00:29Hey, hey, Joe, look who's coming.
00:34Yeah, that's what I call a real fine-looking woman.
00:39Yeah, you mind your manners, because she's a married woman.
00:44Hi, Ms. Edwards. This is a real pleasure, ma'am.
00:47Hello, horse. Hello, little Joe.
00:49My pleasure, ma'am.
00:51Uh, little Joe, why don't you see after Ms. Edwards' horse while I help her down?
00:55Yeah, well, little brother, why don't you see after her horse while I help her down?
00:58All right.
01:06Joyce.
01:07Ben.
01:09Oh.
01:10Oh, Ben. Oh, it's so good to see you again.
01:14It's wonderful seeing you.
01:16Uh, you'll stay for supper. Adam, you remember Mrs. Edwards?
01:19Hello, Adam.
01:20I remember her.
01:22I just wasn't speaking because I was so busy looking.
01:25You Cartwrights certainly know how to please a woman.
01:27Uh, Joe, run in and tell Hopsing we'll have a guest for supper.
01:30Right, Bob.
01:31Oh, uh, Ben, I...
01:32Adam, Adam.
01:33Uh, down in the cellar by the north wall are two cases of Lafitte.
01:36Bring up a couple of bottles there.
01:37Yes, sir.
01:38Now, look, you've come all this way surely to stay for a little while.
01:41Now, we need a lady in this house.
01:43You know, I've got these three grown sons, and somebody has to teach them manners.
01:46Now, please, come here.
01:48All right.
01:51All right.
01:52But just for a little while.
02:00I wouldn't go in there if I was you, Mrs. Edwards.
02:03It's nothing, Ben.
02:04He's just our new hired hand.
02:06He must be lost.
02:08Pay no attention to him.
02:10Suit yourself, ma'am.
02:12Only Mr. Edwards ain't gonna like this.
02:14Ezekiel, you can tell Mr. Edwards anything you want to,
02:19but Mr. Cartwright is an old friend, and I'm going inside.
02:23Anything you say, ma'am.
02:28But I'll be waiting for you.
02:49I'll be waiting for you.
03:20Your house is so attractive, Ben.
03:22It gets nicer with the years.
03:25It's been years since you've been in this house, Joyce.
03:27Yes, I know.
03:29I've missed seeing it.
03:32I've missed seeing you.
03:35All of us have.
03:40How's Tom?
03:43Oh, all right.
03:45Oh, all right.
03:51Just all right?
04:00How is he, really?
04:03He's still bitter.
04:05He's been bitter ever since the accident.
04:10All day long, he just follows me around in his wheelchair.
04:14And every night, in front of Ezekiel, he calls me names.
04:19He says the most awful things.
04:22Ezekiel, that man outside, the hired hand?
04:26He's more than just that.
04:30Tom spends half the night drinking and gambling with his hired hand.
04:33Drinking and gambling? I thought the accident left him incapacitated.
04:37Only from the waist down.
04:40Tom drinks himself into a stupor.
04:44And Ezekiel carries him upstairs.
04:48He never knocks.
04:50He just brings him right into the room.
04:53And he puts him down on the bed next to me.
04:57And he straightens up.
04:59And he looks at me, lying there.
05:02And he says,
05:04And he says,
05:06Good night, Mrs. Edwards.
05:08And goes.
05:10Every night, it's this.
05:12But last night...
05:18Usually, Tom can't turn over.
05:20But somehow, last night, he managed to.
05:24I woke up.
05:26And I saw him bending over me.
05:28With a carving knife in his hand.
05:31He didn't move. He just...
05:33He just sort of smiled at me.
05:37He was so beautiful.
05:40I can't bear to think of my going first.
05:43Joyce, surely you must know Tom meant no harm.
05:47I don't know.
05:49He's always talking about death.
05:51His death. My death.
05:56I, uh... I've got to go.
05:58Joyce, please, stay.
06:01I can't, Ben.
06:03Oh, Tom will be all right.
06:09If only he could find something to do to take his mind off himself.
06:13He...
06:15Oh, I've got to go.
06:27Lohas, would you get Mrs. Edwards to us, please?
06:30All right, Lohas.
06:33Joyce.
06:35I don't like the idea of his following you.
06:37It's all right, Ben. He'll keep his distance.
06:42I'll ride along partway with you.
06:45All right.
06:51Here you are, Mrs. Edwards.
06:52Thank you, Lohas.
07:20Yeah, well, I heard once it was Pa's gun that hit him.
07:22Well, that's a lie.
07:24Eat your supper, both of you, and stop talking about it.
07:26Look, I didn't mean he hit him on purpose.
07:28I mean he hit him accidental.
