05:34The story is that Snipes was notoriously difficult to work with in Blade Trinity, and after the
05:39fact, it was rumored that Reynolds flat-out refused to work with Snipes again.
05:42Clearly, that's all in the past, since the two have a few scenes together in Deadpool
05:46and Wolverine, and also poke fun at the reported contentious relationship.
05:49After some Deadpool banter, Blade states how he doesn't like the mark with the mouth, to
05:53which Deadpool responds, quote,
05:55"...you never did."
05:56It's a humorous way to call out the controversy, but after 20 years, maybe it's for the best
06:00that the two were able to put any animosity between them to bed.
06:03After all, you know what they say.
06:05"...some motherf-----s are always trying to ice skate a bill."
06:09Fans had one thing to say after seeing Lady Deadpool appear in a Deadpool and Wolverine
06:12trailer.
06:13That's definitely Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds' wife in real life.
06:16Even though Lady Deadpool never unmasks in the movie, she does get a couple of lines
06:20that are indeed said by none other than Lively.
06:23It's a fun cameo that helps turn the flick into a real family affair.
06:26However, there's a chance fans may have guessed Lively was the vivacious Deadpool variant
06:29based on a cheeky line from earlier.
06:32Grace Poole tells Deadpool and Wolverine to watch out for the Deadpool Corps, especially
06:35Lady Deadpool.
06:37He even gives her some props by saying how she just had a baby and already got into such
06:40great shape.
06:41Reynolds and Lively have four children together total, with their most recent being little
06:45Olin, who came into the world in February 2023.
06:482012's The Avengers has one of the most significant post-credits scenes of all time with a Thanos
06:53tease, and it also has one of the funniest when the Avengers are seen hanging out at
06:57a shawarma shop.
06:58Have you ever tried shawarma?
07:00There's a shawarma joint about two blocks from here.
07:02I don't know what it is, but I want to try it."
07:04Deadpool and Wolverine decides to get in on the fun by having the duo enjoy some shawarma
07:07toward the end of the film.
07:09Deadpool jokingly says how the Avengers discovered shawarma, and obviously that isn't true.
07:13But the movie did raise awareness about the Middle Eastern dish.
07:15The Avengers boosted shawarma sales in the United States, with many restaurants and food
07:19carts reporting how they saw a sharp increase in people ordering the meal following the
07:23movie's release.
07:24The movie goes to show the power of a well-timed joke, and for many, The Avengers may have
07:28been the first time they had ever heard about it, hence Deadpool's riff.
07:32The credits for superhero movies tend to be exceptionally long.
07:35It takes a lot of people to get a spectacle of this magnitude off the ground, but if you
07:38stay in your seat the whole way through, you just may encounter some special dedications
07:42to those who are sadly no longer with us.
07:44Henry Delaney, the son of Rob Delaney, who plays Peter in Deadpool and Wolverine, passed
07:48away in 2018 from a brain tumor at just two and a half years old.
07:52Deadpool and Wolverine is dedicated to Henry's memory.
07:54Another dedication in the credits is for Raymond Chan, who died on April 23rd at the age of
07:5956.
08:00He worked in various capacities for numerous film productions, including serving as the
08:03supervising art director for Marvel movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers Infinity
08:07War, and Endgame.
08:09He was a production designer for Deadpool and Wolverine, and following his passing,
08:12Ryan Reynolds shared a statement with Deadline.
08:15He built worlds from scratch, and did so in the most collaborative and inclusive ways.
08:19Ray was peerless.
08:21There are several crowd-pleasing moments of heroes suiting up in Deadpool and Wolverine,
08:25but the only moment cooler than Hugh Jackman pulling up his cowl is the next generation
08:29of Weapon X sticking on some shades before a fight.
08:31And not just any shades, the very same sunglasses that she wore in Logan.
08:35In a movie rife with references, this is another detail that's less of a throwaway moment and
08:39one carefully placed amidst the chaos.
08:42It's a lovely little bit of care applied to Daphne Keene's character that proves just
08:45how important she was in this 24-year-old franchise, and hopefully what we could see
08:49more of in the future if X-23 ever returns.
08:53After seemingly retiring as Wolverine in 2017 after the character's death in Logan, Hugh
08:57Jackman celebrated by taking center stage in the blockbuster movie musical The Greatest
09:01Showman.
