00:00A bizarre content creator called SmartSchoolboy9 is finding fame online for all the wrong reasons
00:05after internet sleuths exposed him as a grown man pretending to be a school-aged child.
00:10So is Schoolboy9 a dangerous deviant or just a misunderstood outsider?
00:15It all started when a Reddit user asked the rInstagram forum if others had noticed
00:19creepy accounts pretending to be children.
00:22This question led other wannabe detectives down a rabbit hole that left them disturbed.
00:26They found a number of Instagram accounts filled with colorful,
00:29freakishly edited visuals of school children dressed in uniforms
00:33and their daily accounts of young student life.
00:35Though the content isn't explicitly R-rated,
00:37the images have a surreal and uncanny quality that many found frightening,
00:42especially because the account bio says that they're all real kids, age 12 or 13,
00:47and that their moms run their Instagram pages.
00:50The accounts all interacted with one another,
00:52which led curious users to the account of SmartSchoolboy9.
00:56Unlike the other creepy accounts, SmartSchoolboy9's page was filled with pictures and videos
01:01of what appears to be a grown man impersonating a young schoolboy.
01:05Dressed in a similar school uniform, SmartSchoolboy9 paints his face stark white
01:10and sports exaggerated red lips and giant rabbit-like front teeth,
01:14along with round glasses and his signature pointy-heeled black boots.
01:18Like the other creepy accounts, his content has a dark and eerie quality
01:22that feels straight out of a horror movie.
01:26SmartSchoolboy9's videos show what seems to be a man cosplaying as a young tweenage student.
01:31He shows off his school uniform, he poses with his lunchbox,
01:35and talks in a high-pitched voice about his favorite subjects.
01:38His content is so unsettling, he became a cult-like figure on Reddit forum,
01:42filled with questions about his true identity.
01:44His Instagram account disappeared after being mass-reported,
01:47but people's curiosity didn't necessarily disappear with it.
01:50That's when a few YouTube documentaries emerged,
01:52made by internet users who were determined to find out who SmartSchoolboy9 is,
01:57once and for all, and if he's actually a dangerous degenerate.
02:00Amateur investigators found very little information,
02:03but were able to dig up clues from the landmarks seen throughout his videos.
02:07They eventually learned his real identity, David Alter, a 59-year-old man who lives in London.
02:12And that's one of the things people have been doing to, like,
02:14basically uncover this guy, is, like, really identify who this person could be.
02:18Though people on Reddit assumed Alter must have a criminal history,
02:21they found no evidence he had ever been arrested for any wrongdoing.
02:24But that doesn't mean he's necessarily innocent, either.
02:27One user found an unsettling letter to the editor, printed in a 1994 edition
02:32of a local London newspaper, where letter author David Alter claims to be a 13-year-old student,
02:38sharing his opinion that school uniforms are a path to discipline.
02:41So is David Alter, aka SmartSchoolboy9,
02:45a terrifying deviant or just a man with a creepy fetish?
02:48The answer's likely somewhere in between.
02:51Hordes of Reddit users want to see him punished for his content,
02:54but a small minority feels that the man, who may have mental disabilities,
02:58is merely expressing himself online and not causing any real harm.
03:02Another theory is that SmartSchoolboy9 is a creepypasta,
03:06an intentionally scary folk legend circulated around the internet.
03:09These user-generated stories are created by horror lovers
03:12and passed off as real to enhance their lore.
03:15Still, very little is known about SmartSchoolboy9,
03:18and perhaps it's best to keep it that way.