07:29Well, that's two lies.
07:31That's not what they say in town.
07:33Well, that's Mr. Edwards, Joe.
07:35Sure he blames Pa. He claims he crippled him.
07:37Well, did he or didn't he?
07:39He did not.
07:41Yeah, well, how do you know? You weren't even there.
07:43I was there an hour later.
07:45They were out after Wild Mountain Sheep.
07:48Mr. Edwards slipped and fell to a ledge, and Pa risked his life trying to save him.
07:51Ain't that right, Adam?
07:52They were climbing up off that ledge when they fell to another ledge,
07:55and that's when the gun went off, getting him in the spine.
07:57Whose gun?
07:58Mr. Edwards' gun.
08:00All right, then why does he blame Pa?
08:05Eat your supper. It's getting cold.
08:13Boys.
08:14I'm sorry I opened the wine, Pa.
08:16I didn't know she was leaving so soon.
08:18Well, we haven't had any of this since Christmas.
08:23Yeah, it's a miracle.
08:25I've been imprisoned in this bottle for 20 years,
08:28and each year it seems to grow better.
08:30Yeah, well, I'm sorry Miss Edwards couldn't make the dinner tonight,
08:33but I'm sure glad to be taking part of this wine.
08:35Me too.
08:37Boys, I need your help.
08:40What do you think Tom Edwards could do?
08:45What do you mean, Pa?
08:47Well, they're out of money.
08:50He's squandered everything they ever had.
08:53They owe everybody, and he's always gambling.
08:56That Zeke fellow, does he live with them?
09:00I'm sorry, Pa, I wouldn't want you to talk with your mouth full.
09:04He not only lives with them, but they owe him too.
09:07Well, what about Virginia City? Maybe he could clerk somewhere.
09:10You ever talk with him?
09:12Every time he opens his mouth, it's like poison poured out.
09:15Hoss, this was once a wonderful man, but he was struck down.
09:18Life struck him down.
09:19Pa, I didn't mean to offend you.
09:21They have a pretty good flow of water on their place, haven't they?
09:24Who are we to say that if we were struck down, we wouldn't be pouring out poison too?
09:29Now, what were you saying about water?
09:31Oh, well, I was thinking that if there's no mill around,
09:34and they have a pretty good stream there, we could rig up a water wheel,
09:39build a small millhouse, they could grind grain.
09:42That's a wonderful idea.
09:45A wonderful idea!
09:47Adam, I want to drink a toast to you.
09:49Hey, Pa, can we drink to him too? He's a mighty bright fellow.
09:52Downright bright, and a real pride and joy to the Cartwrights.
09:55Well, thank you, gentlemen.
10:19Take care of my horse.
10:21Anything you say, Mrs. Edwards.
10:30Well, did you have a pleasant ride?
10:33Yes.
10:34I hope so.
10:36At least that will compensate a little for all that you have to put up with.
10:44Darling, I know it's dreadful of me to make such a fuss when you go out,
10:49but you have no idea how awful it is for me to sit here alone without you.
10:57Let me kiss you.
11:06Your skin is so lovely.
11:08Your cheeks are pink.
11:13Kiss?
11:16I'm awfully tired. I think I'll go up to bed.
11:20You told me where you've been.
11:23I, uh, went to see the Cartwrights.
11:30Why?
11:32To complain about your husband?
11:34Tom, please don't start that again.
11:36I love you. I'll never leave you. You know that.
11:40I expect Ben received you very warmly, didn't he?
11:43Did you get any money out of him?
11:45Tom, please.
11:47He's very rich. You're very attractive. We need money.
11:51Yes, I did go about money.
11:53You know that property that my father left me in San Francisco?
11:57Well, Ben sometimes goes to San Francisco, and I thought that he might sell it for me.
12:09Darling, what about that property your father left you in San Francisco?
12:14What do you mean?
12:15Five acres. That should be worth quite a lot, wouldn't it, Ezekiel?
12:19Now, Mr. Edwards, you don't want to go gambling your wife's good land.
12:22Oh, no. I'm doing it for her.
12:25How's that, Miss Edwards?
12:27Well, she hates you. This way she could get rid of you.
12:32Now, Miss Edwards, you don't want to get rid of me, close as I've been to your husband.
12:37How would that get rid of him?
12:39I'd bet the whole five acres against all we owe Ezekiel.
12:42If he loses, then we don't owe him anything, and he clears out.
12:48Go ahead.
12:51Bet the land.
12:54You surprise me, Mr. Edwards.
12:57You think I stay with you just for money?
12:59You think I take care of you?
13:01You think I carry you up them stairs night after night and put you to bed just for money?
