00:00We begin with a change at quarterback in the National
00:06Football League and a bit of a surprise to some degree as the
00:09New York Giants, to nobody's surprise, have decided that
00:12Daniel Jones is going to ride the bench. Most likely it would
00:15appear for the remainder of the season and this could do it as
00:18Jones's career has been checkered to say the least in
00:22New York, but a little bit of a surprise that Tommy DeVito was
00:24actually going to be the starting quarterback for the
00:27Giants. Drew Locke has been their backup for the majority of
00:31the season, but they do go to DeVito and Jones certainly has
00:35had his fair share of fumbles and interceptions and not a lot
00:39of wins in his tenure as starting quarterback of the
00:42Giants. So Thanksgiving day, we get Cooper Rush against Tommy
00:45DeVito. It's coming up next Thursday, one week from
00:47Thursday. All right. Last night, if you went to bed and turned
00:51off the Sunday night football game between the Bengals and
00:53Chargers, you made a bit of a mistake because the Chargers up
00:56three touchdowns, let the Bengals come all the way back,
00:58or should I say Joe Burrow brought them all the way back.
01:01Chargers ended up winning this one by a final of 34 to 17. They
01:04do cover the spread and this game flies way over the total
01:07under betters at the half. Probably felt like they were in
01:09good shape, but nonetheless, Bengals with a huge game from
01:12Joe Burrow, Chargers with a nice game from from Justin Herbert,
01:17of course, and there's no question at this point, the
01:19Chargers look like a completely different team. Remember the
01:21Chargers were that team in the past that would go up big and
01:24blow leads, but that did not happen yesterday. In fact, Jim
01:28Harbaugh, the head coach, supremely excited after the
01:31game saying, essentially, the team never gave up and emotions
01:35were running high. Great win. Great team win. It was, it was
01:44awesome. Just because we lost the momentum didn't mean they
01:46had it and we're going to, we're going to get it back. You guys
01:51just don't, you know, didn't flinch, didn't buckle, didn't
01:55even stumble. Just, just kept right at it and responded. Oh,
02:00it says, it says a lot. They were, it was like two, two
02:06heavyweights, you know, going at it. I mean, they're, they're a
02:08great football team and like I said, our guys just, just kept
02:15playing, just kept playing and you know, just, just been
02:20having this feeling really since the beginning, you know,
02:24back in, back in April, May, June, that we got the right guys
02:29at the right time and that's all a coach can ask for and just
02:34keep, keep building. That's, that's what I thought.
02:42Harbaugh's done a fantastic job first year as coach of the
02:46Chargers. Meanwhile, the Bengals are getting an MVP performance
02:50week after week from Joe Burrow and just not getting wins.
02:55Burrow after the game, dejected to say the least.
02:58We are where we're at. I'm not happy with where we're at. I
03:01don't think anybody is, but all you can do is, is come back
03:08tomorrow and try to get better.
03:10Has this been the most frustrating season for the Bengals?
03:12Yeah.
03:13Why?
03:15Pretty self-explanatory. I just think it was a tough loss.
03:20First half didn't go our way. We fought back, had our
03:23opportunities to, to seal the deal and we didn't.
03:27Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills keep on rolling. They beat the
03:31Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City no longer undefeated. The lone
03:35remaining team in the NFL. So the 1972 Dolphins, only team in
03:39history to be perfect. Bills were two and a half point
03:41favorites. An iconic moment you would say for Josh Allen, not
03:47running out on the field, but running into the end zone at the
03:50end of the game, running through players. The defense did a good
03:53enough job against Patrick Mahomes and company. After the
03:56game, a lot of discussion as to whether or not this was a
03:58signature win for Buffalo or if the game means more, but Josh
04:03Allen dodged all that.
04:04Means we have to nine wins. I know it's a, from perception
04:08outside, outside perception, it's a, a really big game and
04:11what it means for both fan bases and the league. We're in week
04:1611, you know, we're nine and two. Last time I checked nine
04:19wins probably doesn't get you in the playoffs. So, you know,
04:22going into spy week, get to enjoy ourselves a little bit,
04:25but coming back ready, you know, a hungry team and just trying to
04:28go one to know.
04:30And on the flip side, Patrick Mahomes takes his loss against
04:34the Buffalo Bills pretty seriously, but really no
04:36hanging of the head when you're off to such a good start and
04:39only lose one game.
