00:00Often, when weather disturbances occur, especially when they happen in succession, one of the
00:06hardest hit are those who till the soil to ensure we all have food to eat.
00:11Thus, the Department of Agriculture made the assurance that affected farmers will receive
00:15the necessary assistance to help them continue with their trade and help the country achieve
00:21food security.
00:22PTV's Ryan Leziguez tells us more.
00:27The Department of Agriculture or DA assured immediate assistance for farmers affected
00:32by the series of typhoons that hit the country.
00:34According to the latest data from the DA, the damage left by typhoons Christine and
00:39Marseille has reached over P10 billion.
00:42Of this amount, nearly 60 percent or approximately P6 billion is from rice crops.
00:47The commodity banner programs of the Department of Agriculture have buffer seeds in every
00:55region.
00:56So that is the main thing we are mobilizing so that we could provide immediate support.
01:01But as to when it is cleared and they would really assess the extent of the damage, we
01:08are also accepting proposals for rehabilitations that we are sending under the Quick Response Fund.
01:15It is expected that the agricultural damage will increase, especially as Typhoon Nica has
01:19just passed.
01:21Because of this, there is a high possibility that rice production will decrease.
01:25Meanwhile, the procession of typhoons within the Philippine area of responsibility or power
01:30is not new.
01:31At the Quezon City Journalist Incorporated Forum, Annalisa Solis, Chief of Climate Monitoring
01:36and Prediction at PAGASA said this also happened in 1951 when up to seven typhoons ravaged
01:43the country while six typhoons entered in the same month in 1948.
01:48Solis emphasized the nation is experiencing a La Niña-like condition where the probability
01:54of rainfall from typhoons increases.
01:57Our ITC set is very active because usually this is the breeding places of tropical cyclone.
02:04So since the ITC set is very active, every low pressure system of the ITC set is developed
02:11into tropical cyclone.
02:13Since November, three consecutive typhoons have already entered the port, Marcy, Nica
02:18and Ofel.
02:19PAGASA reminds the public to remain alert as two to three more typhoons are expected
02:24to hit the country before the end of the year.
02:28From PTV, Ryan Lisigues, Balitang Pambansa.
