Every week, The Drive with Clint Stoerner and Ron Hughley take Texans stock. Whose stock is up, whose stock is down?
Transcript
00:00It's time to buy or sell.
00:02It's time to sell!
00:04It's Texan Stock Up, Stock Down on the Drive with Sterner and Hughley.
00:10I'm going to pump those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers in this racket.
00:14The bell again.
00:16I love this damn bell. I know you do.
00:18That's right. It's Stock Up, Stock Down, Texan style.
00:22Do it every Wednesday here on the Drive with Sterner and Hughley.
00:25Right around 3.20, 3.25pm.
00:28It is simple. It's where we take a peek into the Texans market of sorts.
00:32Then Ron and Clint are going to tell you which Texans they're buying stock in,
00:36the ones they're liking, what they see,
00:38and what Texans players, if any, that stock is plummeting.
00:42And it's not looking good on the film and otherwise.
00:44So, let's get it rolling.
00:46We're in our Wolf of Wall Street here.
00:49Texan Stock Up.
00:52Let's start with some positivity in the spirit of D'Amico Ryans, the Texans head coach.
00:56Positivity. Week 11 Texan Stock Up.
00:59We're on the show, Hughley.
01:01Tell me what or who or which Texans players you are buying stock in heading into week 11.
01:07Thank you. It's just Ron.
01:09I want to say Jarrett Patterson.
01:13I say that because, listen,
01:18this offensive line has been historic in how bad they have been when it comes to pass protection.
01:25The last several weeks.
01:27It started with the Packer game, which was bad.
01:31Got worse with the Colts.
01:33It got bad to the tune of 8 sacks and 11 hits with the Jets.
01:38And there was some changes.
01:40They brought him in for a drive when Kenyon Green got hurt.
01:44Probably the best drive they had all game, maybe in a couple of games.
01:48And then he started, not at guard like he did when he came in for Kenyon,
01:52but started at center.
01:53And we heard D'Amico talk about him and his communication with the Colts.
01:57We felt like it would be a thing that would be helpful.
02:00That's what he said.
02:01And they moved Juice to guard who had played there before.
02:05But with him going in at center, Clint, even though, yes, they gave up four sacks.
02:10And, I mean, it ain't, you know, great yet.
02:13Clearly the Lions had a much better offensive line.
02:17But it was much, much better.
02:19And it seemed like the communication up front was better.
02:22It didn't seem like the Lions were trying a lot of stuff.
02:27Just didn't see just gaping, just guys just coming in free and missing.
02:32And I will give credit to the center, Jarrett Patterson,
02:35as he stepped in to see this offensive line and pass protection in particular.
02:40Now, run blocking, that was rough.
02:42They took several steps back with that.
02:44But in terms of what the big problem was, pass protection, it seemed to improve.
02:49And with him stepping into the center spot, I give him credit.
02:52His stock is going up.
02:54I couldn't agree more, Ron. Jarrett Patterson's money.
02:56That's a big-time run defense.
02:58That's not just been really good and statistically good,
03:01but they're literally designed to stop the run
03:06in the way that they game plan and call plays to stop the run.
03:09And so no surprise that we didn't run the ball as well as Joe Mixon has ran the ball.
03:14But Jarrett Patterson was absolutely tremendous
03:16when it comes to the communication and giving this team a better chance to win,
03:22play in, play out, whether it was run or pass.
03:25And so I agree with him in that.
03:27Him being – and we'll see how they fare against a better defensive front,
03:32but him getting in there and communicating better and being more reliable,
03:37that is definite stock up for Jarrett Patterson.
03:40I love it.
03:41There you go.
03:42Ronald Hughley rolling with the big man Patterson for his stock up.
03:47Let's get the former NFL quarterback stock up here for the Houston Texans
03:52as they prepare for Week 11 Monday Night Football in Dallas.
03:55Dirty Red Clint Starner, which Texans, if any, are you buying stock in right now?
04:01John Mechie.
04:02Yeah.
04:03John Mechie for me.
04:04Oh, yeah.
04:06I mean, looking really good when the opportunity was given to him,
04:12whether you're talking about late in the preseason when he ended on a strong note,
04:16or you're talking about, you know, the last handful of games
04:20where the Texans have been without Nico, without Diggs,
04:22and they've had to depend on John Mechie.
04:24I think John Mechie, whether he's catching the football
04:26or CJ missed him a couple of times, depending on what game you're watching,
04:29he is winning at all levels of the field.
04:31He's winning in the red zone.
04:33He's winning in the quick game on critical drives.
04:35He appears to be very quarterback friendly from that perspective.
