00:00Some officials of the Department of Agriculture visited their market to see the price of rice there.
00:10How much is that?
00:12Bernadette Reyes has a report on the spot.
00:15Bernadette?
00:19Good news to our viewers.
00:21Since today, more retailers are selling rice at the price of P42 per kilo.
00:28This was followed by an agreement between the Department of Agriculture and the market associations in Metro Manila
00:35that will limit their income to P3 to P5 per kilo for each kilo of regular and well-milled rice.
00:44According to the DA, in some families like Murphy Market in Cubao and Mega Q Mart here in Quezon City,
00:52almost all stores are selling P42 to P45 per kilo of rice.
00:58But most of the time, the retailers are saying that their income is too low because the rice harvest is still high.
01:04Some days, they are losing money because they have other expenses, such as paying for the place and plastic.
01:10That's why the DA is recommending to the suppliers that they can sell rice to the retailers at P37 to P38 per kilo.
01:21Let's listen to the part of our interviewees.
01:24To be honest, we don't see much. We only see a little bit of rice.
01:32For us, when the price is low, we only sell a little.
01:36This is the only place where we can prevent the price to go up.
01:38We have a place where the price is low even if there's only a little rice.
01:42It's better for us. People can see it.
01:44We are talking to some suppliers that we can sell rice at P37 to P38.
01:51They can sell rice at P31 to P43 if the margin is P3 to P5.
02:01Connie, here in Kamuning Market, almost all retailers are selling regular and well-mealed rice at P42 to P45 per kilo.
02:13Compared to the special rice, there are more broken grains.
02:18This is sold at P42 to P45 per kilo, but it's white and there's no smell.
02:25Yes, Bernadette, is there a penalty for those who don't comply with the P3 to P5 per kilo limit on rice grains?
02:31Connie, according to the Department of Agriculture, it will be part of their enforcement and inspectorate division
02:46to see if there are those who violate the law and they can be arrested or sent a notice of violation.
02:55If they cannot give a sufficient reason as to why the P3 to P5 per kilo limit is being added to the price of rice,
03:05they can be prosecuted for profiteering.
03:09Thank you very much, Bernadette Reyes.