13:06Now, believe you me, Mr. Edwards, I know I ain't fit to tie your shoe,
13:11but just living with you, sir, and Miss Edwards here,
13:14I've grown to you too like it was home almost.
13:17No, sir, no offense, man, but I can't take that bet.
13:21All right, all right.
13:24Play for $5.
13:28Will you lend me $5?
13:37You did give me a scare, Miss Edwards.
13:40I thought I was gonna lose my home.
13:43Good night, Miss Edwards.
14:07Morning, Tom.
14:09What brings you around?
14:11Well, I was riding into town.
14:14I thought I'd drop by.
14:17To see me? To see my wife?
14:20To see you both, Tom.
14:23Sit on the porch if you want to.
14:25She's picking grapes.
14:27Good morning, Mr. Cartwright.
14:30Yeah, that's a...
14:32It's a mighty fine stream you have here on the property.
14:36I hear my wife paid you a little visit yesterday.
14:40It was good to see her.
14:42Good to see you, Tom.
14:44Is it?
14:46Tom, I'll be straight-out honest with you.
14:48I made a definite point of stopping by here this morning.
14:51I have a little business proposition I'd like to discuss with you.
14:54I've got a little business proposition I'd like to discuss with you.
14:57How would you like to make some good money?
15:00There ain't much Mr. Edwards can do,
15:02ailing chronic the way he is.
15:04Tom, I want to build something on your property.
15:09A money-making operation.
15:11When I get my money out, plus 15%,
15:15then it's yours to own.
15:17Did you hear that?
15:19My wife goes to see my best friend,
15:21and suddenly I'm in business. I'm rich.
15:23What's the proposition, Mr. Cartwright?
15:25A mill. A grain mill.
15:28Now, there's none around here for miles,
15:30and people around here need a mill.
15:32Now, you have the water.
15:34I have a son who knows how to put that water to work.
15:36What are you doing? Trying to get something from me?
15:39Tom, I said this is a business proposition.
15:41Now, I'll put up the money,
15:43and my sons and I will build that mill for you.
15:45What do you get, Mr. Cartwright?
15:47Water rights forever?
15:49I've already said what I want.
15:51My investment back, plus 15%.
15:55If I have that, I'm satisfied.
15:57You mean...
16:03Hmm.
16:05That sounds pretty good.
16:07Not to me, it don't.
16:09Would you be good enough to let Mr. Edwards
16:11make his own deal of the mill?
16:13No.
16:16Would you be good enough to let Mr. Edwards
16:18make his own deal if he so sees fit?
16:20Of course, sir. Excuse me, excuse me.
16:22Never mind, Zeke, Ben. We've been thrown together so much,
16:24we're almost like partners.
16:26My only thought, sir, is for Mr. Edwards.
16:29That's enough, Zeke. Now, you keep out of this.
16:31Mr. Edwards, we'd have all those people coming around,
16:33all that excitement.
16:35You don't hardly sleep nights, as it is.
16:37Tom, what do you say?
16:40Have we an agreement, or haven't we?
16:4415%, huh?
16:4615%. You shake on that, we'll have that mill up in a week.
16:49You make it 10%?
16:51No.
16:5312 1⁄2?
16:5512 1⁄2.
16:57I'm mighty glad, Tom.
16:59Boy, that mill will be a great thing for everybody.
17:01What do you think of that, Ezekiel? Wait till I tell Joyce.
17:03Well, all right, Tom. Let's be getting on at the town.
17:06Oh, say, we can start bringing the stuff in tomorrow,
17:08if that's all right.
17:10Oh, do that. You do that, Ben.
17:13We'll be friends again.
17:16Let me tell you, Ben, in my heart,
17:19when I'm not in pain, I mean,
17:21in my heart, I never blame you.
17:23It was my gun, my fault.
17:26Bless you for coming.
17:29Goodbye tomorrow, Tom.
17:31Fine, Ben.
17:33Thought you owned me, didn't you?
17:35Thought I couldn't even get up to bed without you, huh?
17:38I'll show you.
17:40I'll take you to your wife, Mr. Edwards.
17:42Would you like to go pick grapes with your wife?
17:44I'll make me so much money, I'll hire me a nurse from San Francisco.
17:47I'll show you.
17:49I'll take you to your wife, Mr. Edwards.
17:51Would you like to go pick grapes with your wife?
17:53I'll make me so much money, I'll hire me a nurse from San Francisco.
17:56I'll make me so much money, I'll hire me a nurse from San Francisco.
17:59It'll be a real one, too, not just somebody like you.
18:01I wouldn't get excited, Mr. Edwards.
18:03You're gonna have another bad night.