09:02Of course, Jackman decided that he wasn't actually done, and now that the Australian
09:06actor is back in Deadpool and Wolverine, his stint as P.T.
09:09Barnum is the perfect ammunition to lovingly poke fun at him.
09:12As the two mutants scuffle in a Honda, Logan ends up pressed against the radio, and when
09:16that happens, he's treated to a snippet of the opening number to the Oscar-nominated
09:19movie.
09:20This isn't the first time that a Deadpool movie has joked about musicals, either.
09:24After all, Deadpool 2 features a running gag about how,
09:26"...do you want to build a snowman?" from Frozen sounds suspiciously similar to Papa
09:30Can You Hear Me from Barbra Streisand's 1983 film Yentl.
09:33"...do you want to build a snowman?"
09:35Yes!
09:36But I can't!
09:37Some musical fans might be sad that neither Deadpool nor Wolverine sing This Is Me, but
09:42hopefully their fight scene set to You're the One That I Want from Grease makes up for
09:45it.
09:47Given that the Void is a garbage dump filled with just about anything, it acts as a resting
09:50place for both MCU and 20th-century Fox Marvel movies alike.
09:54In the case of the latter, even the logo of the studio itself, which has since been bought
09:58by Disney, has been left to crumble and fall apart.
10:01There are also a few iconic vehicles that have made their way over.
10:04There's Red Skull's Hydra-Car from Captain America the First Avenger, the cupcake truck
10:08Moon Knight commandeers in his Disney Plus series, and even the Guardians of the Galaxy's
10:11former ride, the Milano.
10:13Additionally, while it might not line up with designs from the previous iterations
10:16of the Fantastic Four, the Fantastic Car does hover in being ridden by Cassandra Nova's
10:21cronies.
10:22There's no limit to the scale of some Marvel relics, either.
10:24Besides a decaying Ant-Man being used as a lair, there's also a Chitauri Leviathan seen
10:28in the sand looking a little worse for wear.
10:31You can also spot what may or may not be a SHIELD helicarrier, depending on whether it
10:34came from the Deadpool movie or the MCU.
10:37As for the X-Men side of things, there's also a huge chunk of the Golden Gate Bridge right
10:41in the middle of the Void, which was last seen torn apart courtesy of Magneto in X-Men
10:46The Last Stand.
10:47There's also a reference to a movie released decades before the MCU even started.
10:51The burned-out car from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, the film starring Reynolds' comedy
10:55hero John Candy, has made its way to the Void as well.
10:59After an exceptional bit of dance choreography and desecration of a hero, Deadpool and Wolverine
11:03flashes back to Wade in the office of Stark Industries' top dog, Happy Hogan.
11:07Wade is trying his best to get in with the Avengers, but he gets politely shot down by
11:11Hogan, who tells him he can't just be in it for the fancy title and needs something to
11:14fight for.
11:15While it might take a while for this lesson to sink in, viewers can spot some memorable
11:19paraphernalia spread around the room.
11:21Most of the items on show are understandably related to Tony Stark.
11:24There's Pepper's gift to Tony proving that he did have a heart after all, along with
11:28a shiny silver piece of Mark II headgear.
11:30There's also the toy helmet worn by a child who was later revealed to be a young Peter
11:34Parker, who tried his hand at heroism in Iron Man 2.
11:37There's also a photo, taken years later, of the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist
11:41alongside his web-slinging protégé.
11:44Of course, let's not ignore the Cap collectibles present, either.
11:47Happy also has a collection of Captain America trading cards, just like the ones that were
11:50stained with Agent Coulson's blood in The Avengers.
11:53Stark's prototype of Steve's shield can also be seen resting on a cabinet.
11:57After seeing Wade and Logan leap through a portal in the first official trailer for Deadpool
12:01and Wolverine, fans knew to expect some references to the mystic arts.
12:05Sure enough, Cassandra Nova has amassed a trove of magic artifacts that would make the
12:08collector jealous.
12:10First off, there's the Sling Ring, which Nova uses to open the gateway.
12:13She only could have gotten it by stealing it from a sorcerer.
12:15"...Mastery of the Sling Ring is essential to the mystic arts.
12:20They allow us to travel throughout the multiverse."
12:23Judging by an important bit of attire stretched out elsewhere in Nova's throne room, it seems
12:27like the so-called magician she took it from during her time in the Void was a variant
12:31of Doctor Strange.
