00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 unscripted Jim
00:11Carrey moments that were left in the movie.
00:16For this list, we're looking at times in films when our favorite rubber-faced comedian made
00:20us laugh relying only on his uncanny improvisation abilities.
00:25What's your favorite Jim Carrey moment?
00:27Leave some smokin' comments below!
00:31Number 20 Uncovered Sneeze – Ace Ventura When Nature Calls
00:35Unsurprisingly, you can expect to get a lot of great improvised Jim Carrey bits from his
00:40more unrestrained characters, and there are few of his as unhinged as Ace Ventura.
00:51He's introduced to the African Wachati tribe, and his cultural ignorance is evident from
00:56the outset.
00:57Soon enough, his guide Greenwall explains that the tribe was untouched by disease until
01:02they met colonists, at which point Ace does about the worst thing he could do.
01:17Reportedly Carrey came up with the action himself, though the tribesmen he sneezes on
01:21probably knew what was going to happen.
01:24Judging by his perfect reaction, we like to think that he didn't.
01:28Number 19 Fall from Above – Fun with Dick and Jane
01:33Fun with Dick and Jane is a remake that's gone mostly forgotten among the Carrey community,
01:38and probably for good reason.
01:40But if there's evidence that Carrey can stay in the moment when a bit goes wrong, it's
01:44this one.
02:00During the climactic heist sequence of sorts, Dick manages to get an employee to leave the
02:05building so he can use her computer to print a vital document.
02:09However, another employee walks into her office, and Dick hides by hanging from the ceiling.
02:21Upon dropping down, Carrey accidentally missed the desk and fell to the floor.
02:27Rather than break character, however, Carrey completed the scene by grabbing the printout,
02:32proving his dedication to any project he's in.
02:35Number 18 Big Gulps – Dumb and Dumber
02:39Sometimes all you need is to be in the right place at the right time for memorable comedy
02:44to sprout up.
02:45In the first Dumb and Dumber movie, Harry and Lloyd pull off the road to stop by a convenience
02:50store, and on the way out, Lloyd greets a couple of guys drinking big gulps in the parking
02:54lot.
03:02Not only did Jim Carrey improvise the brief one-sided exchange, but the gulpers weren't
03:06even paid extras – they just happened to be two bystanders in the area watching the
03:10film shoot.
03:12Probably sensing the potential for improvisational gold, director Peter Farrelly decided to put
03:17them in a shot before Carrey predictably proved him right.
03:25Number 17 Trying to Have Fun – Kick Ass 2
03:29While Jim Carrey ultimately came to denounce Kick Ass 2 over the level of extreme violence
03:34displayed, that doesn't mean he didn't put in a memorable performance.
03:38As Colonel Stars and Stripes, Carrey's character leads a newfound coalition of superheroes
03:43known as Justice Forever, and just before their first mission, he gives them some sound
03:48advice.
03:57It may seem like a small moment, but the line turned out to be a recurring clip in the marketing
04:02campaign, selling Carrey's inclusion in the film.
04:05As an added bonus, Carrey improvised another line later in the scene, taunting a criminal
04:10while using his dog to interrogate him.
04:18Number 16 Dinner With Me – How The Grinch Stole Christmas
04:23Much like Ace Ventura and Lloyd Christmas, we're gonna be seeing a lot of The Grinch
04:27on this list.
04:37Seeing as The Grinch spends a good deal of the movie speaking to himself, not to mention
04:42his trusty dog Max, it's only sensible that some of the best lines came from Carrey riffing
04:47on the spot.
04:48When The Grinch tries to come up with excuses for not returning to Whoville, he lists a
04:52lot of hilarious schedule items.
04:55But arguably the best one, the Dinner With Me line, Carrey came up with on his own.
05:06Each of these lines is like a mini-joke wrapped in a bigger one, exemplifying how few words
05:11Carrey needs to be funny.