04:40Yeah. I mean, it can, you can use it as fuel. I mean, like I
04:44said, it's a good football team, so nothing to hang your head
04:46head on. I'm losing to them, but we feel like we can play better.
04:49So we'll get back to work and, and try to use this as a spark
04:55so that we can be a better football team in the end. And
04:57the undefeated thing was cool, but that's not our ultimate
04:59goal. So we'll keep building towards that.
05:01It's always a couple plays. I mean, like you said, the throw
05:04to Xavier, I keep that in bounds, you to touch that on
05:06that drive.
05:08Maybe the call protection wrong, get a free rusher and kind of
05:11stalls out a drive or if a play here or there, that's kind of
05:15the difference of these games that we're playing. It's not
05:17like, I mean, it's two good football teams. And today Josh
05:20makes the play and we didn't. And so all credit to them. And
05:24like I said, it's a great football team. And it's all
05:26about a couple plays here and there that changed the outcome
05:28of the game.
05:29So if those two teams are not the favorite in the AFC, the
05:32third team has to be the Pittsburgh Steelers. Stop. If
05:34you heard this one before Ravens Steelers playing a three point
05:38two point game. Yep. Happened again yesterday. Pittsburgh
05:41wins this one 18 to 16 behind six field goals in the game.
05:45Gino Smith big game for him. Seattle goes to San Francisco
05:48and wins 20 to 17 outright dog upset there and the Chicago
05:52Bears lining up for a game winning field goal against the
05:55Green Bay Packers had it blocked Packers end up winning
05:58that game. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings. Hey, I mean
06:01they're maybe not the most exciting team in the NFL to
06:03date, but they just keep on winning. Their defense is
06:05playing great eight and two on the season. Now they defeat the
06:08Titans 23 to 13 and cover that spread. Anthony Richardson
06:12returns to quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts had a really
06:15nice game 28 to 27 had a very big fourth quarter as well. The
06:20Colts season moves on the jet season. Obviously over the Rams
06:23get back to 500. They defeat the Patriots in New England 28 to
06:2722. The Rams are four and a half point favorites. So they cover
06:30there and look out for the Denver Broncos. They win
06:33yesterday behind four touchdowns from Bo Nicks. I mean who saw
06:38that one coming Broncos were only a point and a half
06:40favorite. They beat Atlanta yesterday 38 to 6. Meanwhile,
06:45the Miami Dolphins seem to be on a little bit of a run. They
06:48defeat the Las Vegas Raiders and now have won a couple of games
06:51trying to get back in playoff position 34 to 19. The final
06:55there the New Orleans Saints won their first two games lost
06:58their next seven and now have won two in a row again. They
07:01beat the Browns 35 to 14 and tonight on Monday night
07:05football boy. Do we have a bad game folks? The Battle of Texas
07:10Dallas Cowboys basically everybody hurt in this game.
07:14Take it on the Houston Texans in Houston seven point favorites
07:17in that one. Alright in college football. It's that time of the
07:19year teams start losing and you know coaches start getting
07:23fired. Temple is going to fire their head coach Stan Drayton
07:27according to published reports. The Owls are just nine and 25
07:32on the season. Excuse me in his career in the AAC. It has not
07:36been a good run for Temple. Rarely do they have a good run
07:39Oregon escapes Madison with a 16 to 13 win over the Wisconsin
07:44Badgers and the Badgers are going to fire their offensive
07:48coordinator after that performance. So more bad news
07:52for the folks and fans in Wisconsin as Phil Longo is out
07:56as OC Georgia beats Tennessee 31 to 17. The Gators upset LSU
08:0127 to 16 and BYU finally lost the game. That line did look
08:05weird folks at the beginning of the week. Very short favorite.
08:10They lose to Kansas 17 to 13 in the NBA. The streak that just
08:15keeps going. I mean this is really surprising at this point.
08:18The Cleveland Cavaliers are not just the best team in the NBA.
08:21They've won 15 games in a row to start the season 128 to 114
08:26incredible start for them as they beat the Hornets. Zach
08:29Edie, unfortunately suffers a injury in a win versus the
08:32Nuggets for Memphis. Julius Randall has a buzzer beater to
08:36lead the Timberwolves to a 120 to 117 win over the Suns and
08:40those of you who loved watching inside the NBA on TNT for so
08:44many years that show announced it is moving over to ESPN.