18:05You hope I have another bad night, isn't that it?
18:07You hope I'll have to call for you.
18:09Where are you taking me?
18:11To your wife, Mr. Edwards. I'm gonna take you to your wife.
18:13You forget about my wife, you hear me?
18:15You get her right out of your head!
18:21Take me back in the house.
18:23Yes, sir.
18:32Ben!
18:34Joyce!
18:37Ben!
18:39Oh, how wonderful to see you.
18:41Does Tom know you're here?
18:43Yes, I just talked to him.
18:45I think I have some very good news for you.
18:47I suggested to Tom that we build a gristmill here and that he run it.
18:51What did he say?
18:53He's all for it. He likes the idea.
18:55Oh, Ben!
18:57Oh, I'm so happy.
18:59If only this could make Tom happy, too.
19:02Remember the way he used to be?
19:05I'll help you pick some grapes.
19:11Ben...
19:14What you're doing is the most wonderful thing anyone could do for us.
19:18Now, wait a minute. You're forgetting I'm making a profit, too.
19:22I know what you're doing.
19:32Ben, about...
19:34About yesterday...
19:36I've...
19:38I've never complained to you before, have I?
19:41I've never complained to anyone.
19:43But all these years...
19:45I've been dying, too.
19:49I know, Jess.
19:51Sometimes I think it would have been better for him if I'd left him.
19:54My health, my...
19:56Just the sight of me seems to infuriate him at times.
20:00Just the sheer sight of me.
20:02Just...
20:04Just your beauty.
20:07Oh, Ben.
20:09I forgot about that a long time ago.
20:11He's a cripple.
20:14And I'm a cripple, too.
20:17How are you a cripple?
20:19Because I don't stand up to him.
20:21Because I take every terrible thing he says to me.
20:25Sometimes he...
20:27He eyes me like a stranger would.
20:29He says things he shouldn't.
20:31This may all come to an end.
20:33You know, he was so happy when I left him.
20:35I think the mill may change everything.
20:37Oh, I hope so.
20:39It's got to be a fine mill.
20:41You know, Adam's very clever with that sort of thing.
20:43He's made some wonderful drawings.
20:45You're so fortunate in your boys.
20:49Three fine sons.
20:51They could be half your life.
20:53Only half.
20:55Sons can't be everything.
21:03Did you notice how blue the mountains were this morning?
21:06Yes, I...
21:08I saw them.
21:24Well, it's starting to look very good.
21:26Coming along fine, Pa.
21:28Hey, Pa, when's Hoss going to get here with those millstones?
21:30Should be real soon.
21:32Well, we'll be ready for him any time now.
21:34That's fine.
21:38Oh, Zekew.
21:40Glad to see you pitching in.
21:42I wouldn't want to give you any wrong notions,
21:44Mr. Cartwright.
21:46I'm just doing this to please Mr. Edwards.
21:48I still don't think any good's going to come of it.
21:50Well, why don't you give it a chance?
21:52Why, I'll give it a chance.
21:54I'm just wondering one thing.
21:56What's really in this for you, Mr. Cartwright?
22:00Hey, Pa.
22:02Hey, Pa.
22:04Pa, send me in some more nails, will you?
22:06Yeah, coming right up.
22:12But it looks so complicated.
22:14How did you ever figure it out?
22:16Well, it's really not original.
22:18The design is actually a combination.
22:20Some of it comes from the old New England mills,
22:22and some comes from the wheels
22:24that the miners built here in Nevada.
22:26As you see, we've built a flume
22:28leading to the top of the wheel.
22:30At the proper time, we'll divert the water
22:32back through the flume.
22:34It'll pass over the top of the wheel,
22:36striking the blades, which will turn the wheel,
22:38which will drive the shaft,
22:40which will turn the upper millstone,
22:42and presto, you're grinding wheat.
22:44It's really quite simple.
22:46Oh, Adam, I think you're absolutely marvelous.
22:48Well, actually, the idea is thousands of years old,
22:50but imagine what it meant to man before the steam age.
22:52The horse should be here soon with the millstones,
22:54which reminds me, I'd better see our little Joes coming along.
22:56Oh, and I'd better see about Tom.
22:58What?
23:02That's a mighty pretty assistant you got there.
23:04Meaning what?
23:08Oh, you're a sly one.
23:10I was watching you, standing close,
23:12bending over, sniffing her hair.
23:14I know you bright boys.
23:16How would you like to shut your filthy face, huh?
23:18Well, I'm just doing you a favor, friend.
23:20Don't let her husband catch you.
23:22He's still handy with a rifle.
23:24Ezekiel!
23:26Ezekiel!
23:28Come get me!