05:14Number 15 Asking Sons For A Kiss – Me, Myself and Irene
05:23The whole premise of Me, Myself and Irene is a man whose second personality makes him
05:27very unpredictable.
05:29Say what you will about the inherent humor in that, but Jim Carrey's managed to be
05:33unpredictable for his entire career, and we love him for it.
05:37One such example is when his character Charlie from this 2000 black comedy sets out on his
05:42day and says goodbye to his adoptive sons.
05:52While kisses goodbye might seem normal, Carrey reportedly ad-libbed this moment on the spot,
05:57making it even funnier.
05:59What's more, the three actors, including a young Anthony Anderson, go through with
06:04it without breaking character.
06:06Now that's four great improvisers for the price of one.
06:09Number 14 Milo Scenes – The Mask Between Eisenhower from Kick-Ass 2, Max from
06:16The Grinch and Milo from The Mask, Jim Carrey definitely knows how to work with dogs.
06:21In one scene from The Mask, Carrey's Stanley frantically tries to hide the money he stole
06:26with a frisbee.
06:28Only Milo has other ideas.
06:30Hey!
06:31Milo!
06:32No!
06:33No!
06:34No!
06:35No!
06:36No!
06:37Stop it!
06:38I'm coming!
06:39Okay!
06:40I'm coming!
06:41I'll be right there!
06:42Reportedly, Milo wasn't supposed to initiate a game of tug-of-war, so Carrey's frustrated
06:47reactions were conjured on the spot.
06:50But Milo, coincidentally also named Max in real life, clearly knew it would only add
06:56to the scene.
06:57Later, when Stanley's in jail for the aforementioned crime, he tries to get Milo to scurry up a
07:01wall and help him escape.
07:03When he initially can't, Carrey also reportedly ad-libbed some of his exasperated reactions.
07:09That's it!
07:10You can do it!
07:11Come on!
07:12Come on!
07:13Come on!
07:14Come on!
07:15Milo!
07:16Put some effort into it!
07:18Number 13 Landing on the Moon – Dumb and Dumber Sometimes all you need to be an effective
07:25comedic performer is to take in your environment and respond in earnest.
07:29Clearly, Jim Carrey is already keenly aware of that if this scene is any indication.
07:35After Harry and Lloyd finally make it to Aspen and find Mary, Lloyd goes to a bar thinking
07:40he has a date with her.
07:41When she obviously doesn't show, he grills the bartender for her address and sets off
07:46to confront her.
07:48Only he spots a curious newspaper article on the way out.
07:53No way!
07:54That's great!
07:55We landed on the moon!
08:01We don't know if that headline was framed beforehand or by the production crew but Carrey
08:05apparently saw it and came up with the perfect comedic beat to end the scene on.
08:11Number 12 Losing Lisp – The Cable Guy Chip Douglas from The Cable Guy is definitely
08:17one of Carrey's most underrated roles.
08:19And the fact that he has a lisp is really just the cherry on top of the sundae in completing
08:25a memorable character.
08:33During the climactic fight scene against Matthew Broderick Steven, Chip gets punched at one
08:37point and realizes his lisp is gone.
08:52Only this wasn't in the script as Carrey genuinely forgot to incorporate it.
08:56Instead of calling cut, he rolled with it, making for one of the best jokes in the movie.
09:08Honestly it's hard to believe that this wasn't a fully planned moment but such is
09:13the majesty of Jim Carrey's superb comedic wit.
09:16Number 11 Tablecloth Trick – How the Grinch Stole Christmas This one occurs almost immediately
09:23after the dinner with me line.
09:25While we could have incorporated this one into that entry, the moment is too good not
09:30to go fully in depth with it.
09:44When the Grinch starts to come around to the idea of making an appearance in Whoville,
09:47he starts to wonder what he's going to wear, prompting him to experiment with a tablecloth.
09:57While the script had everything on the table go flying immediately, Carrey accidentally
10:01performed the tablecloth trick perfectly.