04:40And so John Mechie for me, we've gone from I don't think he's ready,
04:45I don't know if he can play at this level.
04:47And I mean play.
04:48He could be on a roster.
04:49I mean, I don't know if he could be a difference maker at the NFL level.
04:53I've gone from that to watching this dude play,
04:56and last week it all came to a head for me Sunday night
04:59where I believe John Mechie is a good fill-in,
05:04I don't mean good, like a really good fill-in
05:07for the No. 3 receiver with the Houston Texans.
05:11Yeah, let's see if he can continue to maybe put some more together.
05:15Yeah, yeah.
05:16That's the key.
05:17Can he come out and do it again?
05:18Because he's going to get the opportunities.
05:19Mm-hmm.
05:20He's going to get the opportunities.
05:21All right, Patterson and John Mechie,
05:23those are your stock ups for the Houston Texans right now.
05:26According to Clint Sterner and we're on the show hugely.
05:28Thank you for just tuning in.
05:29This is The Drive with Sterner and Hughley.
05:31It's Texans stock up and stock down for week 11.
05:35And let's stick with you, Dirty Red, right here.
05:38Okay.
05:39I want to hear now maybe these Texan are these Texans
05:43that just ain't living up to stock down for the Houston Texans right now.
05:49Well, for me it's Titus Howard.
05:51And, you know, not to pile on Titus.
05:54Strip sacking his own quarterback?
05:56I mean, that's just the cherry on top, right?
05:58But the reality of it is, Ron, if you remember correctly,
06:01last week before the Sunday night game,
06:03one of my takeaways on Tape Drop Tuesday was, yes,
06:07there are guys getting beat in pass protection that have to be corrected.
06:10But for some reason, Titus Howard is so soft at the tackle position,
06:14just allowing the DNs to push him into the lap of the quarterback,
06:17that it's shrinking the pocket.
06:19So the level of let's just call it a technique and a fundamental.
06:24Like whatever he was trying to execute there
06:28was allowing defensive linemen to push him into the lap.
06:30So I was worried about Titus Howard before all this went down.
06:34And then this week when I watched Titus Howard, it's multiple times.
06:37It's not just when he's trying to strip the quarterback and he quit on that play.
06:41But the level of quit, the inability to strain,
06:45and when I say strain, try to move mass regardless,
06:49frontside, backside, pulling, blocking down, doesn't matter to me.
06:53Your job, like the fundamental components of your position
07:01is all about moving mass.
07:05The unwillingness or inability to do that
07:07and even try to do it on a consistent basis,
07:10for me, I'm selling my Titus Howard stock
07:13and I'm damn sure not buying any more, boys.
07:15That's laid out pretty beautifully.
07:17And I think a lot of people would agree with you
07:19on Titus Howard stock down for the Houston Texans right now.
07:22Ron?
07:23I'm seeing Titus a lot here on the team.
07:26Yeah, hands agree with Clint Sterner.
07:28Ron Hugley, Texans stock down as we head into week 11 in Dallas.
07:33Yeah, mine goes to Nick Cacerea.
07:38Ooh.
07:40I think Titus Howard, I think he can take a part in that.
07:44First time we got somebody not wearing pads.
07:47I think he can take some part in that.
07:49Even with obviously the ones like Titus or Kenyon Green
07:58or any of those others, it's more of the like,
08:01hey, you've had a lot of injuries
08:03and you got yourself in a situation where you let go of a corner
08:09and now you got to bring him back
08:11and you felt like you were short a corner
08:13when Kamari Lassiter got hurt and you're playing less then.
08:19You know, like the feelings of the people you brought in
08:23to maybe back up certain guys
08:25and the situation you're in with your offensive line
08:27and not having, you know, better places to turn
08:31when you knew that at least it was on the table
08:34that a guy like a Kenyon Green could struggle
08:36and you didn't have that really on the table
08:39as somebody to come and help the running back situation.
08:43We're sitting here and there's no real backup running back
08:45and Daria Gumboala has to be on the field
08:47and you had one in Kam
08:50and you traded him away for nothing.
08:52You didn't really make any moves to help your team at the deadline
08:57while everybody else around you
08:59felt like they were able to find a way to make moves.
09:02Right now, just with some of the important moves
09:07or lack thereof, it is not looking good.
09:11A lot of the issues that the Texans are having
09:14are personnel issues.
09:16And a lot of that comes and falls at the feet of Nick Casario.
09:20Hopefully this doesn't mean that we can't get frozen yogurt.
09:23Still might not be. Still hoping to do that.
09:26But right now, I think my stockdown goes with Nick Casario
09:30when you see a lot of the personnel problems
09:33that the Texans are facing.