23:30Excuse me, Professor.
23:32I was so busy watching you and Mrs. Edwards,
23:34I forgot all about her husband.
23:40I don't know what you're up to,
23:42but don't make any trouble for Mrs. Edwards.
23:52That's about time you got here, Professor.
23:54Did some of the heavy work.
23:56Don't call me that.
23:58What's the matter with you?
24:00Just don't call me Professor.
24:02Here, let me get that.
24:04I'm perfectly capable of doing this myself.
24:06Anything you say, ma'am.
24:08Wheel me down there. I want to see how things are going.
24:10Yes, sir.
24:12You think it'd be all right?
24:14All right? Why shouldn't it be all right? Come on.
24:16I mean, the ground's so rough,
24:18your leg's being so weak.
24:20Must you always remind him of that?
24:22I didn't mean no harm, ma'am.
24:24I was just thinking.
24:26Come on! Come on!
24:32You know, Adam, I gotta hand it to you.
24:34I think this thing's gonna work.
24:36Thanks.
24:38I, uh, I'm sorry about blowing off
24:40all that steam a while ago.
24:42Yeah, well, that's all right.
24:44I'm used to taking all the guff around this family.
24:46That's what I'm here for.
24:48Oh, sure. You're really abused, aren't you?
24:50I'll take a look up there.
24:52See what I mean?
24:56Got it?
24:58Yeah, why don't you get some light wood?
25:00Well, Ben, you're really making progress.
25:02Moving right along, Tom.
25:04Any reason why I can't be of some help?
25:06Why, not at all.
25:08As a matter of fact,
25:10I think I've got the very thing for you.
25:12Ezekiel, move this chair in closer to the wheel.
25:14You see these binder rods?
25:16Yeah.
25:18Keep tightening.
25:20Now, here's a wrench. Get to work.
25:22Fine.
25:24Oh, Adam, isn't it wonderful
25:26to see Tom working again?
25:28Sure is.
25:30What's the matter?
25:32I just think you have the most wonderful father.
25:34W alarm, folks!
25:36Just a signal!
25:38Signal for what?
25:40The arrival! Look to the east!
25:42Horse Cartwright, charioteer.
25:44Charging up with a ton of millstones.
25:46Come on, horse! Drive him!
25:48Yeah!
25:50Speed, man!
25:52Take that!
25:54Come on, take it!
26:02How was it, horse?
26:04Have any trouble getting this load across the river?
26:06No, a little bit. Been swimming with it.
26:12Can I get this?
26:14I got it.
26:16Well, I don't know about you,
26:18Mr. Edwards, but
26:20I always go by the rule you ought to lock the barn
26:22before the horse gets away.
26:24What are you talking about?
26:26Just a...
26:28certain party and your wife.
26:32You know what I think I'll do with you?
26:34When this mill is finished, I'll put a rope around your neck
26:36and hang you from one of the rafters just to celebrate.
26:38Mr. Edwards,
26:40you know I'm just protecting your interest.
26:42Listen, you filthy snake.
26:44I trust my wife, and I trust Ben Cartwright.
26:46He's my friend.
26:48And if you ever again put one of your
26:50rotten, suspicious thoughts in my mind,
26:52so help me heaven, I'll kill you.
26:54Your friend, Mr. Edwards?
26:56I wasn't talking about him.
26:58I was talking about his son, Adam.
27:04Watch your hands down here with that pole.
27:06All right.
27:08Let me get this out of there.
27:10Easy now.
27:14Easy, easy.
27:18Okay, let her slide down.
27:20Easy does it.
27:22Watch your hands, Pop.
27:24Let her slip.
27:28I ain't saying she did anything,
27:30but the point is...
27:32Look, just tell me if you saw anything or you didn't
27:34between her and Adam.
27:36Mr. Edwards, I don't want you getting excited.
27:38Tell me what you saw.
27:40Well, Adam was...
27:42Well, he was kind of...
27:44brushing up against her here and there.
27:46Did he touch her?
27:48No, not exactly.
27:52Well, it's his eyes, you know,
27:54when she wasn't looking at him.
27:56His eyes was...
27:58Well, you know what I mean.
28:00They're just kind of touching her all over.
28:04Of course, you've got to admit
28:06that Adam is a good-looking boy.
28:08With a little bit of luck,
28:10we'll have this mill running by tonight.
28:12Tom!
28:14Tom, they think they'll have the wheel going by tonight.
28:16Isn't that wonderful?
28:18Do you know what I think we should have?
28:20A party, and let's dance,
28:22and let's grind the first grain and have the neighbors in.
28:24Oh, wouldn't it be wonderful to have music again?