12:32In the back of Nova's lair, you can get a glimpse of the Cloak of Levitation that Strange
12:35has worn ever since his debut in 2016.
12:38Of course, there's no chance that the Strange Nova presumably killed was the same Strange
12:42that fans have come to love.
12:43Thankfully, the Strange of Earth-616 is still out there.
12:47It's only a matter of time before Deadpool tracks him down and talks his head off, though,
12:50and that might be a fate worse than death.
12:53Deadpool isn't above mocking the Marvel Cinematic Universe nor Marvel's Fox-verse, but it's
12:58even more surprising to see the character make jests about the DC Universe, given the
13:02rivalry between the two studios.
13:04Still, Deadpool doesn't miss an opportunity to make a subtle joke at the expense of Black
13:08Adam, the DC film that Dwayne The Rock Johnson claimed was going to change everything.
13:13"...The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change."
13:19That didn't exactly come to pass, given that Black Adam bombed at the box office.
13:23During the scene in Deadpool and Wolverine where Paradox is introducing Deadpool to the
13:26Time Variance Authority, Deadpool is entranced enough by the offer to join the MCU's main
13:31timeline to parrot Johnson's promise about how the power hierarchy of the universe was
13:35about to change.
13:37Take that, DC.
13:39While most of the variant Wolverines are references to various Marvel comics, the Kavalreen — the
13:44Wolverine played by Henry Cavill — serves to poke fun at Marvel's biggest competition
13:48in the superhero space.
13:49Upon meeting this variant, Deadpool says,
13:51We'll treat you so much better than those a**holes down the street — a clear dig at
13:55Warner Bros.' DC movies.
13:57Cavill famously played Superman in Man of Steel and its controversial sequels, Batman
14:01vs. Superman, Dawn of Justice, and Justice League.
14:05After director Zack Snyder parted ways with the studio, WB wavered on where Superman fit
14:10into their continuing DC Extended Universe until Cavill returned for a cameo in the credits
14:14of Black Adam.
14:15WB ultimately scrapped the DCEU in favor of a reboot, and while some DCEU actors were
14:21invited back for the new James Gunn-ran cinematic universe, Henry Cavill wasn't among them.
14:27While there are a good hundred Deadpool variants in Deadpool and Wolverine, none impress Deadpool
14:31Prime as much as Mary Puppins, a.k.a. Dogpool.
14:34When he sees the dog, he immediately falls in love and has some disturbingly intimate
14:38exchanges with Dogpool's incredibly long tongue.
14:41The dog is played by Peggy, and it's not a hyperbole to say she's Britain's ugliest dog.
14:46Putting that aside, Deadpool is quite taken with her, and he even goes so far as to call
14:50her something special after meeting Nicepool.
14:53Deadpool Prime tells Nicepool, quote,
14:54"...if you can't be a responsible pet owner, then maybe you shouldn't have this little
14:58unicorn."
14:59When it comes to Deadpool, there's no higher compliment than calling someone or something
15:03a unicorn.
15:04For whatever reason, Deadpool is obsessed with unicorns in the films.
15:07Of course, his love of the mythical beasts goes back further in the comics.
15:11There aren't too many books featuring the Merc with a Mouth that don't include unicorn
15:14references, and they play a large role in marketing his films.
15:18While Dogpool isn't a unicorn, simply referring to her as such is all any fan needs to know
15:23that Deadpool absolutely loves her, though not necessarily in a healthy manner.
15:28The Marvel Cinematic Universe has gotten a lot of flack in recent years for predictable
15:32dialogue.
15:33One such example of this is the trope of characters saying,
15:35"...he's right behind me, isn't he?" as a big bad guy is approaching them.
15:39Recently, this was done without irony in Thor Love and Thunder.
15:43"...being very careful not to bump into any of those big shadow monsters.
15:47They're behind me, aren't they?"
15:50In typical Ryan Reynolds fashion, one line in Deadpool and Wolverine references this
15:54common criticism.
15:55After Deadpool brings yellow-suited Wolverine back from his timeline, the wasted Wolverine
15:59collapses on the ground as Paradox explains to Deadpool that not only is it too late to
16:04save his friends from dying, but the Wolverine he brought back is notoriously the worst Wolverine
16:09in the entire multiverse.
16:10As Deadpool chews out Paradox, Wolverine wakes up from his drunken daze, giving Deadpool
16:14the perfect opportunity to say,
16:16"...he's right behind me, isn't he?"