10:04Making the joke even better, Carrey went back and had the Grinch knock over everything himself.
10:10This is absolute comedic gold and something you could try a hundred times and not get
10:15it as right as Carrey does on the fly.
10:18Number 10 Dr. Robotnik's Dance – Sonic the Hedgehog Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik was
10:25an odd casting choice to say the least but it resulted in a fun performance that allowed
10:29the actor to revisit his over-the-top roots.
10:32The comedian was given free reign to ad-lib on set and by the end of shooting, Carrey
10:36wasn't sure how much of the actual script made it into the movie.
10:44Carrey's most uproarious improvisation comes in the form of a dance sequence.
10:47While analyzing one of Sonic's quills, Robotnik cuts loose with choreography that only Carrey
10:52could come up with on the spot.
11:00It was reportedly Carrey's idea to include the song Where Evil Grows, remembering it
11:05from his childhood.
11:12Carrey's assistant Nicole also fed him a line when Agent Stone shows up with lattes.
11:27Number 9 On9 – Me, Myself and Irene Though the actors playing Carrey's sons were
11:34mostly able to cover up their surprise in the kissing scene, that wasn't always the
11:38case when it came to Carrey and his antics.
11:40On multiple occasions he caught his co-stars off guard.
11:43In another instance, Irene and Charlie's other personality Hank decide to ditch their
11:47vehicle.
11:48Ready to shove the car off a cliff, Hank tells Irene to push on the count of nine.
11:56Why not the count of ten?
11:58It doesn't really matter since Hank counts down in barely a second.
12:01Carrey came up with this line and you can tell from the bewildered look on Renee Zellweger's
12:05face that she was not prepared for it.
12:08Number 8 – The Cellist's Arm – Ace Ventura, Pet Detective
12:24Carrey was heavily involved in the production of Ace Ventura, contributing rewrites to the
12:28script and injecting numerous moments off the top of his head.
12:31Infiltrating a party, Ace does everything in his power not to blend in.
12:36As if his eccentric wardrobe and personality weren't enough to draw attention to himself
12:40already, Ace goes out of his way to pull on a cellist's arm.
12:44This causes the musician to hit a wrong note, but Ace just keeps walking without skipping
12:48a beat.
12:49Oh look honey, there's the hors d'oeuvres.
12:58Carrey threw in this random moment without preparing anyone, least of all the cellist.
13:02Even when given the most straightforward direction, Carrey can't resist sprinkling in some
13:06something extra.
13:16Number 7 – Hello Clarice – The Cable Guy
13:28If we had to single out the two most horrifying characters to come out of the 90s, they would
13:32undoubtedly be Hannibal Lecter and Jim Carrey's cable guy.
13:36Okay, maybe we're exaggerating when it comes to the latter, but Chip Douglas does
13:40borrow a page from Hannibal the Cannibal in this scene.
13:52At a medieval times restaurant – seriously, why aren't there more of those – Chip
13:56asks Matthew Broderick-Steven for his chicken skin.
13:59Draping his face in the skin, Chip imitates Hannibal's gruesome disguise from The Silence
14:03of the Lambs.
14:12You can tell that Carrey improvised this moment based on Broderick's reaction.
14:16As Carrey covers his face with poultry, Broderick is unable to maintain a straight face, visibly
14:22breaking on screen.
14:24Number 6 – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – Ace Ventura – When Nature Calls
14:28Once again, Carrey had the creative freedom to go wild as Ace Ventura.
14:33Colton Greenwall is completely unprepared when Ace decides to take a shortcut.
14:37Likewise, actor Ian McNeice wasn't expecting Carrey to suddenly burst out singing Chitty
14:41Chitty Bang Bang.
14:43Having forgotten his lines, Carrey ad-libbed with the theme from the Dick Van Dyke musical
14:47adventure.
14:55Way to make an already stressful situation even more unhinged.
14:58We're not sure what's more impressive.
15:01Carrey's manic improvisation skills or the fact that McNeice didn't break out laughing.
