00:00Good morning, my name is Phil Hewitt, group arts editor at Sussex Newspapers.
00:06Lovely this morning to speak to Julie Edwards.
00:08Now a really exciting project, a new art gallery in Worthing.
00:12Sabotage, it's called.
00:13Julie, what's it all about?
00:14What are you setting up?
00:15What are you setting out to do?
00:17Well, we are setting out to bring some counterculture or some new urban art into Worthing.
00:25Worthing has a really, really thriving art scene.
00:29But we've thought we've found a gap where it's missing some of the more modern
00:34or some pop culture or sort of urban art that's sort of a big part of the art scene in Sussex,
00:40but it's not really in Worthing.
00:42So we thought we'd open up something that sort of displays this art.
00:45And it's the three of you together and that's the linking thing, isn't it?
00:49And how brave are you being in setting up a gallery?
00:52I mean, times are quite tough.
00:55It is very tough.
00:58We were very aware of this as we were doing it.
01:03Everybody has to look after essentials.
01:05And, of course, hanging art or objects in your house or in your home is not really an essential.
01:13But at the same time, for artists and for us and for, I guess, for some people,
01:21it's what makes us human.
01:24It's what brings our life together.
01:26It's having something that brings those emotions to us.
01:29Yeah.
01:30So that's what we did.
01:32You've made an encouraging start then with the gallery since you opened.
01:38It's been really well received.
01:40We had an opening party that was very well attended, shockingly well attended, actually.
01:46And since then, we've had a steady stream of clients, a steady stream of people visiting.
01:52We're getting some really good feedback.
01:55We're already having to change some displays because the art is moving on.
01:59But that will be our sort of way of working anyway.
02:03You sort of come in two weeks on the trot and you probably won't see all the same pieces of art.
02:08We want to keep it moving.
02:09We want to keep it evolving.
02:10And we want people to sort of make it a regular stopping point.
02:14Brilliant.
02:15Yeah, of course.
02:16Congratulations on the good, steady, promising start so far and good luck with the future.
02:20Lovely to speak to you, Judy.
02:22Thank you very much.
02:23Thank you very much, Phil.