28:26I'll bet you'd like to dance,
28:28wouldn't you?
28:30Dusty, the music would be enough.
28:32I'll bet you'd like to dance with Adam.
28:34I beg your pardon.
28:36What's all this between you and Adam?
28:38Between me and Adam?
28:40Ever since the mill started,
28:42you've been tagging each other around.
28:44Tom, I don't understand you.
28:46You understand me. You're a woman, aren't you?
28:48You're young, you're lovely.
28:50Don't tell me you don't know what I'm talking about.
28:52Tom, on my word of honor,
28:54no such thought for Adam ever entered my mind.
28:56Then why are you so happy? Why have you been smiling
28:58ever since this mill started?
29:00Because of you.
29:02I want to start your life again, and my life.
29:04You haven't been tagging Adam around?
29:06No.
29:08Brushing against him, leaning against him?
29:10Laughing with him at me?
29:12No.
29:14You have! Both of you!
29:16You've been tagging each other around like a couple of simpering lovebirds!
29:18What's going on?
29:20I don't know.
29:22Looks like Ezekiel has done his work.
29:24Ezekiel, get me out of here!
29:26Excuse me, Miss Edwidge.
29:28You got him so upset, I better take him inside
29:30and put him down for a while.
29:32Ezekiel, do I have you to thank for this?
29:34No, ma'am.
29:36I didn't tattle on you, if that's what you mean.
29:38If you come near my wife again, Adam Cartwright,
29:40I'll kill you both!
29:50I'll give you my word.
29:52It's Ezekiel.
29:54He's warped and twisted Edward's mind.
29:56Pa, maybe we'd better stop working the mill.
29:58We can't just try to lug these stones in here.
30:00We'll finish this mill.
30:02Pa, a man as mixed up as that's liable to kill somebody.
30:06Keep working.
30:16Joyce!
30:18Joyce!
30:20Joyce!
30:22Joyce.
30:24Ben, please go away.
30:26Leave me alone.
30:28Joyce, come on now.
30:30Let it out.
30:32I've never been so humiliated, so ashamed.
30:34I don't know what to do.
30:40All right, now take it easy, Joe.
30:42You'll ruin the whole thing.
30:44Look, I told you it wouldn't fit, Adam.
30:46You made the shaft too short.
30:48Look, come on, now lift. Now lift, horse!
30:50Dang it, Adam, if I lift anymore,
30:52look, lift!
30:58Oh, come on, will you, Adam?
31:02Let's call it quits.
31:04Quits?
31:06Yeah, quits. We did enough work today for ten men.
31:08Come on, Joe, give me a few more minutes.
31:10I'm hungry, Adam.
31:12Adam, you give me one reason
31:14why I ought to break my back.
31:16Because I want to see it work.
31:18I want to see this mill grind wheat.
31:20I want to see this mill that we built.
31:22You do?
31:24I do.
31:26He does?
31:28He does.
31:30Why don't you say so, brother?
31:32Come on, let's get to work.
31:34All right, all together now.
31:36All right, let's go.
31:38One, two, heave!
31:40All right, in she goes!
31:44Hey, get the other side over there.
31:46Hey, wait till I get this board up.
31:48Let's go!
31:50One, two, heave!
31:52Heave!
31:54Hey!
31:56Hey, way to go, brother!
31:58Hey, look, it moves!
32:00Boss, get up to the diversion gate.
32:02When I give you the signal, let the water in the flume.
32:04Right.
32:06Hey, Adam, don't you think we ought to wait for Pa?
32:08Pa said to get it done, and that's what we got to do.
32:10Now get up there
32:12and let up that sluice gate when I tell you.
32:14Aye, aye, sir.
32:26All right, horse, let her go!
32:40Hey, it's filling up the flume, Adam.
32:44You all set?
32:46Let her go.
32:54Here she comes!
33:00Hey!
33:02Hey, boys, it's working!
33:04It's working!
33:06What?
33:08Oh, millstone!
33:10Oh, grinder wheat!
33:12And all wheat, make our bread!
33:14And all bread,
33:16make us as bread as our brother Adam!
33:18Hey, we're in!
33:20Way to go!
33:22Get it!
33:28Tom?
33:32Hey, Adam!
33:34Hey, maybe we'd better get up there.
33:36No.
33:38Come on in, whoever you are!
33:43Ha, ha, ha!
33:46Well, Cartwright,
33:48what do you want?
33:54The one thing I don't want
33:56is people shooting at me without a reason.
33:58I got a reason, the best reason in the world.
34:00My wife. Where is she?
34:02That's right, where is she?
34:04Miss Edward here's been worried about her.
34:06It ain't good for him to worry.
