00:00We are now joined by a few lawmakers to discuss the programs for cooperatives in the country
00:06that help in food security and sustainable agriculture.
00:09Jessie and Jansa from PTV Cebu for Detailia.
00:16These are the big and healthy plantations of lettuce and spring onions in Barangay Sudlon Uno in Cebu City.
00:24These are just a few of the plantations that are directly supplied to one of the largest food chains in the country
00:31that has its own group of companies of well-known restaurants.
00:35This is a big help for farmers like Catalino.
00:39That's why we are able to buy assets.
00:42Like what, sir?
00:44We already have a house.
00:46We were able to buy, even if it's ugly, a car.
00:51We already have a motorcycle.
00:54We are able to achieve what we want.
00:56And you are also able to go to school.
00:58Yes, we are also able to go to school.
01:00And we are not hungry anymore.
01:03Catalino is one of the members of the LAMAC Multipurpose Cooperative.
01:08He learned not only how to earn money as a farmer,
01:12but also how to take care of other aspects of life,
01:15such as farming education and financial literacy.
01:20They are a part of our movement,
01:23especially our farmers,
01:25because they believe that they are not alone.
01:30In their fields, they can be helped.
01:34Not only by the government, but there are some other private entities.
01:38Through the cooperative, we can be sure that there is really an economic boom
01:46for the agriculture in the country.
01:48I want to emphasize the importance of the partnership with Jollibee Group Foundation.
01:54We cannot do all of this without our local partners,
01:58because they are the ones who understand the local context of our farmers.
02:03From 2013 up to present, I think the partnership with LAMAC and Jollibee Group Foundation
02:09has evolved tremendously.
02:13Not only by the number of farmers who have been helped,
02:16but also by the better quality of life of the farmers we help.
02:23Just recently, Senator Aimee Marcos called for programs
02:28that will be more helpful to the cooperatives in the country.
02:32We're in the throes of trying to amend our co-op code
02:36so that it's more responsive and more helpful to our co-ops.
02:41There are outstanding co-ops here in Region 7 in Cebu,
02:47and we need to help them become more resilient and more flexible in times of crisis.
02:55So we have to make certain that they have the freedom and the flexibility
03:00to truly assist their members.
03:03At present, there are more than 100,000 members
03:06of the LAMAC Multipurpose Co-operative in Cebu and Mindanao.
03:11It will help in food security and sustainable agriculture.
03:17From PTV Cebu, Jesse Atienza for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