08:48Welcome back. We got Pat Evans in the house here on this
08:50Monday from Legal Sports Report. We'll actually touch on
08:53a sports betting taxes cut, which we have not talked about
08:57at all this year in sports betting. So that'll be
08:59interesting. Let's bring in Pat Pat. Welcome back to Newswire.
09:02Great to have you here on the show as we start off another
09:04week and what's going on here in Texas? I mean, are we
09:07supposed to be moving more progressive toward the
09:10possibility of having sports betting become legal? Meanwhile,
09:13it seems like they're removing some things for the equation.
09:15Tell us more. Well, yeah, so the the Kickapoo Tribe we can
09:19break down kind of what's happening on the sports betting
09:22iGaming legislative side in a minute, but we'll get to the
09:25meat of the story here, which is the Kickapoo Tribe sent a
09:28letter to a Senate committee saying, hey, you guys gotta
09:32really reel in these lottery courier services. They argue
09:38you know you can have these couriers that you know sell a
09:40ticket and you can they can take the ticket to the house or
09:43whatever, but instead the Texas lottery has rolled out actual
09:47you know online lottery systems, which this tribe kind
09:51of suggests looks a lot like slot machines, you know from
09:57the apps you know they call out DraftKings acquiring one.
10:02Well, they didn't they didn't spell out DraftKings, but they
10:04said a major sports betting operator has acquired one of
10:06these courier services, which would be DraftKings and Jack
10:09Pocket to kind of secure a market and they argue this is
10:13unregulated gambling an unregulated gambling expansion
10:17that it kind of infringes on their tribal rights for their
10:20bingo rooms and the offerings that they're allowed to have
10:24there and it's not and it was not an implicit. We're gonna
10:29launch our own thing or expand our own casinos, but it was
10:32kind of underlying in this letter of hey, if you're gonna
10:35let this go unchecked, we might you know kind of progress and
10:38do our own thing, but perhaps whether it's a casino like a
10:42full blown casino on their tribal land, perhaps online
10:46sports betting, perhaps online gambling much like you guys
10:50have in Florida through that kind of method. So it's an
10:53interesting move and you're seeing kind of more and more
10:56you know we can point to California where the tribes are
10:59really kind of trying to round up the right way to do it for
11:03sports betting and protect their gaming interests. And
11:07this is what Kickapoo is doing here in Texas is saying. Hey,
11:10we've got gaming you guys are infringing on it by having this
11:13expansion that has not been you know legalized explicitly. So
11:18that's where that's at that the we'll kind of readdress Texas
11:22here in the sports betting realm. It's not gonna happen
11:26this year, maybe 2027 when a new governorship and kind of
11:30party platform of the Republicans is created right
11:33now. The Republican platform is pretty anti gaming, especially
11:37Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who leads the Senate.
11:40He's said there's no traction at all. He might leave if he's
11:44somehow pointed to the Trump administration, but even so his
11:48successor would also be anti gaming so very you know tough
11:53road here in 2025 and they only meet every other year. So in
11:57terms of gaming expansion, you know we've got Jerry Jones and
12:00Mark Cuban very excited about it very you know lobbying to to
12:04get it done whether it is sports betting or Cuban wants
12:08you know the tourism of a casino resort. Yeah, Texas is
12:13just a really interesting thing and now you've got another
12:15party coming in with the tribal aspect saying, hey, let's
12:19figure something out and make this you know the right way
12:22versus just kind of letting things happen. Yeah. Yeah.
12:25Hopefully this year we'll we'll find some story of some state
12:29getting their act together and getting this going. Meanwhile.
12:31Alright. This was a surprise to see that we're gonna be
12:33talking about this state actually cutting sports betting
12:36taxes Pat. I mean around the country. This was our story
12:39here in 2024 was every state saying we're not getting enough
12:43money via sports betting taxes. Let's hike it up Ohio
12:47going down here. How's that happen? I know that's a really
12:50interesting kind of dynamic here because Ohio is one of
12:53those states that came back and said, hey, we need to make
12:56more money from sports betting less than 6 months after they
13:00launched the governor signed this 10% hike to Texas. It
13:05initially started at 10%. The governor signed into a budget
13:09with a budget line item that said, nope, let's get it up to
13:1220% and then now we've got a bill in a in a lame duck
13:17session that says, whoa, that was premature. Let's get it
13:20back to 10%. It's actually one of the main sports betting
13:23sponsors that originally passed it and you know we'll see if
13:28there's any any traction. There was a gaming study that a bunch
13:33of legislators turned in this summer that also said the the
13:37tax hike was premature. so you know there are definitely
13:42parts of the legislator who say, no, let's get this done.