16:18In Deadpool 2, Wade Wilson also takes a dig at the cliché when he gives Weasel a threatening
16:22rant about what he's going to do to Cable.
16:24"...or a homemade mating drum.
16:28He's standing right behind you, isn't he?"
16:32Hopefully, acknowledging the criticism means Marvel will take extra care in the future
16:35to fine-tune its dialogue.
16:39Deadpool and Wolverine begins with a delightfully gory opening credit sequence, wherein the
16:43Merc with a Mouth uses Wolverine's adamantium skeleton to slaughter a team of TVA agents
16:48to the tune of the in-sync hit, "'Bye, Bye, Bye."
16:51It's the first of many pop needle drops in the film, but you might not realize that its
16:54inclusion was all but promised in the marketing for the previous Deadpool movie.
16:59At the end of the music video for Ashes, the Deadpool 2 opening credit song by Celine Dion,
17:04Deadpool applauds Dion's performance before telling her it's too good for Deadpool 2 and
17:08she needs to tone it down.
17:09When Dion refuses to do the song over, telling Spider-Man to beat it, Deadpool responds by
17:14saying,
17:15"'God, I should've asked in sync.'"
17:17Sure enough, they did ask in sync for the next film.
17:20Fans of the Korean pop group Stray Kids were likely excited to hear the band's voices while
17:24watching Deadpool and Wolverine.
17:26Their new single, Slash, was written for the film's soundtrack after Ryan Reynolds fell
17:30in love with their work several years ago.
17:32On a musical competition show called Kingdom Legendary War back in 2021, they opened up
17:37one of their live performances by having band member Felix recreate the start of the
17:41opening action sequence from the original Deadpool film.
17:44Mimicking Reynolds' dangling, his legs often overpass, Felix breaks the fourth wall and
17:48jokes around with the audience before sliding off his perch into a crowd of dancers.
17:53Reynolds saw the performance and reached out, developing a friendship with some of the group's
17:56members and at one point toying with the idea of giving them all on-screen cameos in Deadpool
18:01and Wolverine.
18:02He shared during a press conference for the film,
18:04The initial plan was to have them appear in the film, but with the strike happening in
18:07the middle of production and so many other issues, it just became logistically impossible.
18:12The sheer size of the group was also apparently an anxiety, with the star adding,
18:16"...I'll never forget the look on our line producer's face when I said that there are
18:19eight of them."
18:21Among the many members of the Deadpool core are two juvenile versions of the character,
18:25Kidpool and Babypool.
18:27Kidpool has had a long history in the comics.
18:29He's a variant of Wade Wilson who attends Professor Xavier's orphanage for troubled
18:33boys.
18:34The characters don't get a lot of screen time, but they were very important for Ryan Reynolds.
18:38Kidpool is played by his daughter Inez, who was born in 2016, while Babypool is the newest
18:43member of the Reynolds family, Olin Reynolds, who was born in 2023.
18:47Considering that Reynolds' wife, Blake Lively, also appears in the same sequence as Lady
18:51Deadpool, it's quite sweet that the Deadpool core was a family affair.
18:55It also marks the first time his kids have shown up on screen in one of his movies.
18:59Reynolds properly thanked them at the film's premiere, saying,
19:01"...I hope that, if I'm lucky, this moment will be the most traumatic thing — that
19:04is, the contents of this movie — that happens in your wondrous life."
19:08By this point, Reynolds and Lively's children are quite used to international attention
19:11since their godmother Taylor Swift name-checked them in her song, Betty, in 2020.
19:16Hopefully, Inez's portrayal of Kidpool means that the father-daughter duo can share some
19:20screen time together in a future Deadpool movie.
19:24Deadpool's ability to break the fourth wall and speak directly to the audience comes straight
19:28from the comics and has been a part of Deadpool's cinematic journey since he had his head chopped
19:32off at the end of X-Men Origins Wolverine.
19:40The Deadpool trilogy doesn't disappoint when it comes to fourth-wall breaks, but what about
19:44his many variants?
19:45The Deadpool and Wolverine Deadpool core consists of around 100 variants, but only one of them
19:50shows that they have the ability to break the fourth wall.
19:52Upon meeting Deadpool Prime and Wolverine again in the third act, Nicepool notices his
19:56counterpart's fourth-wall break when he refers to himself as Van Wilder, which is a reference
20:01to Reynolds' breakout film role.
