00:00Some products claim to be game-changers, promising to revolutionise daily life.
00:05FlexTape wants you to believe it's one of them. But is it really?
00:08The truth about FlexTape is a bit more grounded.
00:11Curious to know the real story? Keep watching.
00:14In February 2017, FlexTape had a shining moment on the NASCAR track.
00:19Driver Garrett Smithley, in the number zero Chevy Camaro for JD Motorsports,
00:23suffered a crash during the Daytona race, leaving his car in desperate need of a quick fix.
00:28Fortunately, the team had plenty of FlexTape ready.
00:31After a rapid patch-up, Smithley returned to the race and managed to finish in eighth place.
00:36It's a story that seems almost tailor-made for the brand's marketing.
00:40If true, it certainly makes a case for FlexTape's reliability.
00:43But should this miracle fix be allowed on the racetrack?
00:46We're not so sure. It almost feels like an unfair advantage.
00:49I don't think we would have finished the race without the FlexTape,
00:52and it ultimately helped us get a top ten finish.
00:55People can't help but ask, if FlexTape can seal a high-pressure leak or keep a robo to float,
01:00could it actually stop a bullet?
01:02The answer is a solid no.
01:04But that hasn't stopped a few daring folks from testing it out.
01:07While Phil Swift has never claimed FlexTape is bulletproof,
01:10the wild notion has somehow sparked the imaginations of a few adventurous fans who still hope it might work.
01:16Several YouTubers have eagerly put FlexTape's supposed toughness to the test.
01:20For instance, the Channel Demolition Ranch created a makeshift bulletproof vest using cardboard layered with FlexTape.
01:27Initially, a single layer couldn't stop a bullet from a .22 caliber pistol, so they kept adding more.
01:33Even 60 layers didn't hold up, but after stacking 80 layers, the tape finally managed to block a bullet.
01:39So, while FlexTape might not save you in a gunfight,
01:42if you're ever in one at the FlexTape factory, you might stand a chance.
01:47FlexTape spokesperson Phil Swift has been in marketing and direct sales since the 1980s,
01:52bringing decades of experience to the product.
01:54His brother Alan, who also works on the FlexSeal and FlexTape line, has nearly 30 years in business administration.
02:02Together, they created Swift Response LLC,
02:05focusing on simple, high-performance solutions for everyday household issues,
02:10like those moments when your boat, say, takes a cannonball hit.
02:14Holy s***!
02:15FlexTape has inspired countless inventive uses online, far beyond patching up vehicles.
02:20Social media videos show people using it for everything from crafting makeshift exfoliators to binding a bodybuilder.
02:27Some have even attempted to create nearly indestructible walls with layers of FlexTape,
02:32ideal, perhaps, if you're out of traditional building materials like wood, brick or steel.
02:37Thankfully, no one's tried anything truly hazardous with it, eating it aside,
02:41which Phil Swift wouldn't recommend.
02:43FlexTape's versatility seems boundless, proving that a little creativity and strong adhesive go a long way.
02:49Some people think they can eat the FlexSeal family of products.
02:53You can't. Don't eat them.
02:55From real-life tests, FlexTape might get you by in a pinch,
02:58but relying on a patched-up boat for extended open-water trips isn't wise.
03:02It's a temporary solution, not a long-term one.
03:05When FlexTape ads first aired, they came with bold claims,
03:09making the product seem almost miraculous.
03:12If the hype were true, FlexTape would be a game-changer.
03:15However, since its release, curious YouTubers, consumer watchdogs and news outlets
03:20have taken it upon themselves to test these big promises.
03:24The results? FlexTape might not quite live up to its lofty reputation after all.
03:28That's not to say FlexTape doesn't work.
03:31A Texas fox affiliate used it to fix a leaky pipe,
03:34and even sealed a leak underwater, with results matching the commercials.
03:38Inside Edition, however, had mixed results with the famous sawed-in-half boat stunt.
03:43The boat leaked, but still floated well enough for the segment.
03:47Meanwhile, some YouTubers weren't so lucky.
03:50Their split boats sank.
03:52FlexSeal's response? They said to Inside Edition,
03:55When the product doesn't perform as expected,
03:57it's typically because the product was not applied correctly.
04:00In other words, feel free to trust FlexTape for patching up your boat in shark-infested waters.
04:06But if it fails, FlexSeal won't be held responsible.