15:06Director Steve Oedekerke chose to keep the scene since Carrey and McNeice managed to
15:09stay in character throughout.
15:10As Carrey hits the song's final note, however, McNeice can be spotted cracking a smile as
15:15he covers his ears.
15:24Number 5 – Directing Max – How the Grinch Stole Christmas – Despite all the aforementioned
15:30Grinch goodness, arguably his most elaborate ad-lib took aim at the film's director, Ron
15:35Howard.
15:36Before heading off to Whoville, the Grinch attempts to get his dog Max into character
15:40as Rudolph.
15:47He does this by channeling Howard, even donning one of the director's signature baseball caps.
15:52What ensues is 100% Carrey poking fun at Howard's directing methods.
15:57Howard wasn't offended by Carrey's imitation of him.
16:00On the contrary, Howard found it so hysterical he couldn't leave it out of the picture.
16:14Of course, Howard had to cut some of Carrey's more adult-oriented ad-libs throughout the
16:18film to keep things PG.
16:20Are we the only ones who want to see an R-rated director's cut?
16:29Number 4 – Meeting Count Olaf – Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
16:34– This dark comedy has too many improvised moments to keep track of, but Carrey's introduction
16:39as Count Olaf is definitely a highlight.
16:51Although he acts as if the world is his stage, Olaf is ironically a horrible actor.
16:57So when Olaf asks Klaus Baudelaire to repeat the line he just said, it seems to be on-brand
17:03for the character.
17:05In reality, Carrey forgot his next line and decided to spin his mistake into comedic gold.
17:21A confused Klaus thus says his line again, prompting a more shocked reaction from Olaf.
17:27Between the performances and the editing, this unscripted moment plays out seamlessly.
17:31Carrey is a method actor, and even when drawing a blank, he can stay true to his role.
17:43Number 3 – That One's For Free – The Truman Show
17:46– Believe it or not, it was Carrey's performance as Ace Ventura that convinced director Peter
17:51Weir to cast him as Truman Burbank, one of his most dramatic roles.
17:55Weir also came to appreciate Carrey's improv talents, which can be seen in the finished
17:59film.
18:00When Truman talks to himself and the audience in the mirror, Carrey added an extra bit of
18:04whimsy to the moment.
18:09As his character pretends to be an outer space explorer, Carrey took a piece of soap and
18:13drew a helmet on the mirror.
18:15Apparently there was another take where Carrey sketched a dress, although the astronaut attire
18:19best illustrates Truman's desire to escape from Seahaven Island.
18:41Kind of ironic that Carrey would later play a man on the moon.
18:48Number 2 – Sorry, Wrong Pocket – The Mask
18:53– When Stanley Ipkiss first transforms into the cartoony mask, he has some fun at the
18:57expense of a local street gang by setting up a balloon animal booth.
19:09After making one gangster a giraffe, the mask reaches into his pocket and accidentally pulls
19:13out a soggy used balloon.
19:16Oh wait, we just realized that was not a balloon.
19:22There goes our childhood innocence.
19:24The moment is only made more hilarious when you consider that Carrey apparently came up
19:28with this bit.
19:29Talk about being a master of improv and prop comedy!

19:48Number 1 – The Most Annoying Sound in the World – Dumb and Dumber
20:04– It shouldn't come as a surprise that Carrey was entirely responsible for some of
20:08the funniest lines in this cult comedy classic.
20:10While the aforementioned entries are genius in their own right, Carrey's most notable
20:15contribution comes during an already obnoxious car ride.
20:19Stuck between Harry and Lloyd, hired goon Mental is on the verge of cracking.
20:23So naturally, Lloyd tries to ease tensions by making the most annoying sound in the world.
20:37This was all Carrey's doing, and it's easy to spot the look of uncertainty on Jeff
20:42Daniels' face leading up to it.
20:43Daniels also joins in making the sound, but not before cracking up.
20:48Do you agree with our picks?