20:03Hearing this, Nicepool says, while turning to face the camera,
20:05"...I can gently tap the fourth wall, too.
20:07The proposal."
20:08Reynolds starred in the proposal opposite Sandra Bullock.
20:11What a nice, gentle tap.
20:14The special thanks section of the end credits of Deadpool and Wolverine saves a few spots
20:18for some hilarious references.
20:19One example is Truthful Timmy, which is a reference to something Deadpool says earlier
20:23in the film.
20:24Here's a pretty R-rated joke about Deadpool's nickname, the Merc with the Mouth.
20:28For the job of Hugh Jackman Wrangler, special thanks is given to Betty Reynolds, Ryan Reynolds'
20:32and Blake Lively's middle daughter.
20:34Reynolds expanded on just what Hugh Jackman Wrangling was at the film's premiere, telling
20:38People,
20:39"...my four-year-old Betty sort of loves Hugh, like unconditionally, and she expresses that
20:43love through unblinking violence."
20:45It seems that Hugh Jackman Wrangler might actually be a much more dangerous job than
20:49a special thanks really gives credit for.
20:51Other names listed include Stan Lee's daughter, J.C. Lee, as well as the various comic book
20:56creators.
20:58The Deadpool movies have never been particularly precious about the targets of their irreverent
21:02humor.
21:03No, I spit acidic vomit.
21:04We've all eaten at Arby's.
21:05Wade Wilson is known for being as brutal with insults as he is with his knives and guns,
21:10so when fans learned he'd be joining the MCU, many were curious how this dynamic would evolve.
21:15After all, Marvel Studios is owned by The Walt Disney Company, a brand so protective
21:19of itself that it was hard to imagine how any of Deadpool's usually crass humor would
21:23survive.
21:24As it turns out, Ryan Reynolds and Sean Levy didn't have to hold back much, going so far
21:28as to acknowledge and openly mock the critical rut the MCU is in right now.
21:32When Hugh Jackman's Wolverine variant stirs from his drunken stupor in the TVA headquarters,
21:37Wade welcomes him to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but snarks that they're both, quote,
21:41"...joining at a low point."
21:42While one could read this line as Deadpool referencing the moral low point of his universe
21:47being destroyed, it seems more fitting that he's giving the audience a knowing wink about
21:51what joining the MCU means now versus back in 2019.
21:55The MCU famously references Back to the Future in Avengers Endgame, while the heroes discuss
21:59time travel.
22:00When Ant-Man explains how he thinks time travel works, the Hulk corrects him.
22:04Ant-Man looks dejected and says,
22:06"...so Back to the Future's a bunch of bulls—."
22:08But that's not the only Back to the Future reference in the MCU.
22:11In Deadpool and Wolverine, Deadpool travels the Marvel multiverse looking for a replacement
22:15Logan to take the place of his reality's anchor being.
22:18As he travels through time and space from one reality to another, the Power of Love
22:22by Huey Lewis and the News plays in the background.
22:25The song begins playing as a multitude of Logan variants introduce Deadpool to their
22:29claws.
22:30The Power of Love is a prominent fixture of the Back to the Future trilogy, and Huey Lewis
22:34actually appears in the first film, as Marty McFly plays an instrumental rendition of the
22:38Power of Love.
22:39For a Battle of the Bands audition, Lewis stops him mid-song and tells him,
22:43"...I'm afraid you're just too darn loud."
22:45There are plenty of cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine, but some of them are a little more
22:49subtle.
22:50While fans of the Reynolds family might easily recognize Blake Lively's voice behind the
22:54mask of Lady Deadpool, they might miss a few of the other members of the Deadpool Corps.
22:58Most notably, Matthew McConaughey contributes the voice for Cowboy Deadpool, which marks
23:02the iconic actor's first appearance in the MCU after he turned down the role of Ego in
23:07Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
23:09McConaughey has also been on record as saying he wants to play the Incredible Hulk.
23:13It seems like a missed opportunity to have had him play the character fighting Wolverine
23:16earlier in the film.
23:18Another Deadpool variant is Headpool, the zombified, disembodied head of Wade Wilson
23:22who made his comic debut in 2006.
23:25This version of Deadpool is voiced by Nathan Fillion, who is not a newcomer to the Marvel
23:29Cinematic Universe.
23:30Fillion previously cameoed in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy
23:34Vol. 3.