34:08How should I know where his wife is?
34:10You ought to know where she is.
34:12She's with your father, ain't she?
34:14He run off after her.
34:16Didn't think I knew, did you?
34:18I know.
34:20Ezekiel told me.
34:22I know all about your father, too, from a long way back.
34:24It's not the first time he betrayed me.
34:26He shot me in the spine.
34:28My father didn't shoot you, and you know it.
34:30I don't know any such thing.
34:32I know it was you, Cartwright, that's caused all my trouble.
34:34Mr. Edwards, you're wrong.
34:36Real wrong.
34:38But I didn't come here to argue with you.
34:40I just come to tell you that your mill is finished.
34:42We got it going.
34:44You think the mill solves everything, don't you?
34:46You know what I'm going to do with your mill?
34:48I'm going to destroy it. I'm going to burn it to the ground.
34:50Does Ben Cotter think he can buy my wife with a mill?
34:54You mock my words.
34:56Before I let him steal my wife,
34:58I'll kill him and hurt you!
35:02Ezekiel,
35:04if you're really his friend,
35:06you've got some wild ideas out of his head.
35:08I am his friend, Mr. Cartwright.
35:10But what's right is right.
35:12A man has a simple duty
35:14to protect his home.
35:24Ben,
35:26I'll always remember this time
35:28we've had together today.
35:30It was as though we had escaped to another world.
35:36It's been that way for me, too.
35:42Ben, look!
35:44The wheel is turning!
35:46Oh! Oh, isn't it beautiful?
35:48It certainly is.
35:52Joyce,
35:54I just can't let you go back.
35:56Ben, please, I...
35:58At least spend the night with us at the Ponderosa.
36:02Don't go back to that house, not right now.
36:04I'm not afraid.
36:06Tom and Ezekiel will be so drunk,
36:08they won't even hear me come in.
36:10Besides, with the mill and all,
36:12perhaps it will be different again.
36:16I've got to give him that chance.
36:20Well,
36:22just to be sure everything's all right,
36:24I'll...
36:26I'll ride by first thing in the morning.
36:28Ben,
36:30thank you
36:32for everything.
36:56Pa, we've been waiting for you.
36:58Oh? Why?
37:00I was a little worried about you.
37:02That's mighty thoughtful of you, Adam,
37:04but I have a feeling I'm old enough to take care of myself.
37:06I ran into some trouble over at the Edwards' place.
37:08What sort of trouble?
37:10Tom took a shot at me.
37:12No, I can't believe that.
37:14Neither could I.
37:16I went up to the ranch to tell him to finish with the mill,
37:18and he and that hired hand of his were glassy-eyed drunk.
37:20What started it? What brought it on?
37:22I don't know. Tom had some wild idea about you and Joyce
37:24being off someplace together, and he was making threats
37:26about killing you if you didn't stay away from her.
37:30Where are you going?
37:32I'm going right back to that house as fast as I can make it.
37:34That man touches Joyce.
37:36Pa? What?
37:42Want me to go with you?
37:44No. You stay here. I'll handle this alone.
37:46Pa,
37:48Tom's suspicion about you and Joyce, it isn't true, is it?
37:50Suppose it were, Adam.
37:52How would you feel about it?
37:56I'd say that if there ever was a chance,
37:58she couldn't do any better.
38:00I'd be happy for both of you.
38:04Thank you for that, Adam.
38:24That does it, Mr. Edwards.
38:28It's my house now.
38:32Your house.
38:34Your money.
38:36Your strength
38:38that packs me upstairs and puts me to bed.
38:42This is my wife, Ezekiel. You hear that?
38:44She's my wife!
38:46That's right.
38:48Your wife.
38:50You owe me quite a bit, Mr. Edwards.
38:54I've got a mill.
38:56I make flour.
38:58I don't make money.
39:00Ain't you forgetting something? I won that mill.
39:04I'll pay you some way.
39:06I'll pay you.
39:08Now that you mention it,
39:10there is a way, an easy way.
39:12You like to gamble, don't you?
39:16What are you diving at?
39:18I just want to make one more bet with you,
39:20just one cut of the cards.
39:22If I lose,
39:24you don't owe me anything, Mr. Edwards.
39:26Not a thing.
39:28You get the house back, and all the money you owe me.
39:32If I lose,
39:34what do I still own
39:36you don't already have?
39:42Well, just one cut of the cards can prevent that, Mr. Edwards.
39:44A gambler like you ought to jump at the chance.
39:48Somebody ought to kill you.
39:50Somebody ought to stalk you.
39:54Well, maybe somebody will.
39:58But that ain't gonna be you, is it, Mr. Edwards?