13:45Let's bring it back and and see where we can, you know
13:48appropriately raise it in the future rather than just kind of
13:51willy nilly doing it. But yeah to your point, you know,
13:54whether it's this year or next year, there's this tax level
13:59has been a huge discussion point in the sports betting
14:03industry. You know we we've had Illinois also pass a tiered
14:10system that goes 20% to 40% depending on the revenue
14:13levels of the operators and that's up from their 15%.
14:17Initially, you've had a couple other states introduced stuff.
14:19We're talking right now a Louisiana bill that was just
14:23introduced. It has been withdrawn now, but it jumped it
14:28from 15% to 51% to equal New York, which is kind of crazy.
14:34Even when you're listening to the discussion points, you
14:37know they were like listen the population in New York can
14:39sustain that that's fine. Louisiana has nothing like
14:42that. We can't do that. The sponsor he did to his credit
14:45and and in the committee here in the first committee hearing
14:47of his bill said alright. I'm hearing a lot of pushback. I'm
14:50going to withdraw this. I'm going to listen to the
14:52feedback. We're going to work on this. We're going to make it
14:54a little bit better. So I do think at some point you'll see
14:57another bill probably next year in Louisiana that will raise a
15:00tax probably not to 51%, but raise it up a little bit
15:05because they feel like they're getting a little short changed
15:07with how how rapidly it's taken off. So yeah, I mean taxes
15:12huge issue in sports betting, you know and then you get the
15:15arguments about competitiveness and everything
15:17else like that. So it's something that legislators
15:20regulators sports books are obviously going to keep an eye
15:23on and and it will be kind of a shifting you know market here
15:27in the next year or two. Yeah, and you know it's a really good
15:31point. Not every state has the kind of market cap like New
15:34York hard to you know sort of convince people in Louisiana.
15:37They gotta be the same as the population in New York. That's
15:40actually a really good point with the taxes. Alright. so up
15:44in Canada, our friends are getting tired of seeing sports
15:47betting ads. That's gotta be clear here and I do wonder Pat
15:50if they are able to come up with some gambling advertising
15:54framework, whether that will trickle down here to the United
15:57States because again, you know just like in Canada. I mean I
16:01don't mind the ads, but I'm sure you know we are getting
16:03bombarded each and every Saturday and Sunday with them
16:05on TV radio and everywhere else. Yeah. This this bill has
16:09been in the works since you know last year. It's been a
16:12legislator came in and said, Hey, there's way too many ads
16:15since it's launched in 2022 and you know that's a sentiment
16:20you hear in a lot of markets that have gone live. We heard
16:23it. I heard it here in Michigan for a little while, but after
16:25a while, it kind of subdues so this is there's no specifics to
16:28this framework. Now it's just saying hey, let's get a
16:30framework that the entire country media ecosystem and
16:34sports betting ecosystem has to follow and they can work on
16:39creating it later. A couple things of note. I want to read
16:42them here. You know a research group said that out of 28000
16:46ads reviewed this year only 189 were gambling related and
16:50that's down from 442 in 2022 when it launched so I mean even
16:56in 2022, that's not a huge percentage of ads. You just
16:58have to think about where those ads are being played and when
17:01you're seeing them probably during sporting sporting
17:03events for the most part. so that's where you see them.
17:05That's where it kind of gets in your head and and and takes
17:08over, but there's already a framework in in the works with
17:13the Canadian Gaming Association and a nonprofit called ad
17:16standards that they say everybody's going to follow. So
17:19even if this legislation doesn't pass, it does seem like
17:21there will be some sort of industry framework that kind of
17:24helps keep you know guardrails up and and make sure everybody
17:28is happy about the advertising. you know glut. Alright, Pat
17:33you back with us this week or this year alone appearance of
17:35the week. I think this is my own appearance this week, but
17:37I'll be back soon. Alright. Well, I will see you next week.
17:40Hopefully before Thanksgiving. Thanks again for coming on.
17:43Bye Craig.