23:35Although Headpool's appearance is very brief, the character is memorable enough to get a
23:38popcorn bucket from AMC Theatres.
23:41Other Deadpools that appear in the Deadpool Corps scene don't have many speaking lines,
23:45but reference comic characters including Deadpool 2099, Zenpool, and Roninpool.
23:51The Merc with a Mouth finally joins the MCU in Deadpool and Wolverine, another joke-filled
23:55R-rated outing that's as meta as it is Marvel.
23:58If some of these zingers flew right over your head, you're not alone, and we're here to
24:02help.
24:03At the beginning of the movie, Deadpool unearths the skeleton of the Wolverine who died at
24:07the end of Logan, and to put it lightly, isn't very kind to the remains.
24:11Later, a TVA agent who's horrified to see what Deadpool has done gives his opinion about
24:16the whole thing.
24:17There are many ways that this agent could express his love of Wolverine.
24:20He could say he was a great hero.
24:22He could say he saved a lot of people.
24:24He could even say that he had great hair.
24:26But instead, he says that Wolverine is,
24:28"...the only thing worth a s---- to ever come out of Canada."
24:30That's a very specific jab at Deadpool, and Ryan Reynolds.
24:34If you can believe anything Deadpool says, he's Canadian.
24:36A hush falls over the crowd as rookie sensation Wade W. Wilson, out of Regina, Saskatchewan,
24:43lines up the shot.
24:45And Ryan Reynolds definitely began his life story in Vancouver, British Columbia.
24:49Wolverine too was born in Canada, despite the person who plays him, Hugh Jackman, being
24:53Australian.
24:54In the end, Deadpool does not take the insult lightly, either for himself or his real-life
24:58alter ego.
25:00Deadpool gives himself the moniker Marvel-Jesus, or MJ if you're nasty, because since Deadpool
25:05and Wolverine is the first Deadpool film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he'll be the
25:09savior that will help Marvel's fortunes rise from the ashes after some unfortunate box
25:13office bombs.
25:14However, it's also a reference to the Jacksons.
25:17And while many will think it's an allusion to Michael Jackson because of the MJ, this
25:21is specifically a callback to Janet Jackson, who said her name is Janet, Miss Jackson,
25:25if you're nasty, in her 1986 hit song, Nasty.
25:29When Deadpool and Wolverine are taken to Cassandra Nova's headquarters in the Void, the Merc
25:33with a Mouth needs something to threaten the bad guys with, and he comes up with the
25:37perfect dig — at least, if you don't like musical theater.
25:40He declares, quote, "...he'll sing the entire second act of Music Man with no warm-up."
25:44He's referring to Logan in this quote, and while Logan doesn't look much like a song-and-dance
25:48man, the person who plays him, Hugh Jackman, is.
25:51In fact, Hugh Jackman has had a whole career on Broadway, which has included starring as
25:55Harold Hill in The Music Man.
25:57"'River City' isn't in any trouble."
25:59"'Then I'll have to create some.'"
26:01He spent a year in the Broadway revival, from December 2021 to January 2023, and received
26:05a Tony nomination for Best Actor for his performance, after already winning one in 2004 for another
26:11Broadway show, The Boy From Oz.
26:12So while singing without a warm-up might be hard, Hugh Jackman — and therefore Wolverine
26:17— could certainly do it.
26:18Indeed, he'd probably blow everyone away with his amazing musical stylings, despite Deadpool's
26:22bad take.
26:24Deadpool and Wolverine are stuck in the Honda Odyssey of an attractive Deadpool alternate
26:28when Deadpool says,
26:29"'Friends don't let friends leave the house looking like they fight crime for the L.A.
26:33Rams.'"
26:34It's a thoughtful statement.
26:35Wolverine is wearing a blue and yellow suit that looks a lot like what the Los Angeles
26:39Rams play in.
26:40A few tweaks to the L.A. Rams uniform, and it would be a perfect match.
26:43This was especially the case in the years when one of the NFL side's uniforms was all
26:47yellow with royal blue accents.
26:50But at least one version of the uniform is close enough today that Wolverine's suit will
26:53no doubt bring the team to mind.
26:55And actually, Wolverine really does look like a glorified football player when he's in full
26:59superhero mode.
27:00He even crouches toward the ground like football players do in a snap.
27:04Try to unsee it.
27:05We dare you.
27:06Gambit, played by Channing Tatum, is another hero who landed in the scrap heap of the void
27:10in Deadpool and Wolverine.