40:24Looks like my king beat your nine.
40:30Ezekiel,
40:32would you mind bringing Mr. Edwards up to our room now?
40:34I don't have to do that no more, Miss Edwards.
40:38That's my room now.
40:40That's where I'm gonna sleep.
40:44Even drunk as you are, you know that's not true.
40:48Isn't it?
40:50You ask your husband.
40:52What does he mean?
40:54Miss Edwards, there's some things going on here
40:56I think you ought to know about.
40:58Tom, what is he saying?
41:00He won the bet.
41:02What bet?
41:04What do you mean?
41:06Well, you're just as drunk as he is.
41:08You don't even know what you're saying.
41:12No, he's right, Miss Edwards.
41:16I don't know what he's talking about.
41:18No, he's right, Miss Edwards.
41:22I won the bet.
41:24Tom, tell him to get away from me. Help me!
41:26I can't help you, Joyce. I can't help you.
41:30You might as well get used to the idea, Miss Edwards.
41:32From now on,
41:34there ain't gonna be nobody but...
41:36Get away from me!
41:38You touch me and I'll kill you!
41:40I don't know how I'll do it, but I'll kill you!
41:48Ha ha ha!
41:52Well, she'll get over that
41:54as soon as she calms down a bit.
41:56Will she, Ezekiel?
41:58Are you sure?
42:00Yeah, I'm sure. Why shouldn't I be?
42:02You heard her.
42:04She said she'd kill you first.
42:08Maybe someone's gonna stop you after all.
42:12Ha ha ha!
42:18Ha ha ha!
42:28Hello, Mr. Cartwright?
42:30You should knock before you come into my home.
42:32Get out of here.
42:34No, Mr. Cartwright.
42:36Everything here belongs to me now.
42:38You see, I've taken Mr. Edwards' place.
42:40Even this chair belongs to me.
42:42Come on, Joyce.
42:48Now, stay right where you are, Mr. Cartwright.
42:50I wouldn't wanna have to hurt you.
42:52I'll take you where you're going and I won't hurt you.
42:54You'll get rid of me,
42:56you'll get rid of me.
42:58I'll get rid of you.
43:00I'll get you out of here.
43:02I'll get you out of here, Mr. Cartwright.
43:06You're out of here.
43:08I'm not out of here, Mr. Cartwright.
43:10I wouldn't want to have to hurt you.
43:13Now, you, lay your pistol belt on that table.
43:37Why are you sitting in that wheelchair?
43:40You're not crippled.
43:41That's right, I'm not.
43:44I just want to get the feel of it.
43:47I want to know how Mr. Edwards felt when he sat in it.
43:51I want to know how Mr. Edwards felt about everything.
44:02Come on, Joyce. Let's get out of here.
44:04No!
44:05Now, you can't, Mr. Cartwright.
44:07She belongs to me, too. Don't you understand?
44:09Look, I have it all here.
44:12I kept track of every bet I made with Mr. Edwards.
44:14He gambled away everything.
44:16And tonight, he gambled away his wife.
44:24Well, if you won everything from him,
44:28why did you kill him?
44:29Well, he tried to go back on a bet.
44:32You know a man can't do that.
44:35Ezekiel.
44:37You see...
44:40you're very tired.
44:43Why don't you rest, and we can talk about it?
44:47Go on, Joyce.
44:49No, no.
44:51No, where's she going?
44:53Just outside.
44:55No, no, she can't.
44:57Now, Mr. Edwards told you that if you tried to steal his wife,
45:00he'd kill you.
45:03I'm the same as Mr. Edwards now,
45:05so if you try to take her,
45:07I'm going to have to kill you.
45:09Oh!
45:11Oh!
45:13Get up!
45:33Oh!
45:49Oh!
45:58Oh!
46:00Bill!
46:02Oh!
46:33Joyce, this is, uh...
46:35this is what you want to do.
46:38I've had a lot of time to think this past week,
46:42and, uh, well, I have friends in Denver.
46:45I'd stay with them, and then I'll move on east.
46:49All right.
46:51You go, and after a few weeks or months,
46:55well, then you can decide what you want to do.
47:00Now, whatever you do,
47:02don't sell the mill.
47:04You use it.
47:06Now, Joyce,
47:08when you come back...
47:10Ben,
47:12I love you,
47:16but I could never come back.
47:22I need you.
47:24Remember you told me once,
47:26that when Little Joe's mother died,
47:28you had to get away, had to meet new people?
47:31Well, think of it that way.
47:41Um...
47:43I'll drive you into Virginia City.
47:45I'd rather we say goodbye here.
47:47It isn't easy for me, either.
47:49It isn't easy for me, either.
