00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're looking at features we hope to see in the next God
00:12of War, from story elements to gameplay mechanics.
00:17Since we're talking about the future, a spoiler warning for all previous games is
00:21in effect.
00:30But before we dive into things, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe

00:39Kratos at peace.
00:51The Norse duology, especially the Valhalla DLC, brought Kratos to a place of peace within
00:57himself, forgiving the terrible things he had done in his past life.
01:01So it should go without saying that bringing back the violent hatred that occupied the
01:06Greek games would be a mistake.
01:15Whatever the conflict may be in the next installment, we hope Kratos is trying to prevent it.
01:20Not just in a self-growth type of way like in Ragnarok, but because he's grown into
01:25that God loved by the common folk and genuinely cares for their well-being.
01:30Sure he can still let that anger out when it's time to deal with an unreasonable enemy,
01:35but he shouldn't be thrown into a scenario that takes his development backwards.
01:52Adult Atreus.
02:03Both Norse games showed Atreus growing used to the abilities that came from his godhood.
02:08We've already seen the stumble of inexperienced youth, which led to some of the lesser aspects
02:14of Ragnarok when he was playable.
02:17Looking at you, Ironwood.
02:24Whenever the next game takes place, we'd really like for Atreus to be an older, more fully
02:29formed god.
02:30Barring some type of spinoff that sees him tracking down remaining giants, a persistent
02:35rumor, we'd really like for him to be more confident not only in his powers, but in his
02:40position.
02:41It would be nice if he and Kratos could act as equals in combating whatever threat comes
02:45their way.
02:55Resolution with Sindri.
03:07There were a few threads left dangling after Ragnarok and Valhalla, but one of the more
03:12personal ones was Kratos and Atreus' damaged relationship with Sindri.
03:17With his brother Brokk having been killed by Odin, Sindri lashed out and blamed them
03:22for his death, particularly Atreus.
03:35While Ragnarok gave us resolution of Freya's anger over Baldur's death in the previous
03:39game, we never got the same with Sindri.
03:43In fact, the writers even put in extra scenes to show that the once lighthearted blacksmith's
03:47anger had not dissolved.
03:50While sometimes in life that's just how things go and relationships are never mended,
03:54we really hope that isn't the case here.
04:04Multiple Pantheons.
04:14The Norse games laid the groundwork for the series to go in several directions in terms
04:19of which Pantheons to adapt next.
04:22Any of them would undeniably be cool, and many fans are guessing Egypt.
04:26However, Sony Santa Monica could, and arguably should, surprise us.
04:32Instead of just moving on to the next Pantheon, why not tackle several?
04:45The games have clearly shown they're all connected.
04:48Maybe there's a war between them that Kratos and Atreus must try to prevent.
04:52Maybe there's a power vacuum with what happened to the Greek and Norse worlds.
04:56Regardless, it would be an interesting way for the series to grow grander.
05:00You could argue that this would make them each less defined, but if planned across several
05:05games with different gods and areas introduced within them, we know the team could do them
05:11justice.
05:17A Brand New Weapon
05:28When Kratos transitioned into the Norse world, its combat was, initially, defined by the
05:33Leviathan Axe.
05:35The Blades of Chaos from the Greek era returned at the Midway Point, and the drop-near-spear
05:40was introduced similarly in Ragnarok.
05:53When it comes time for him to enter a new location, we think its combat should progress
05:57in the same way.
05:59Give him a new weapon linked to whatever area the next game is set in.
06:03And if it does happen to focus on more than one Pantheon, having him earn another weapon
06:08from each place would be a great way to evolve combat as players progress.
06:21Monstrous Enemies
06:32This isn't to say that Daddy Kratos didn't fight large enemies.
06:36There were trolls, dragons, and Garm the Hellhound.
06:40But when compared to some of the bosses in the Greek era, these types of fights were
06:44far smaller in scale.
06:46They still mostly kept the conflict on the ground, or within the same space that they
06:51started in.
07:01Some of the most impressive boss fights in the older games acted as giant set pieces.
07:07Like Kronos in God of War III, the Hecatonchires in Ascension, or even the Hydra, the opening
07:13fight of the first game way back in 2005.
07:16The boss fights of the Norse games are still stellar, but we hope to see a bit of the epicness
07:21of the older games come back.
07:31Replayable Boss Fights
07:40Speaking of boss fights, we think we can speak for all fans when we say that they're highlights
07:46across the God of War series.
07:48So wouldn't it be great if you could go back and experience them without the need
07:52of replaying the entire story?
07:54There are plenty of action-adventure games that give players this option.
07:58Whether it be through a boss rush mode, or just allowing them to test themselves by increasing
08:03the difficulty.
08:15You could even lock certain rewards behind them like in-game items or cosmetics, or behind
08:20the scenes features like artwork.
08:22Regardless, the boss fights in God of War are some of gaming's best, and it would
08:26be great for us to fine-tune our skills by revisiting them.
08:42Refined Customization
08:52Of the few complaints about the newer God of War games, the implementation of RPG elements
08:58was one of the more frequent.
09:00It was like a midway point between the action of the older entries and the grander style
09:05of actual RPGs.
09:07But most of the time, if you found armor or enchantments that you liked, it was worth
09:11it to keep it rather than change things up.
09:20While skill trees for weapons and abilities were fine, this element could use a bit more
09:24fine-tuning in the next entry.
09:27The UI also walked a not-so-fine line of looking like every other action RPG, with multiple
09:33tabs to flip through and being awkward to navigate.
09:43More Focus on Exploration
09:54While not open world, the Norse entries featured huge areas to gather resources and hear new
10:00stories.
10:01In the 2018 game, the Lake of Nine would gradually have more of it revealed as you completed
10:05the story.
10:07But since many of the locations around the lake looked so similar, you'd spend a lot
10:12of time rowing around.
10:21Ragnarok was a bit better about this, since several realms became huge explorable spaces
10:27in their own right.
10:29But backtracking once you gained access to new content could still be a slow process.
10:35We hope the next game fixes this, and we have a few ideas how.
10:39Give us a better fast travel system that eliminates some of the needless backtracking,
10:43and give Kratos some quicker movement mechanics if necessary.
10:47Maybe even give him his jump back.
10:49Also, giving him items and weapons upon completing sections, like in the old games, could allow
10:54for more frequent and enjoyable exploration of previous areas.
11:08Explore the Higher Power
11:09We'll end on another story element we hope to see addressed in Kratos' future adventures.
11:24There is clearly something or someone in a higher position of power than the gods.
11:30We've seen this with Athena's higher plane of being in God of War 3, and we've seen
11:36it with Odin's obsession over the mysterious mask in God of War Ragnarok.
11:48But like him, we've never gotten any answers.
11:51At least not yet.
11:53Whether these two elements are connected is unclear, but they are elements we wonder about
11:57nonetheless.
11:58How are the different pantheons connected?
12:01What exactly happens to the gods when they die?
12:04Who's in charge here?
12:06There are theories that delve into these mysteries, but it would be great to get something concrete
12:11from the actual source.
