00:00The big question now this morning as we digest Donald Trump's victory is what swung it for him
00:08and what lost it for Kamala Harris. And really we have to look at the economy, at the state of the
00:15US economy, at the state of prices for groceries, for fuel, for everything over the last four years.
00:23One figure really jumps out from the exit polls. 45% of Americans of voters said they felt worse
00:31off today than they did four years ago. No incumbent party holding the White House has ever
00:38managed to hold on to power with numbers like that. Kamala Harris obviously was a last minute
00:45replacement for Joe Biden but really this is also a referendum on four years of the Biden
00:51administration and of course Harris was a big part of that. As well as the impact of high prices
00:56there were a couple of other factors that were pretty important. One of course was immigration
01:01which Trump made the hallmark of his campaign. There's also a factor that we can't overlook and
01:07that's sexism. That Trump's campaign was replete with pretty misogynistic language really aimed at
01:13male voters and in the breakdown of the exit polls we see that men broke pretty decisively
01:19for Trump, 54% to 44% for Harris and there were some interesting sort of breakdowns within that
01:26when you look at the numbers of black and hispanic men for instance who backed Trump in much bigger
01:32numbers than you saw backing him in previous elections. So that's really going to be something
01:38that's digested for a while to come.