27:12But his movie never even got made.
27:14In fact, Tatum spent years trying to get a Gambit movie off the ground and went through
27:17multiple directors for it before Disney canceled it after taking over Fox.
27:21Although Tatum is open to returning to the character, it seems unlikely.
27:25And therefore, Gambit and Tatum's place in the void makes perfect sense.
27:29So does Deadpool's quip when he asks,
27:31"'Who's your dialect coach?'
27:32Gambit, who is from New Orleans, speaks with a Cajun accent, an aspect of the character
27:36that Tatum would have embraced.
27:37"'These beignets need to be more than you did, mon ami.'"
27:41Tatum's extreme accent is barely decipherable.
27:44Deadpool breaks the fourth wall — his real superpower — to mock Channing Tatum's portrayal.
27:48What dialect coach would let him get away with that?
27:51Wesley Snipes' Blade is another hero found in the void.
27:54When the group of heroes are traveling to confront Cassandra and her lackeys, Blade
27:57comments that there's only been one Blade.
28:00While this seems like a passing boast, it's actually a reference to the fact that Marvel
28:04has had trouble trying to get a new Blade movie off the ground.
28:07While Mahershala Ali has been cast as the half-vampire, Marvel has been working on the
28:11movie since 2019.
28:13Two directors have come and gone from the project, and it seems no closer to being filmed.
28:17So Blade may be correct.
28:19There may only be one Blade, at least in the movies.
28:22On TV, it's a different story, because despite what Blade says here, there's already been
28:26another Blade.
28:27In 2006, Sticky Fingers portrayed Blade in the TV show Blade the Series.
28:31Though the series only lasted for a single 13-episode season, it was created by David
28:35S. Goyer, the man who wrote all three of Wesley Snipes' Blade films, so it had some pedigree.
28:40Still, after all the turmoil with the new Blade film, they may end up scrapping the
28:44whole thing, making Snipes the only Blade on the big screen.
28:48You're not ready to roll with this."
28:50When Deadpool and Wolverine jump through the portal provided by Cassandra from the Void,
28:54they come out on the other end in the parking lot of the place where Deadpool used to work,
28:58destroying a perfectly nice minivan in the process.
29:01It turns out, Peter, played by Rob Delaney, just sold said minivan to a family of four.
29:05And while the parents are horrified, their two boys are thrilled to see the two superheroes.
29:10Then, Deadpool hits them with this quip about Wolverine, and more specifically Hugh Jackman,
29:14they're going to make him do this till he's 90.
29:17Wolverine has plenty of staying power in the comics, games, or cartoons.
29:20After all, someone can draw Wolverine forever.
29:23But Hugh Jackman doesn't boast Wolverine's regenerative healing powers in real life.
29:27In other words, he can't keep playing Wolverine in the movies forever.
29:30At some point, something has to give, although it doesn't seem to have happened yet.
29:34He said he was retiring from playing Wolverine after Logan in 2017, explaining his body can't
29:39take much more.
29:40But then his friend Ryan Reynolds called, and suddenly he was co-starring in Deadpool
29:43and Wolverine.
29:44And now that Marvel's got him, who knows when they'll let him go?
29:48When Deadpool pulls a bait-and-switch on Wolverine at the climax of the film, instead of treating
29:52the moment with the gravity it deserves, he does what he does best — joking.
29:56I'm Marvel-Jesus, or Spock.
29:59Hard to say.
30:00As noted earlier, Deadpool refers to himself as Marvel-Jesus throughout the film, and perhaps
30:03that's why he goes into the room where a deadly energy can kill him.
30:07After all, it was either going to be Deadpool or Wolverine, and though Wolverine volunteered,
30:12Deadpool decided he needed to do it.
30:14Not because he wanted to, but because people needed him to.
30:16I am Marvel-Jesus.
30:21The more interesting piece of the quote is his reference to Spock, the Star Trek character
30:25famously played by Leonard Nimoy.
30:27Deadpool is referencing the ending of Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan, and he's doing
30:31it because Deadpool's doing the exact same thing Spock does in that movie — sacrificing
30:35himself to save everyone.
30:36In fact, Deadpool even does a Vulcan salute, just like Spock does in The Wrath of Khan,
30:41before he perishes to save the Enterprise.
30:44Despite Deadpool's pending death, at least he gets to favorably compare himself to an
30:47iconic character.
